Emotions start wars and create peace; spark love and force divorce. While unavoidable, emotions are also indispensable sources of orientation and propel us to take action. But unbridled emotion can make us and those around us to act irrationally.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/topic\/emotional-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emotional intelligence<\/a>\u00a0is a relatively new construct, but its impact on how we work will be significant moving forward. The first academic article on emotional intelligence appeared in 1990, but the topic didn\u2019t become mainstream until Daniel Goleman\u2019s 1995 book,\u00a0<em>Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ<\/em>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-843673d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"843673d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p>Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage one\u2019s personal emotions and the emotions of others.\u00a0Knowing how you&#8217;d feel in a certain situation helps you to gauge how others will feel in a similar environment thus enabling favorable social interactions and evoking favorable reactions from others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emotional intelligent people gain social aptitudes such as the ability to resolve conflict, teach others\u00a0or manage teams.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43c69f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"43c69f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>The business case for emotional intelligence<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4af4e11 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4af4e11\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p>Rising rates of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/352081\" rel=\"noopener\">loneliness<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.happinesslab.fm\/season-1-episodes\/you-can-change-w6YOz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">depression<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.happinesslab.fm\/season-1-episodes\/you-can-change-w6YOz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mental health<\/a>\u00a0concerns\u00a0represent an opportunity for companies and leaders to embrace emotional intelligence in order to reengage people at work and life.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/topic\/google\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a>\u2019s famous Project Aristotle initiative, a high-performing team needs three things: 1) a strong awareness of the importance of social connections or \u201csocial sensitivity,\u201d 2) an environment where each person speaks equally, and 3) psychological safety where everyone feels safe to show and employ themselves without fear of negative consequences. To harness these three elements of a successful team, it takes an emotionally intelligent leader.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-719314f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"719314f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p>People feel cared for when these three items are present among a team or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/topic\/organization\" rel=\"noopener\">organization<\/a>. People that feel cared for are more loyal, engaged, and productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limeade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/LimeadeInstitute_TheScienceOfCare_Whitepaper_Web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employees who feel cared for by their organization<\/a>\u00a0are\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>10 times\u00a0more likely to recommend their company as a great place to work.<\/li>\n<li>9 times\u00a0more likely to stay at their company for three or more years.<\/li>\n<li>7 times\u00a0more likely to feel included at work.<\/li>\n<li>4 times\u00a0less likely to suffer from stress and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/topic\/burnout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">burnout<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>2 times\u00a0as likely to be engaged at work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3cd327a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3cd327a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>1. Much like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplypsychology.org\/maslow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maslov\u2019s\u00a0Hierarchy\u00a0of Needs<\/a>, once humans fulfill the need of food, water and shelter they will then seek to be accepted for who they are, and then finally to learn and grow to become their best selves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the world advances, more and more survival needs are being consistently met causing the workforce to turn their attention to the next tier of needs, most immediately being belonging. Emotionally intelligent leaders are capable of extending belonging to their teams.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9280072 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9280072\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>2. Technology will enhance humanity<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-109832d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"109832d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p>The Industrial Revolution\u00a0required strong workers. The Information Age required knowledgeable workers. The future age of work will require emotionally intelligent workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the world fills with more sophisticated technology such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/topic\/artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/topic\/5g\" rel=\"noopener\">5G<\/a>, human skills like compassion and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/topic\/empathy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">empathy<\/a>\u00a0will define the competitive edge of workers and entire organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, as the world becomes more high-tech, there will be a desire and opportunity for more high-touch. As technology advances, it will take on a lot of the work that humans aren\u2019t good at, don\u2019t like, or too dangerous. This will leave us with more time and capacity to show up emotionally for each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if artificial intelligence can diagnose diseases\u00a0with greater accuracy than a doctor, doctors will have more margin to deliver the much needed human elements of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/how-to-leverage-emotional-intelligence-to-improve-your-empathy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">empathy <\/a>and compassion to patients. Or if robots can assemble a customer\u2019s meal more accurately and efficiently than a human, that creates an opportunity for a human to get out from behind the counter to hold the door for a customer or meet them at their car during a rainstorm.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a82e0a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a82e0a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>3. A pervasive myth exists that emotions don\u2019t belong at work, and this often leads us to mistakenly equate professionalism with being stoic or cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boundaries between work and life continue to blur. People are bringing more work home, and more personal life is spilling into work. Try as we might, we cannot flip a switch and leave our pain, joy, sorrow\u00a0and excitement at the office door. Emotions travel with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Liz Fossien, co-author of the\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0best-seller,\u00a0<em>No Hard Feelings: The Secret Power of Embracing Emotions at Work<\/em>, \u201cin the moments when our colleagues drop their glossy professional presentation, we are much more likely to believe what they are telling us. We feel connected to the people around us. We try harder. Perform better. And we are just generally kinder. So it\u2019s about time we learn how to embrace emotion at work.&#8221;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4e9b71c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4e9b71c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>4. And considering work is the activity\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com.au\/2017\/10\/18\/weve-broken-down-your-entire-life-into-years-spent-doing-tasks_a_23248153\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">people spend the most time engaged with after sleep<\/a>, employees are expecting more from the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More and more employers are leaning into the highly emotional aspects of their employees\u2019 lives. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.hilton.com\/corporate\/news\/hilton-introduces-bestinindustry-adoption-assistance-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hilton offers an adoption assistance program<\/a>\u00a0that will reimburse team members for qualified adoption expense up to $10,000 per child, with no limit to the number of adoptions. Facebook offers employees up to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/resourcesandtools\/hr-topics\/benefits\/pages\/facebook-bereavement-leave.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20 days of bereavement leave<\/a>\u00a0in the event of a family member\u2019s death.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As employees seek more from their employers, moving from employing to empowering will serve employers well.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c6ab292 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c6ab292\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>5. Generation Z demands it<\/h2>\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c771a03 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c771a03\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p>Companies are struggling to adapt to the evolving emotional needs of their workforce. This is especially true among the emerging generations as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/managing-mental-health-at-work-is-a-juggle-of-rights-and-realities-11581523201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">18-to-25-year-olds have the highest prevalence of serious mental illness<\/a>\u00a0compared to other age groups, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Additionally, Gen Z is the loneliest generation in the workplace with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/23\/loneliness-is-rising-younger-workers-and-social-media-users-feel-it-most.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">73 percent reporting sometimes or always feeling alone<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not surprising then that more than any other generation, Gen Z wants their managers to be empathetic, according to The Center for Generational Kinetics&#8217; 2020 study,\u00a0<em>Solving the Remote Work Challenge Across Generations<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the youth is the future, and Gen Z are lonely and psychologically stressed then the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/topic\/future-of-work\" rel=\"noopener\">future of work<\/a>\u00a0must be emotional intelligence.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Human emotion is one of the most powerful forces on the planet.
