But the range of things the media refers to as AI is&nbsp;<strong>very wide<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Expert Systems<\/li>\n<li>Process Automation<\/li>\n<li>Machine Learning<\/li>\n<li>Deep Learning<\/li>\n<li>Reinforcement Learning<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 and more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Interesting side note: The hotter the AI topic in the media, the less it tends to actually be used in businesses.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The hottest topics in the media are often the least valuable to businesses. These are generally still research cases and are rarely used in day-to-day applications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Types of AI Hype vs. Value\" src=\"https:\/\/images.ctfassets.net\/2yr4wv2jga4w\/6otI9TdHtmyW8ooWS2CSCk\/60cff97554f947499edd7b51f185c493\/Types_of_AI_Hype_v.s._Value.png\"><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"in-academia-ml-is-a-subfield-ai\">In Academia: ML is a subfield AI<\/h3>\n<p>To academics and people who have studied data science,&nbsp;<strong>Machine Learning is a subfield of the much larger field of AI<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Artificial Intelligence refers to a&nbsp;<strong>very large<\/strong>&nbsp;field of research that encompasses a number of techniques aimed at developing&nbsp;<em>computers that can learn and solve problems<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Computer Vision<\/li>\n<li>Supervised and Unsupervised Learning<\/li>\n<li>Reinforcement Learning and Genetic Algorithms<\/li>\n<li>Natural Language Processing<\/li>\n<li>Robotics (Motion)<\/li>\n<li>\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Machine Learning<\/strong>&nbsp;is the field of Artificial Intelligence concerned with&nbsp;<em>learning from data on its own<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Machine Learning part of Artificial Intelligence\" src=\"https:\/\/images.ctfassets.net\/2yr4wv2jga4w\/NU4DdF6qeQGIG6wYEce0W\/839d2616fdcadb9d897092fd91a1a502\/MachineLearning_part_of_Artificial_Intelligence.png\"><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"in-business-ml--ai\">In Business: ML \u2248 AI<\/h3>\n<p>In business, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning usually refer to&nbsp;<strong>the same thing<\/strong>. Why?
