But according to two Canadian professors, software won\u2019t make or break the success of a remote team, but worker skills will.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8206d85 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8206d85\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p>In 2018, Roberta Sawatzky MA, CPHR from the Okanagan College School of Business, and her son, Nathan J. Sawatzky, an\u00a0Online Social &amp; Safety Designer at Supercell,\u00a0embarked on an international tour of coworking spaces and remote work meetups to research the necessary competencies for success in a virtual, technology environment. After extensive surveys, interviews, and data analysis, the \u201cvalue of competencies along with research regarding the empowerment of virtual teams on their effectiveness was evident.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe saw that telecommuting was going to be critical in the future of business, but we wondered if organizations were ready for the shift in workplace. In this research, eight skills are showcased as essential to success in a virtual workplace. How do you and your colleagues measure up?\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-66a3d47 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"66a3d47\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Virtual workers don\u2019t have drop-bys, hallway meetings, and handshakes to stay connected and visible. Additionally, nonverbal communication is extremely limited, which can inhibit effective communication. Therefore, we are what we share. Go above and beyond in communicating what you\u2019re doing, by writing comprehensive but succinct messages, promptly responding to others, speaking transparently about needs and feelings, and proactively asking questions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-005efc5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"005efc5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Self-Motivation\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a70931d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a70931d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p><em>Self-Check: Can you take initiative without being prompted or rewarded?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because remote work can\u2019t be physically supervised, productivity is measured by results. So, if you\u2019re extrinsically motivated, the feedback and praise that you\u2019re wanting isn\u2019t going to happen until after your project is over. A teleworker must be able to start and pace appropriately on their own, then identify more work to be done after that project is complete. In other words, you can\u2019t wait around for your boss to drop by with a new assignment. It\u2019s your job to stay busy during work hours, and sometimes that even means ambitiously making new work for yourself.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a154c47 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a154c47\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Doubt, worry, and micromanagement will only divide your team and slow output. You can build trust within your team by celebrating progress together, creating a safe space for failure and questions, evenly distributing workloads, and, most importantly, being trustworthy yourself.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e6c3567 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e6c3567\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2><strong>4. Discipline<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading --><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0515e55 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0515e55\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><em>Self-Check: Are you in control of your own time, tasks, and energy?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>If you\u2019ve been depending on your boss walking by to snap you out of a YouTube rabbit hole, or seeing your office mate walk to the conference room to keep you on schedule, you\u2019re going to be in a world of hurt when working remotely. \u201cFreedom\u201d from the office comes with the caveat that you\u2019re now independently responsible for your own self-management and staying on task throughout the day. This can take some time to learn and master, but starting with a time-blocked schedule and prioritized to do list can help.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d8c631 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6d8c631\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><strong>5. Curiosity &amp; Critical Thinking<\/strong><\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading --><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3fd800a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3fd800a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><em>Self-Check: Can you independently analyze, evaluate, and strategize an issue?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Working independently requires being independent. The people on your team are no longer within arm\u2019s reach for support and assistance. So, be resourceful and creative as you solve the problem alone. Think through questions like:\u00a0<em>What is the problem? Where is it coming from? Is there anyone that can help me overcome my barrier? Are there any resources that I currently have that could help me solve the issue?<\/em>\u00a0Do as much as you can alone, but also remember that many problems require collaboration to solve, but when working from home no one is going to notice you looking stressed and come over to offer assistance. So, if you need help, exercise skills #1 and #2 and proactively ask for it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-59ab7c1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"59ab7c1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><strong>6. Well, get used to it. If a brick-and-mortar office is symbolic of permanency and stability, then it\u2019s understandable that a virtual workspace is complementary to that with agile workflows and quick communication. The pace of the virtual business world is notoriously fast. Tools, deadlines, and developments are no longer arduously discussed and contemplated in meetings before implementation, a quick call or notification can mean a full pivot in direction, and workers need to be able to \u201cgo with the flow without compromising the integrity of the assignment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-93bfd0d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"93bfd0d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><strong>7. Based on the other critical skills of self-motivation, trustworthiness, and communication, it can be deduced that it\u2019s the worker\u2019s responsibility to not only be productive, but prove that they were, and to confidently claim ownership for their work by meeting deadlines, fulfilling commitments, and accepting consequences. Prove that you\u2019re engaged in your work regardless of location by demonstrating a new kind of \u201cpresence\u201d \u2014 instead of physically arriving at the office, \u201cshow up\u201d to work with full attention and accountability. Your coworkers won\u2019t be able to see you at your desk, but they\u2019ll certainly be able to see your commitment to your work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a8c4472 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a8c4472\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2><strong>8. Empathy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading --><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fd65042 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fd65042\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><em>Self-Check: Are you aware and considerate of other people\u2019s feelings<\/em><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In the academic report, Sawatzky stresses the importance of this final skill, noting that \u201cempathy is the glue that binds all the competencies together.\u201d Without nonverbal cues to watch that signal someone\u2019s mood, reactions, and emotions, our emotional intelligence has to be stronger than ever. How might the message that we\u2019re about to send be interpreted? My colleague said they\u2019re \u201cbusy;\u201d does that mean they\u2019re stressed and would appreciate assistance? Sawatzky advises, \u201cBeing diligent in asking appropriate questions and listening to not just what is being said, but also the sentiment behind those words, contributes to the success of a remote worker.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>With millions of workers around the world suddenly and unexpectedly working from home, no time could be more relevant to understand and evaluate these habits in each member of our workforces.
