This paper poses and answers 10 questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This post is available as a PDF to download and cite on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/340756655_Coronavirus_COVID-19_-_What&#039;s_Next_Future_of_Work_Business_and_Law_Automation_Transparency_Blockchain_Education_and_Inspiration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">ResearchGate<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3580019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">SSRN<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/5-workforce-predictions-for-2020\/\">predictions <\/a>for the COVID-19 era and beyond based on my research.<a href=\"https:\/\/adamsulkowski.wordpress.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1681&amp;action=edit#_ftn1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd54f7b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"dd54f7b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"93de\"><strong>Question One: will the novel coronavirus \/ COVID19 accelerate automation?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cded4d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cded4d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p><strong>Answer: yes.\u00a0<\/strong>Automation has already evolved beyond manufacturing to other business processes. This trend is likely to accelerate as a result of the pandemic. Some of the under-appreciated potential of blockchain \u2014 or distributed ledger technology \u2014 relates to maintaining credible records, certification, and self-executing smart contracts. We are now acutely aware of how quality certification in a supply chain can be a vital matter of life-or-death. We worry about the viability of supply chains that rely on people who can get sick.\u00a0<strong>So it seems a reasonable to expect to see more blockchain-enabled automation in supply chains, with several implications explored in my recent article in\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/328649226_Blockchain_Business_Supply_Chains_Sustainability_and_Law_The_Future_of_Governance_Legal_Frameworks_and_Lawyers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong><em>Blockchain, Business Supply Chains, Sustainability, and Law: The Future of Governance, Legal Frameworks, and Lawyers<\/em><\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/328649226_Blockchain_Business_Supply_Chains_Sustainability_and_Law_The_Future_of_Governance_Legal_Frameworks_and_Lawyers?fbclid=IwAR02lfhtByPImfU5THxmgH7OZWOC396bwtETZ-CCa_Cr2yyw34C7li9dGRM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong><em>?[2]<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/328649226_Blockchain_Business_Supply_Chains_Sustainability_and_Law_The_Future_of_Governance_Legal_Frameworks_and_Lawyers?fbclid=IwAR02lfhtByPImfU5THxmgH7OZWOC396bwtETZ-CCa_Cr2yyw34C7li9dGRM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">However, the pandemic has also highlighted the pitfalls of automation described in the article<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>Among them, there will be a greater need to (1) proactively ponder contingencies and consequences (as I advocated with Joan MacLeod Heminway in\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/335639322_BLOCKCHAINS_CORPORATE_GOVERNANCE_AND_THE_LAWYER&#039;S_ROLE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong><em>Blockchains, Corporate Governance, and the Lawyer\u2019s Role<\/em><\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/adamsulkowski.wordpress.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1681&amp;action=edit#_ftn3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>[3]<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0and with Gerlinde Berger-Walliser and Paul Shrivastava in\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/318008037_Using_Proactive_Legal_Strategies_for_Corporate_Environmental_Sustainability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong><em>Using Proactive Legal Strategies for Corporate Environmental Sustainability<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/adamsulkowski.wordpress.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1681&amp;action=edit#_ftn4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>[4]<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0and (2) preserve a role for human discretion when the unforeseeable happens.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5a6b2c9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5a6b2c9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3f5e\"><strong>Question Two: will some of us keep working from home?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24e0b36 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"24e0b36\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p><strong>Answer: to some extent, for some of us, yes, this trend is likely to continue.\u00a0<\/strong>Also, some administrative structures are likely to erode. Again, this trend was foreseeable prior to March of 2020: the same advances mentioned above can be used to automate the sets of rules-and-agreements that define our work relationships.\u00a0<strong>Some administrative oversight and support roles will likely be automated away, especially as we realize the efficiencies of working remotely. On the other hand, once again, the current crisis highlights the need to proactively ponder what ethical standards we want to hardcode (whether intentionally, or de facto, through omission), as described in\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/336316096_THE_TAO_OF_DAO_HARDCODING_BUSINESS_ETHICS_ON_BLOCKCHAIN\/stats#fullTextFileContent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong><em>Tao of DAO: Hardcoding Business Ethics on Blockchain<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/adamsulkowski.wordpress.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1681&amp;action=edit#_ftn5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>[5]<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51bb5e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"51bb5e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ea05\"><strong>Question Three: will demand for greater transparency in government continue?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-81bd7be elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"81bd7be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p><strong>Answer: depends on the government, but generally yes.\u00a0<\/strong>In the USA, there have been demands for greater transparency, even from governments that are widely seen to have responded the COVID-19 outbreak comparatively effectively, such as California. In a recent article,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/303818652_City_Sustainability_Reporting_An_Emerging_Desirable_Legal_Necessity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong><em>City Sustainability Reporting: An Emerging and Desirable Legal Necessity<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/adamsulkowski.wordpress.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1681&amp;action=edit#_ftn6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>[6]<\/strong><\/a>I reviewed the evolution of the materiality standard and steps taken by the SEC, and suggested that reporting on a wider array of societal, environmental, and governance data is becoming a necessity for those local governments that have issued about $4 trillion in securities. So, regardless of the pandemic, I see this trend continuing.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ccc955 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7ccc955\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a033\"><strong>Question Four: will we demand more transparency from businesses as well?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-058bf3f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"058bf3f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p><strong>Answer: yes.\u00a0<\/strong>We already see investors suing companies for misleading statements or lack of disclosure of risks related to the pandemic. I have been researching and writing about transparency since 2005, including how it relates to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/284673685_More_disclosurebetter_CSR_reputation_An_examination_of_CSR_reputation_leaders_and_laggards_in_the_global_oil_and_gas_industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">reputation<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/adamsulkowski.wordpress.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1681&amp;action=edit#_ftn7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">[7]<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/228221998_Environmental_Disclosure_Environmental_Performance_and_Firm_Characteristics_An_Analysis_of_SP_100_Firms\" target=\"_blank\" cultures<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/adamsulkowski.wordpress.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1681&amp;action=edit#_ftn12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[12]<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/272244991_Beyond_Sustainability_Reporting_Integrated_Reporting_is_Practiced_Required_More_Would_Be_Better\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">the extent to which reporting on societal, environmental, and governance practices is an evolving legal expectation<\/a>.<a expect more research into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/228203284_Financial_Performance_Pollution_Measures_and_the_Propensity_to_Use_Corporate_Responsibility_Reporting_Implications_for_Business_and_Legal_Scholarship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">the relationship between various firm characteristics, measures of performance, and transparency<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/adamsulkowski.wordpress.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1681&amp;action=edit#_ftn14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[14]<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/264824029_The_relationships_among_environmental_management_firm_value_and_other_firm_attributes_Evidence_from_Chinese_manufacturing_industry\" class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p><strong>Answer: yes, and some have been embracing this, with positive effects for both shareholders and other stakeholders.\u00a0<\/strong>Together with Mel Edwards and Ed Freeman (the father of stakeholder theory),\u00a0<strong>we pointed out the trend and benefits of shaking stateholders out of complacency in our article,\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/318280760_Shake_Your_Stakeholder_Firms_Leading_Engagement_to_Cocreate_Sustainable_Value\" target=\"_blank\" gathering, use of, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/228243486_Cyber-Extortion_Duties_and_Liabilities_Related_to_the_Elephant_in_the_Server_Room\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">intended (or unintended, or even coerced) disclosure of data creates legal risk of which attorneys should be aware<\/a>.<a
