The panel included software executives and VCs.<\/p>\n<p>And then it came. An awkward conversation about product management.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who does it report to?<\/li>\n<li>What does it do?<\/li>\n<li>What value does it create?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was clear. I was not dreaming. But it was a nightmare. I found a few MBA programs that offer specialization in product management.<\/p>\n<p>I found many articles on &#8220;which liberal arts majors&#8221; are benefifical to become a product manager.&#8221; I may have contributed to the confusion when I wrote &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/why-did-you-major-philosophy-michael-riemer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why Did I Major in Philosophy?<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Product management is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/product-management-more-art-than-science-michael-riemer\/?lipi=urn%3Ali%3Apage%3Ad_flagship3_profile_view_base_post_details%3BdJtYWNyjR%2BC71R1fVrfUeQ%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">both art and science.<\/a>\u00a0You can teach it. You can learn it. But you also need to experience it.<\/p>\n<p>If there is no college degree, what is product management?<\/p>\n<h2>What is Product Management?<\/h2>\n<p>My kids, friends, and family members always ask me what I do. No matter how hard I try, I usually get blank stares.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>&#8220;I build stuff. Software for businesses.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That usually suffices.<\/p>\n<p>People find products to be tangible. Much easier to understand than the process to create them. So, it seems mysterious.<\/p>\n<p>But product managers don&#8217;t build products.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/blackboxofpm.com\/the-first-principles-of-product-management-ea0e2f2a018c?gi=68a3303f7d30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>PMs do not directly build, operate, support or market the product, instead they enable those around them to do it better.\u00a0<\/em><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Designers and human factors experts create designs. Engineers and developers code. Others test, integrate and deploy. And then others market, sell and support it.<\/p>\n<p>If they don&#8217;t build stuff, what is product management?<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Product Management?<\/h2>\n<p>Product management seems to be an amorphous, fuzzy thing.<\/p>\n<p>Some call it the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/high-tech\/our-insights\/product-managers-for-the-digital-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">CEO of the product.<\/a>&#8221; Others claim there are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@kit_ulrich\/the-6-types-of-product-managers-which-one-do-you-need-75c2e66dd592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">multiple types of product managers<\/a>. And others have differentiated roles\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.aha.io\/the-product-manager-vs-the-technical-product-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">based on level of technical acumen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In search of some clarity, I met the team at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/productsavvy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ProductSavvy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 700px; height: 132px;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/C4D12AQFuv8fKUwK0qQ\/article-inline_image-shrink_1500_2232\/0?e=2130105600&amp;v=beta&amp;t=_Q07_KOF5fGSZWr_tAWX3ugWhjq-dbXg6MRrVUqKHNE\" data-li-src=\"https:\/\/media.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/C4D12AQFuv8fKUwK0qQ\/article-inline_image-shrink_1500_2232\/0?e=2130105600&amp;v=beta&amp;t=_Q07_KOF5fGSZWr_tAWX3ugWhjq-dbXg6MRrVUqKHNE\" data-media-urn=\"urn:li:digitalmediaAsset:C4D12AQFuv8fKUwK0qQ\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They are\u00a0<u>not<\/u>\u00a0a development shop. They answer the \u201cProduct Management\u201d quandary.<\/p>\n<p>Many startups, in their experience, do not understand product management.\u00a0Resulting in product delays and delivery issues. So ProductSavvy leads them through the process. Demonstrating the value of product management.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>They are product management experts for hire.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the last few years, more than 50 companies have used their service \u2013 with a typical contract term of 2 to 4 years.<\/p>\n<p>So, I asked for their definition. What is product management?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>&#8220;<\/em><\/strong>Product management is a critical role in a software company. It requires business, technology and customer skills. They collaborate with customers and internal teams (engineering, sales, customer success, etc.). It&#8217;s their responsibility to ensure delivery of valuable product outcomes.&#8221; Andy Richman, Partner, ProductSavvy<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;They have a broad set of responsibilities. Using business and customer metrics, they manage feature prioritization. They deliver use cases, requirements and high-level user experiences. They speak \u201cbusiness\u201d and \u201ctech\u201d proficiently. And bridge the gap between those parts of the business. Good product management improves development efficiency and velocity as well as product usability.&#8221; Jonathan Chashper, CEO and Founder, ProductSavvy<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The ProductSavvy team identified four major business implications of poor product management:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Poor product-market fit.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>The wrong product gets developed. It does not address market needs. Rather, it\u2019s driven by \u201cfounder needs.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Companies overspend.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Engineering and other resources are not effective. Wasting millions of dollars. Taking longer for market-fit or running out money trying.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Missed customer commitments<\/em><\/strong>. Inconsistent and unreliable product delivery times.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Lower job satisfaction<\/em><\/strong>. Mistrust develops between business and technical teams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If product management delivers such great value, why is it not more recognized?<\/p>\n<h2>What is Product Management?<\/h2>\n<p>Buzzword, acronyms and new memes seem to appear daily. They engage customers and other team members. The requirements and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2GUf7FJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">user personas<\/a>\u00a0become clearer.\u00a0Establishing the product value and outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>This is the beginning of the new product introduction (NPI) process.<\/p>\n<p>The UX design flows from the requirements. Specifications follow. If the initial process is not followed, issues arise. Delays and other impacts occur.<\/p>\n<p>Product managers participate in stand-ups, scrums and other activities in the agile process (yellow). But they have a limited role in technical exploration (blue). Everyone has an opinion.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI know how to fix your product.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI have a great feature idea.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But customers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/customers-never-right-michael-riemer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">may not always be right<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All kidding aside, teammates,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/customers-never-right-michael-riemer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">customers<\/a>\u00a0and partners are all key participants.<\/p>\n<p>There are many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/product-management-more-art-than-science-michael-riemer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sources of input<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/whos-your-competition-michael-riemer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Competition<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Indirect Customer Feedback\u00a0(Social Media and Review Sites)<\/li>\n<li>Product Usage and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/you-missing-key-saas-metric-michael-riemer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Engagement Metrics<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Qualitative Market Research<\/li>\n<li>Quantitative Market Research<\/li>\n<li>Customer Outcomes &amp; Value\u00a0Analysis (Customer ROI)<\/li>\n<li>Company Values\u00a0&amp; Target Business Metrics<\/li>\n<li>Technology Innovation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/high-tech\/our-insights\/product-managers-for-the-digital-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Product managers\u00a0are the glue that bind the many functions that touch a product\u2014engineering, design, customer success, sales, marketing, operations, finance, legal, and more.
