Cars, buildings, roadways, airplanes, home appliances, and other items have tens of billions of sensors, processors, and internet-connected gadgets. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/iot\/future-with-without-iot\/\">IoT devices<\/a> detect motion, regulate temperature, share and collect data, measure weather, and provide location information, power <a href=\"http:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/iot\/top-9-logistics-industry-trends-innovations-in-2021\/\">logistics<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/iot\/5-ways-automation-is-advancing-medical-research\/\">medical research<\/a>. They also enable self-driving vehicles, to name just a few of their functions. IoT devices are also playing a role in combating hunger by empowering farmers and food producers with tech-enabled tools. This article will examine several applications of IoT-enabled agriculture that give a glimpse of where we\u2019re headed.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b7e4f64 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b7e4f64\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Connected flour mills bring better nutrition to 100 million Africans<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3718501 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3718501\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Malnutrition is a huge problem around the world, taking a massive toll on human health. An estimated two billion people worldwide are affected by micronutrient malnutrition, meaning they don\u2019t get the proper vitamins and minerals from their food supply. This causes high rates of disease, especially in children, such as birth defects, intellectual disabilities, development issues, and blindness. And, nowhere is malnutrition as prevalent as in Africa, where poor soils, harsh weather, fast-growing populations, and poverty combine to create the perfect storm.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4519d74 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4519d74\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Sanku-Project Healthy Children (Sanku-PHC) is a non-profit that is working to equip small flour mills across Africa with special machines called \u201cdosifiers\u201d that add vital nutrients to flour during the milling process. By 2030, flour mills equipped with Sanku-PHC dosifiers will provide over 100 million people with lifesaving enriched flour.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-799c7ca elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"799c7ca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Many of these flour mills are in remote, rural areas, making it difficult to check in regularly on the dosifiers to ensure they\u2019re working correctly. That\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/an-internet-of-things-initiative-with-a-humanitarian-purpose\/\" rel=\"noopener\">where IoT comes in<\/a>. The dosifiers are equipped with sensors and SIM cards to collect data in real-time and relay it to Sanku-PHC\u2019s web and mobile management platform, allowing staff to keep tabs on hundreds of dosifiers across Africa via a smartphone app.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-88d88ab elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"88d88ab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The IoT devices fitted with SIM cards continuously provide information about equipment status, power supply, and maintenance requirements. The devices also monitor miller compliance and fortification accuracy. All this data is sent to the Sanku-PHC platform every five minutes, whereas previously, Sanku-PHC relied on in-person visits and paper-based monitoring. The real-time data feed is also linked to Sanku-PHC\u2019s inventory management system, enabling automated flour and nutrient-mix deliveries.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af172d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"af172d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The result? Far higher efficiency, compliance, and effectiveness, which results in more families eating enriched foods and fewer children suffering from malnutrition. Meanwhile, tractor owners make money by providing services with their equipment when not in use. The entire system works via a mobile app pairing up tractor supply with tractor demand \u2014sort of like an Uber of tractors. But, unlike Uber, the tractor owners don\u2019t usually drive their tractors; they hire operators, so they must be equipped with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iotworldtoday.com\/2021\/07\/06\/africas-iot-uber-for-tractors-highlighted-at-evolution-expo\/\" rel=\"noopener\">SIM-cards and IoT sensors<\/a> that can communicate data about their availability, location, fuel usage, and maintenance status.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-660e32b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"660e32b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For farmers, the IoT sensors make it easy to find available tractors nearby and to check them out via a mobile app. For tractor owners, the IoT sensors provide peace of mind because they allow owners to remotely track the location and usage metrics in order to ensure their equipment is not stolen or used inappropriately. It ushered in the era of farming <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2021\/07\/17\/farming-is-finally-ready-for-robots\/\" rel=\"noopener\">robots<\/a>, powered devices that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-56195288\" rel=\"noopener\">alert ranchers<\/a> when cows are about to go into calf, and it allows farmers to produce crops indoors on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lXuQKoQCtOc\" rel=\"noopener\">vertical racks<\/a>.
