Collapsing revenues have magnified conventional business problems, but the pandemic is also straining emotional muscles many executives never flex at work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5baee9a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5baee9a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Employees are experiencing sorrow over loss of loved ones, opportunities and savings.\u00a0Many grieve the loss of a way of life that they fear is forever gone.\u00a0For the first time, business leaders find themselves in the unusual role of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commander-in-chief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Comforter-in-Chief<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Some may argue that political and religious authorities are better suited to the role of comforter. In the past, when productivity was primarily based on routine procedures, it wasn&#8217;t as costly for business leaders to ignore employees&#8217; emotional needs.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b810a30 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b810a30\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>But in today\u2019s uncertainty, executives have to empower their employees to imagine, experiment, and take initiative if their organizations are to survive.\u00a0Leadership sets the tone and creates the environment for psychological safety, which in turn gives employees the confidence to challenge conventional thinking and take strategic risks.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>So how can business leaders begin to approach this new role? Here are four ways, informed by conversations I&#8217;ve had recently as head of a leadership center at Duke University and as an advisor to chief executives.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a9900ba elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a9900ba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><strong>Lean into your discomfort.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-12c652c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"12c652c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Take time to feel the ebb and flow of emotions\u2014some of which you can\u2019t yet name\u2014and reflect on them.\u00a0Your willingness to feel that discomfort and be vulnerable are key to your capacity to connect. You can\u2019t be an effective comforter unless you understand what it\u2019s like to need comfort and be comforted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52c241d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"52c241d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><strong>Avoid the problem-solving mindset.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e724314 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e724314\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>A fix-it attitude can&#8217;t produce words of comfort. Grief is not fixable.\u00a0Rather, as Edith Cooper, who helped lead Goldman Sachs through the 2008 financial crisis as its head of human capital, tells me, \u201cIt\u2019s about listening. It\u2019s about reaching out and letting them know that you were thinking of them and then give them the space to talk about their grief.\u201c\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d27a7ec elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d27a7ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><strong>Build trust through touchstone memories.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading --><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-63328aa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"63328aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Have you encouraged and shown care so that when you reach out now, your presence can lift?\u00a0And in making the tough decisions for the survival of the organization, do employees trust that you are doing it with greatest compassion?
