Or maybe it&#8217;s exactly the right time.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The conversations I\u2019m having with hundreds of people in small businesses &#8212; all of them facing the brutal realities of the pandemic \u2013 keep bringing me back to soft skills in a time of hard decisions.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9159cb7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9159cb7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>We\u2019re all still absorbing the magnitude and astounding speed of what\u2019s happening. We hit unemployment levels in three weeks that took 10 months in the 1930s. The latest U.N. estimates say nearly 200 million jobs could be lost around the world in the second quarter.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Soft skills in the face of that kind of economic carnage and personal loss? Really? What are we even talking about?<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>A real focus on empathy, active listening, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/how-to-leverage-emotional-intelligence-to-improve-your-empathy\/\">emotional intelligence<\/a>, or even building new digital expertise or critical thinking skills, that\u2019s not second nature for a lot of people &#8212; especially people who built careers at the end of the business spectrum occupied by digits, data, tracking, accounting and forecasting.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4435722 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4435722\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I\u2019m one of them. I became an accountant because I wanted to learn the foundation of the numbers and support small businesses. However, I quickly found that most of the work was data crunching and providing insights far too late for them to be meaningful. And soft skills were an afterthought.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Yet even in those safer and more stable times, accountants and bookkeepers were hearing some version of a message that sounded like: &#8220;That day is passing. There\u2019s got to be more to what you do. Change or get left on the side of the road.&#8221;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>We heard the suggestion: acquire new skills and deliver a different kind of value, but resisted. It was an invitation extended at the point of a sword; change veiled in a threat, but not absolute, existential urgency.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ade6eef elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ade6eef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>That might be changing \u2013 whether it\u2019s just because we desire to be better people, or because that invitation to evolve is an idea whose time has come.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I believe it\u2019s inevitable that traditional accounting will evolve to become a more fully developed business advisory role. And in that scenario, the \u201cminimum viable offering\u201d will include more emotional content and a requirement to engage our customers with a more genuine, human connection, awareness and understanding of their situations.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Exactly what might that new profile look like? It\u2019s going to look a lot more familiar than we might think.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b3e03a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3b3e03a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Does it seem that talking about awareness and human connection is too soft? Then let\u2019s make this as tangible as our home field in tax management; that depth of understanding and fundamental connection to any customer\u2019s business.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n<li>That\u2019s nothing new, and certainly doesn\u2019t feel scary or intimidating. We\u2019ve always possessed that knowledge. Now the question is about how we can extend it, perhaps add a digital capability, scale the expertise, create a new service with new price points for smaller customers and expand our influence.<\/li>\n<li>None of that is hard to envision, nor is it a big step to convert that heritage into new advisory services, some of which might aim at protecting jobs and people. Provide that advice, get it right, and you earn immeasurable loyalty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Is building increased empathy too vague? Then let\u2019s think in terms of accountants as translators.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22a63d6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"22a63d6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n<li>Who is in a better position to understand a business\u2019s pressures and opportunities? Why not take on the role of advisor on topics that fall beyond the expertise of the owner, like the relevance of advanced technologies \u2013 digital platforms, blockchain, robotics, the cloud; or apply that same level of insight to advise on the availability of employee resources in areas spanning individual financial planning, elder care or mental health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Is emotional intelligence too esoteric? Then let\u2019s reduce it to change management.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n<li>We all know that in any change program, the big issues are about people \u2013 and are addressed via communication and clarity; listening and addressing what threatens people or activating what motivates them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a2c472 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8a2c472\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I tend to think the profession is farther down this path than most accountants and bookkeepers realize. Not everyone. Not across the board, and certainly not because the profession has been super intentional about embedding training in those areas during those long years of training on the path to a CPA.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Right now, every small business is forced to play the ultimate short game \u2013 not as a matter of competitive advantage, but as a matter of survival &#8212; sorting out how to preserve staffing, adjust supply chains, defer payments, or negotiate collections.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f7eb02b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f7eb02b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In any one of those situations, how fully will they be able to empathize with the situations of a trading partner that\u2019s facing an identical situation and making the same trade-offs. What\u2019s the basis for decisions on relaxing terms and conditions? When taking on a new customer, do we have the required analysis and insight on their financial situation and prospects?<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>And if we had a deeper, broad-based, collective sense of empathy, awareness and understanding of another\u2019s situation, is it just possible we could make better decisions and more of them &#8212; more reasonable, with more balance to sustain more businesses that can collect a portion, pay something, survive these conditions and square accounts later?<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>As we make those choices, each of us is assessing how the businesses we work with are responding to our needs, especially in this time of crisis. Do my trading partners care about my business and my problems? In the same way, we can be certain that our customers are making the same assessments of our performance. Some of these soft skills may be what makes the difference when we get our report card in the way of future business.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d47d135 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d47d135\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>Final point.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b64621 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2b64621\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Empathy isn\u2019t sympathy or pity, any more than this near-term set of conditions is permanent. Empathy is insight and understanding, and the long game of building sustainable businesses that create value and employ people remains.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The choices we make now are choices we\u2019ll live with far beyond the current crisis. These so-called soft considerations matter, in the short and long term, perhaps now more than ever.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019re all still absorbing the magnitude and astounding speed of what\u2019s happening.
