“If you don’t know what you’re living for, you haven’t yet lived.” – Rabbi Noah Weinberg. This message from Rabbi Weinberg is a very strong message for the world today. We as humans have come to a point where we will decide the future of this planet. We will decide the well-being of Humans, Animals, Plants and our own Natural Resources. Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises to be our biggest partner if implemented wisely.
Germany, Israel, Russia and USA today lead the race to dominate the world of AI. AI and robotics will have a big impact on the future of the work force, wealth creation and capitalism. There have been predictions from various sources that predict that 45 to 60 percent of jobs today will be automated out of existence well within 20 years. This could mean 80 percent for countries that are not developed. And no, we are not going back to farming. There is nothing left there as AI will dominate that area of work too. Let us not forget that America went from a society of farmers (84% in 1810), to only 2% farmers today). I have said this before and I repeat it again; this revolution cannot be compared to the Industrial Revolution, Industrial Revolution is a big leap but AI is the biggest leap mankind has or will ever witness if at all we are to survive this change.
Now think of countries that have no control over their population. These countries have no social security, no free medical assistance and sub-standard living conditions. In a world of full-fledged AI these countries will become a menace not only for themselves but for the whole world. Argentina, Brazil, China and India lead the race of such countries, where AI could cause one of the biggest human disasters the world has ever witnessed. Smaller countries such as Bangladesh, El Salvador, Ethiopia and Nepal might not even see any development in the future. In a time where the world has to survive on Universal Basic Income (UBI), countries with poverty will have a tough time. All these countries might not be capable of even having a Full UBI or a Full Basic Income, instead they might have to settle for Partial Basic Income (unconditional income transfer that is considered insufficient to meet a person’s basic needs) if they do not control their population on a high priority. Now this could lead to a sharp rise in Shadow Economy and unwanted, unethical portals such as the Dark Web might gain popularity.
Countries like Denmark, Germany, Israel, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Taiwan are well-equipped to manage this change as and when it occurs. The older generation of these countries has been much thoughtful, honest and intelligent. What’s now required is a plan for the next two hundred years or more with AI easing things for humans! Technology firms are developing driverless cars, workerless shops and smarter-than-human software. This is only the beginning. We will see a billion more developments in the next hundred years. Sergey Brin, the co-founder of Google, recently stated that he was “surprised” by the pace of AI developments.
Just to conclude there’s an important saying in the Bible: Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counsellors there is safety (Proverbs 11:14). AI and UBI will help us all enjoy a luxurious leisure if the machine-produced wealth is shared, or we would all end up miserably poor if the machine-owners successfully lobby against wealth redistribution. Today AI needs a global governance, a team that would dictate the implementation of AI and act as a monitoring body for the whole globe, of course with a fair representation from all continents.
