But, there\u2019s an aspect of being on call that is less talked about, but even more ubiquitous \u2013 the cognitive load. \u201cCognitive load\u201d has perhaps become a buzzword lately \u2013 it refers to how much we store in our \u201cworking memory,\u201d divided into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterclass.com\/articles\/ways-to-avoid-cognitive-overload#:~:text=Cognitive%20load%20theory%20divides%20a,extraneous%20load%2C%20and%20germane%20load.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">intrinsic, extraneous, and germane<\/a> cognitive load.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-127db65 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"127db65\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With regard to being on-call, a \u201cbackground worry\u201d (file under \u201cintrinsic load\u201d) is present when being on-call regardless of whether you get paged every night or have a completely uneventful shift. The more unpredictable and untrustworthy an on-call rotation is, the higher this worry is, and the higher chance for experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/incident-management\/on-call\/alert-fatigue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alert fatigue<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9b07c7f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9b07c7f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The cognitive burden of being on-call is different for everyone. Working parents need to juggle school and work schedules, heavy sleepers need to adjust (possibly by adjusting medications), and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neurodiversity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neurodiverse<\/a> folks may have a heightened sense of anxiety during an on-call period. Everyone starts with a different threshold for how much cognitive load they can take on, and being on-call affects everyone\u2019s mental well-being differently. For example, one person might not be at all bothered by the prospect of being woken up every night during their shift, whereas a different team member may be prone to illness if they are woken from a deep sleep even once in a week.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9de18cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9de18cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Furthermore, during their on-call shift, engineers are expected to make this a priority over other areas of their life. For example, going out to dinner means bringing a laptop with you and making sure you\u2019ll have Wi-Fi; being paged during a live event might require you to step away for a period of time and miss the action; and seeing a movie in a theatre is completely out.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-40d605d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"40d605d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Fortunately, there are ways to reduce or address the cognitive load of being on-call (even if it\u2019s still not a good idea to go to a movie theatre during your shift). This list is highly influenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=31EBLV_Bpwg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Liz Frost\u2019s DevOpsDays Boston 2016 talk on Oncall Equity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d70b1f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d70b1f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/bigdata-cloud\/to-provide-greater-business-value-it-needs-a-new-way-of-monitoring-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Implement monitoring and alerting you can trust<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8f4ac1e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8f4ac1e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Decreasing the cognitive load of being on-call starts first and foremost with trustworthy alerting. As mentioned, alert fatigue is a serious problem. It most commonly arises from inactionable alerts or repeat alerts for the same problem.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b2804e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b2804e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Prioritize alert management for your team. What tools they use shouldn\u2019t matter (and, in fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/architecture\/devops\/devops-tech-teams-empowered-to-choose-tools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">should be up to the team<\/a>), but alert management needs to be given serious consideration and revisited often in the spirit of continual improvement.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fac2cf9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fac2cf9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Assign a secondary on-call engineer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42be1c9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42be1c9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With management assigning a secondary on-call person to your rotation, it can signal to the primary on-call engineer that they\u2019re not the \u201clast line of defense\u201d and they don\u2019t have to know everything about everything. Of course, knowing a bit about all the company\u2019s systems or being able to understand with little context and\/or time is critical to being on-call, but the software is built and maintained by teams. Keep this team mentality through the on-call rotation.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-01c6676 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"01c6676\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Minimize context switching for the on-call engineer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac72934 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ac72934\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Being on-call is full of context switching by nature. An alert comes in and the on-call engineer needs to pivot from whatever they were doing to address it. Frequent interruptions can increase extraneous cognitive load.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d413598 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d413598\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Some teams minimize context switching for the on-call engineer by having them solely assigned to triage during their on-call shift. From the Atlassian post, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/incident-management\/on-call\/improving-on-call\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Manager\u2019s Guide To Improving On Call<\/a>:<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-36ac57b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"36ac57b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cThis is why, as a best practice, we recommend keeping on-call duties and development duties separate. When on-call employees have free time, they can work on improving on-call-related documentation and automation to eventually improve the sustainability of systems and services.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-65e31c9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"65e31c9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Make it frictionless to trade shifts and on-call responsibilities between team members.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a28820b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a28820b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This requires trust among team members and between team members and management, a solid foundational knowledge of the systems\/applications the team is responsible for across the team, and alerting software written for on-call teams (again, what software the team uses should be up to the team).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a296d5a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a296d5a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The ability to trade shifts can seriously decrease cognitive overload if team members know someone will be there to back them up if they need to step away for a personal emergency, or for something as routine as driving a child to school.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22831f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"22831f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Give a \u201crest\u201d day after an on-call shift.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-488d948 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"488d948\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Offer your engineers a rest day after their on-call shift, and make sure they take it at<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4198079 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4198079\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>least part of the time. This should be taken immediately so as to avoid engineers \u201cbanking\u201d comp days. The entire point of this day is to rest after an on-call shift in order to be refreshed.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e49cd41 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e49cd41\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>What a \u201crest day\u201d is could be different for different people (as the cognitive burden is different for everyone!), and it could vary depending on how active an on-call shift has been. A rest day might mean not coming into work or not signing online altogether, sometimes called a \u201ccomp day\u201d. Alternatively, this could be a day of \u201clight\u201d work (whatever that means to the engineer), or a shortened day. This could even be a day dedicated to work the engineer wants to do but has not been allotted the time for.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8fd85b5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8fd85b5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The on-call engineer has had to adjust their life outside of regular hours. The stress of being on-call makes work bleed into personal time, even if the engineer is never paged during their shift. It is only fair to give some personal time back.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e8fec62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e8fec62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Make being on-call a positive and rewarding experience.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-973b3cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"973b3cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dfKOiXh6Q50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">talks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/increment.com\/on-call\/crafting-sustainable-on-call-rotations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blog<\/a> posts on this already. One approach is making sure on-call is only a certain percentage of work. As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/software-ux-ui\/strategic-sre-assessments-accelerate-it-transformations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marc Hornbeek writes<\/a> regarding SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) transformations, \u201cSRE on-call work budgets are typically 25% or less. Developers share on-call work.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ea150a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3ea150a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Being on-call often means being exposed to broken processes and technical debt. On-call engineers often see this and have ideas to make these processes and systems better, but are not given the time in their work to do so. Combined with point 3 \u2013 minimize context switching for the on-call engineer \u2013 give the on-call engineer time to implement these fixes. This will, in fact, decrease the intrinsic cognitive loadburden of future on-call shifts, and make your engineers feel empowered.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bd414ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bd414ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Each of these six points could be blog posts in and of themselves, and a lot has been written on each of them. But, to sum it up: your on-call engineers keep your systems running and your business online. They are critical to your bottom line.
