This decentralized ecosystem is set to help incentivize people to contribute data, technical resources, and effort:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"741b\" name=\"741b\">1st generation projects have been focussing on&nbsp;<strong>creating the data infrastructure<\/strong>&nbsp;to connect and integrate data, e.g.&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/www.iota.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iota.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">IOTA<\/a>,&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/iotchain.io\/\" href=\"https:\/\/iotchain.io\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">IoT Chain<\/a>, or&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/iotex.io\/\" href=\"https:\/\/iotex.io\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">IoTex<\/a>&nbsp;for data from connected IoT devices, or&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/www.streamr.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.streamr.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Streamr<\/a>&nbsp;for streaming data.<\/li>\n<li id=\"0f0b\" name=\"0f0b\">2nd generation projects have been working on&nbsp;<strong>creating data marketplaces<\/strong>, e.g.&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/oceanprotocol.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/oceanprotocol.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ocean Protocol<\/a>,&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/singularitynet.io\/\" href=\"https:\/\/singularitynet.io\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">SingularityNet<\/a>, or&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/fysical.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fysical.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Fysical<\/a>&nbsp;<strong>and crowd data annotation platforms<\/strong>, e.g.&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/gems.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/gems.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Gems<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/dbrain.io\/\" href=\"https:\/\/dbrain.io\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Dbrain<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li id=\"d2a0\" name=\"d2a0\">With solutions covering the first steps on this data value chain maturing, my friends&nbsp;<a data-href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/sherm8n\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/sherm8n\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Twitter profile for @sherm8n\">@sherm8n<\/a>&nbsp;and Rahul started to work on&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/www.ravenprotocol.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ravenprotocol.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Raven Protocol<\/a>, a first 3rd generation project that will close an important gap at the analyze stage:&nbsp;<strong>Compute resources for AI training<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<section name=\"3d8b\">\n<hr \/>\n<p id=\"7ab0\" name=\"7ab0\">A recent&nbsp;<a data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.openai.com\/ai-and-compute\/\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.openai.com\/ai-and-compute\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI report<\/a>&nbsp;showed that &ldquo;the amount of compute used in the largest AI training runs has been increasing exponentially with a 3.5 month-doubling time&rdquo;, this is a&nbsp;<strong>300.000x increase since 2012<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"9332\" name=\"9332\">\n<p><canvas height=\"55\" width=\"75\"><\/canvas><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*BD1e1FIfUNEB0iUq4D9aXw.png\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*BD1e1FIfUNEB0iUq4D9aXw.png\" \/><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p name=\"3181\" style=\"text-align: center;\">OpenAI Report: AI and&nbsp;Compute<\/p>\n<p id=\"3181\" name=\"3181\">The immediate consequences from this are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"c43b\" name=\"c43b\"><strong>Higher costs<\/strong>, as used compute is increasing faster than supply<\/li>\n<li id=\"5090\" name=\"5090\"><strong>Longer lead times for new solution<\/strong>, as model training takes longer<\/li>\n<li id=\"911c\" name=\"911c\"><strong>Increased market entry barriers<\/strong>&nbsp;based on access to funding &amp; resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"9dda\" name=\"9dda\">These consequences can proof&nbsp;<strong>dire for smaller firms and researchers<\/strong>, limiting their ability to create competitive models without significant funding. And even with funding, they might be blacklisted from resources if they&rsquo;re considered competition by the providers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"4d90\" name=\"4d90\">\n<p><canvas height=\"45\" width=\"75\"><\/canvas><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*IQEPofSiMHvgF7wYu-q0ug.png\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*IQEPofSiMHvgF7wYu-q0ug.png\" style=\"width: 700px; height: 442px;\" \/><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p name=\"8374\" style=\"text-align: center;\">&ldquo;So Gavin Belson can just pick up his phone and make us radioactive to every single web hosting service?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p id=\"8374\" name=\"8374\">But&nbsp;<strong>big corporations will feel the costs as well<\/strong>&nbsp;considering both the growth rate of resources and the growth rate of their AI efforts multiplied. I spoke to a few Chief Data Officers of Fortune 500 firms over the past months, and while they don&rsquo;t consider it an issue yet, even they have to agree that they can invest their money in better ways than in bought-in HPC resources.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9754\" name=\"9754\">The beauty of&nbsp;<strong>blockchain ecosystems<\/strong>&nbsp;is that they allow to tap into otherwise unused resources, trade resources that would not have been tradable, and allow people to participate in a market that otherwise could not participate. From an economic perspective, it improves the leverage on existing resources.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bf36\" name=\"bf36\">Where 1st &amp; 2nd generation data blockchain solutions used this to lower the barrier for access to annotated quality data,&nbsp;<strong>Raven Protocol is going to solve the training cost challenge<\/strong>. It is closing the gap that would have prevented the proverbial chain to hold, that is only as strong as its weakest link (hint: it&rsquo;s the data value&nbsp;<em>chain<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p id=\"a258\" name=\"a258\">Together, the solutions in this blockchain data ecosystem create new opportunity and they lower cost.
