These tend to be favorite starting points, but they\u2019re all traps. Many businesses fall for them and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/quaesita_fail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">fail at machine learning<\/a>, but not you. You\u2019ll\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/quaesita_dmguide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">start right<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>But first, why are these the favorites? I\u2019d hate for you to wind up with the wrong degree!<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>If you\u2019re a\u00a0<strong>business leader<\/strong>, your instinct is to hire someone who sounds qualified. Great instinct! Except the person\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/quaesita_roles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">best qualified<\/a>\u00a0to start an applied AI project is not your garden variety AI PhD. It\u2019s\u2026 you! Whoops. With the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/quaesita_emperor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">algorithm<\/a>, naturally. You just spent 10 years of your life studying how to design new AI methods, so why would the leader want you to start elsewhere?\u00a0<em>Let\u2019s pick an algorithm\u2026 mmmm,\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/quaesita_emperor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>neural networks<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0are all the rage. Maybe we can figure out how to make them even cooler? Let\u2019s create a new approach! Now, what data can we shove into our new-ral network? Let\u2019s get you oriented with how to set a machine learning (or AI) project up for success.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:quote -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The right first step is to focus on outputs and objectives.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:quote -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Imagine that this ML\/AI system is already operating perfectly. Ask yourself what you would like it to produce when it does the next task. Don\u2019t worry how it does it. Imagine that it works already and it is solving some need your business has. (That\u2019s why you needed those qualifications. The right way to approach an applied project is to flip the algorithms-inputs-outputs order on its head, like so: think about outputs, then inputs, then algorithms!<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:quote -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Your order of operations might be a\u00a0mess.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:quote -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/quaesita_fail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">kitchen analogy<\/a>\u00a0comes in handy here. If you\u2019re running a restaurant (as opposed to an appliance factory or food science lab), why would you think about buying\u200a\u2014\u200aor, worse, inventing\u200a\u2014\u200aa pizza oven before you\u2019ve even considered whether adding pizza to your menu makes sense? That sounds like the rookie mistake of someone who\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/quaesita_fail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">doesn\u2019t know what business they\u2019re in<\/a>. But surely you don\u2019t want your police dog chasing sheep! Or vice versa, for that matter. A better answer is that it depends on what the\u00a0<em>owner<\/em>\u00a0wants. That\u2019s you! Diving into algorithms and data before figuring out what outputs would count as good or bad behavior is a bit like putting a puppy in a basement with food and water, then being surprised what comes out isn\u2019t good at being a police dog. You can\u2019t expect to just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/what-machine-learning-data-poisoning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sprinkle machine learning on your business<\/a>, leave it brewing, and get something useful.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3685a90 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"3685a90\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hackernoon.com\/hn-images\/0*HgrIsPwewwCjpOCf\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0d55c3d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0d55c3d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Analytics might a better fit for\u00a0you<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3bd018d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3bd018d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tApplied AI requires you to have to have a very clear vision of what your model needs to grow up into (and why), then you have to train it towards that. If you don\u2019t know what you want, head to the font of inspiration instead:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/quaesita_datasci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">analytics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:quote -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Spend some time figuring out what looks promising enough to pursue, then come back to machine learning when you\u2019re\u00a0ready.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:quote -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Besides,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/quaesita_datasci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">analytics<\/a>\u00a0uses some of the same math, so you wouldn\u2019t be lying if you told your friends you\u2019re using ML\/AI algorithms (though you\u2019re not building ML\/AI systems). Many people who think they want ML\/AI actually only need\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/quaesita_datasci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">analytics<\/a>. The latter is a great idea for all projects, while the former is good for only\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/quaesita_island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">certain kinds<\/a>. It\u2019s up to you to think about what you\u2019re looking for in a pet so you can train them towards your ideal\u2026 before you find out what the stuffing is made of.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:quote -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The right time to think about your goals is at the very beginning, while your project is still a\u00a0puppy!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:quote -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>What goes for puppies goes for ML\/AI systems. To figure out what success looks like, you don\u2019t need to understand how the puppy\u2019s brain learns from sensory inputs. You don\u2019t need to think about how those sensory signals are stored and processed (yet). What\u00a0<em>do<\/em>\u00a0you need is to figure out that you want a sheep dog (and what that means to you). To do your job thoroughly, you also need enough imagination to picture what behaviors you\u2019re aiming for and what you\u2019re trying to avoid.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Additionally, it helps to do a quick intuitive reality check: verify that relevant data is within your reach and that you have the hardware muscle to process it. If you\u2019re training a sheep dog, are you confident you can get hold of enough actual sheep to show it? Even if you have sheep, your puppy\u2019s brain needs to be able to take in and use information about them. If your \u201cpuppy\u201d is actually a fly larva, it\u2019s not going to be able to do good things with sensory data about sheep. (It can\u2019t\u00a0<em>run<\/em>\u00a0in production either.)
