When I first started out in data science, I was just like anybody else when it came to finding a job in data science space.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n

Long story short, I went to\u00a0job portals<\/strong>,\u00a0submitted hundreds of resumes<\/strong>\u00a0for various data scientist jobs, and\u00a0\u201choped\u201d for the best<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As expected, most of the time I got rejected to a certain point where my inbox was filled with email like:<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

And most importantly, I was facing a hard time to even get a chance for an interview.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

But there was a turning point<\/strong>\u00a0when I started being active on\u00a0LinkedIn<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by learning and sharing with the data science community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never did I realize I was actually building my personal brand as a data scientist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, I\u2019ve also been approached by recruiters\/headhunters and companies who are looking for data scientist role.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

More surprisingly, the door of opportunities opened up to me \u2014\u00a0speaking<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0writing<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0business<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These opportunities have not only helped me\u00a0discover my potential and step out of my comfort zone<\/a>, but have also brought my career, and even life, to a whole new level which I\u2019d not think possible.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Now, if you were to ask me if there is one thing that I hope I could have learned earlier in my career\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would be\u00a0building my personal brand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

There are many definitions of personal brand if you just google it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here is how I see what a personal brand means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personal branding is about being YOU \u2014 the authentic self with your belief, your own story and experience that demonstrates expertise and authority in your niche.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personal branding is not about faking your own brand and experiences just to impress hiring managers or employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see. Everyone is unique. Everyone has different perspective, different mindset, and different belief.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n

You don\u2019t need to be someone else but you. Personal brand is about who you\u2019re and how people perceive you even when you\u2019re not there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the best way to build a personal brand is to be YOU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are your values? What do you believe in and stand for? Why are you doing what you\u2019re doing? What motivates you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, my mission is to\u00a0make data science accessible to everyone<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0as well as to empower people and business with clarity and insights using data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is what I believe in and this is what motivates me. What about you?<\/p>\n\n\n

That\u2019s because of their\u00a0brands and what they believe in<\/strong><\/a>. Period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83c\udf4e\u00a0Apple<\/strong>\u00a0believes that people with passion can change the world for the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2714\ufe0f\u00a0Nike<\/strong>\u00a0honors great athletes and they honor great athletics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Apple and Nike rarely talked about their products and people are still buying them because people like their brands and believe in their vision.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

And this is very similar to building our personal brands. How would people perceive you when they think of you?\u00a0Your brand and belief are what attract people\/companies towards you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each of us has our own brands that we\u2019re carrying ourselves, knowingly or unknowingly. And that\u2019s why it is important that we have self-awareness and discover ourselves at a deeper level.<\/p>\n\n\n

If it\u2019s not obvious by now, building a personal brand is a long term strategy for job opportunities in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You won\u2019t immediately get approached by recruiters\/companies when you\u2019re starting out to build your personal brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It takes time to build and earn the\u00a0trust, credibility and relationship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But once you\u2019ve established your own personal brand in your niche\u2026 Trust me, job opportunities will gradually come to you as you\u2019ve positioned yourself as an authority in your space (data science in this case).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And guess what? You no longer have to submit hundreds \u2014 sometimes even thousands \u2014 of resumes to different job portals, hoping to get replies from them.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

2. Network with like-minded people<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n

During the journey of building your personal brand, chances are you\u2019ll leverage social media platforms (LinkedIn, Medium etc.) to provide content and add values to others and let it speak for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, you\u2019ll also have the opportunities to network with like-minded professionals in your space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What this means is that it allows you to\u00a0continue learning from others\u00a0<\/strong>while being able to share your passion and knowledge with others beyond geographic restrictions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

3. Discover more about yourself<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

You see. Talking about building personal brand is easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to really understand what your values are and what it is that you believe in\u2026 It\u2019s a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It takes honest, brutal and thorough\u00a0self-analysis and self-awareness\u00a0<\/strong>to truly discover yourself at a deeper level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll begin to question yourself for everything that you\u2019ve been doing and try to understand the WHY behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good news here is that you\u2019ll also be able to\u00a0understand and discover more about yourself to motivate and drive you forward<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

4. Inspire and help others<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

At the end of the day, building a personal brand is NOT about you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s about inspiring and helping others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s about how you can help other people with your passion, expertise and belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And being able to help others is one of the best gifts that I\u2019ve ever received as the fulfilment to help data science aspirants learn more about this field as well as to help business with data science solutions\u2026 is invaluable.<\/p>\n\n\n
