Edge computing also provides many of these features. Edge and cloud computing are not mutually exclusive, they often co-exist in many solutions to optimize end-to-end services delivery. Cloud-native IoT allows automated\u00a0<em>scale-up<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>scale-down<\/em>computing and storage capacity, according to administrator policies. The intent is to cope with sudden changes in generated IoT data volumes.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b29ed88 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b29ed88\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-15b6b9e\" data-id=\"15b6b9e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-827d6cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"827d6cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHigh throughput: IoT software must handle high volumes of data without any impact on system performance. It is important to recognize that IoT traffic can be \u2018bursty\u2019 and that data sources can be highly synchronized. Some would counter this argument by saying IoT is characterized by low data throughputs generated by constrained, low-power devices. But, even in this case, the resource and application monitoring logs generated by a large number of IoT gateways could be very substantial \u2013 typically several Gigabytes of data. These logs need to be transferred, correlated with other logs and acted upon to detect or isolate failures as well as make recommendations for predictive maintenance, for example. Here we see why cloud-native tools such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kafka.apache.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Apache Kafka<\/a>\u00a0use massive parallelism to collect and process high throughputs of datasets. Another important concept for high throughput is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MapReduce\" rel=\"noopener\">MapReduce<\/a>, a programming model that allows the splitting of large datasets into smaller ones and the movement of processing closer to data.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1a45d37 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1a45d37\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7ed4c3d\" data-id=\"7ed4c3d\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d81a42a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d81a42a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLow latency: Low latency is essential to applications such as autonomous driving or industrial automation. Edge computing drives latency lower by moving computing resources closer to the field domain where an action takes place. This must be matched by system architecture designs that are able to support low latency. There is no single mechanism to achieve low latency \u2013 programmers and system architects need a toolbox so that they can mix-and-match tools to meet the different requirements and traffic patterns associated with applications. Examples of such tools include brokers capable of routing IoT application messages in (near) real time. There are also evolutions of MapReduce that make massive use of in-memory databases capable of meeting low-latency requirements.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-efb1f78 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"efb1f78\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-42ba6fe\" data-id=\"42ba6fe\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bd7c352 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bd7c352\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNo single point of failure: The software components of an IoT server could be optimized around tasks performed for specific purposes, referred to as microservices. Microservices communicate using message brokers. Both microservices and brokers run on virtual machines or containers, the latter providing a lightweight software environment to host individual processes. The design, orchestration and administration of the microservices that make up an IoT platform, as well as that of the broker used for communications, must be done in such a way that avoids single points of failure (a point of failure with serious ramifications for the operation of the entire IoT service). This is where an open-source container orchestration system such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kubernetes.io\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Kubernetes<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.docker.com\/engine\/swarm\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Docker Swarm<\/a>\u00a0comes into play. Kubernetes, in particular, enables the monitoring of an IoT platform and subsequent recovery from failures independently of the cloud infrastructure. The task of developing IoT platforms using cloud-native principles has often been left to IoT implementers. We expect that industry groups dealing with IoT and its applications in different domains will take increasing responsibility for the development of such guidelines.
