Many businesses are quickly shifting their focus toward maintaining supply to meet demands, which are rapidly shifting. However, leaders should also view this as an opportunity to better plan for future unpredictable disruptions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d23fa9c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d23fa9c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>No leader can predict exactly when and where disasters will hit. But they can learn from what&#8217;s happening now \u2014 at a time when it\u2019s hitting everyone, everywhere \u2014 to move away from a largely reactive model toward one that better protects customers, workers and the business. This will require confronting and overcoming fear and uncertainty around product shortages, while assessing the impact of COVID-19 on supply chain and logistics operations. Identifying actions now to help improve resilience into the future will ultimately strengthen retail operations and the global supply chain.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-13c95ee elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"13c95ee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>To help, retailers should use this time to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies such as automation and intelligent workflows to maintain longevity of the business amid periods of uncertainty. According to a new IBM Institute for Business Value report,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/thought-leadership\/institute-business-value\/report\/covid-19-supply-chains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19 and Shattered Supply Chains<\/a>, supply chains should be dynamic, responsive and interconnected to an organization\u2019s ecosystem and processes. This smarter supply chain requires end-to-end visibility, real-time insights and decisive actions, particularly in situations like this.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d64881c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d64881c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Retailers must walk away from this situation having learned that no company can afford not to have a multidimensional, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/retail-dynamics-of-the-internet-of-things-in-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">dynamic <\/a>supply strategy that&#8217;s capable of responding to disruption. For instance, these changes may affect supply routes, allowing product to reach certain markets faster. As a result, organizations may create something better than what existed before \u2014 but no new system comes without its own issues. This is where retailers can apply AI to unstructured, real-time data, generating alerts to help predict disruptions and vulnerabilities, and then providing visibility and insights for recommended corrective actions. This includes assessing geopolitical risks, climate change, cybersecurity issues, and natural disasters. As we see different demand curves flatten over time in the immediate term, organizations need to make sure their entire ecosystem understands the overall strategy for ramping back up again.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In this period of extreme uncertainty, retailers must continue to confront immediate challenges, while focusing on what the future of their business will look like. These organizations are learning how to better manage, foresee and limit the severity of disruptions by building the capabilities necessary to respond to future events with both pace and certainty.
