The first is climate change, the second income inequality, and the third is this global pandemic brought on by the latest novel coronavirus. Each of these challenges are reshaping work in some way, but it is this third test, one that is freezing our economy and forcing job losses for many and job changes for all, that will require our response to all three. We will either emerge in a post pandemic world with clear answers to climate change, income inequality, and global health or we will find ourselves with greater inequality and declining collective health.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>My hope is the former, and to understand how we might emerge, it is helpful to understand how we arrived where we are and what this global pandemic may just change, for the better.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-327096a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"327096a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Income Inequality And The Employee\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b4f36f4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b4f36f4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In 2014, I wrote a series called\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/future-is-learning\/jobs-are-over-the-future-is-income-generation-part-1-a6bf560d4a27\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/future-is-learning\/jobs-are-over-the-future-is-income-generation-part-1-a6bf560d4a27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" label=\"Jobs Are Over: The Future Is Income Generation\" track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/medium.com\/future-is-learning\/jobs-are-over-the-future-is-income-generation-part-1-a6bf560d4a27\" class=\"broken_link\">Jobs Are Over: The Future Is Income Generation<\/a>\u00a0in which I suggested we start thinking more entrepreneurially about our ability to learn, adapt, and generate resources rather than simply codifying and transferring existing knowledge and predetermined skills in order to create a deployable workforce.\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/20140720200547-22726740-jobs-are-over-the-future-is-income-generation-part-4\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/20140720200547-22726740-jobs-are-over-the-future-is-income-generation-part-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" label=\"part four of that series\" track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/20140720200547-22726740-jobs-are-over-the-future-is-income-generation-part-4\/\" class=\"broken_link\">part four of that series<\/a>, I described how our current work structures, specifically the role of the employee with all requisite benefits, emerged from the\u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stabilization_Act_of_1942\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stabilization_Act_of_1942\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Stabilization Act of 1942\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stabilization_Act_of_1942\">Stabilization Act of 1942<\/a>\u00a0in which President Roosevelt, in effort to stave off inflation, fixed salaries and wages leaving employers to offer other benefits like health insurance and retirement to attract top talent. This worked well for a few decades when most of us enjoyed those employee benefits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3e822a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d3e822a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Then,\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Milton_Friedman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Milton_Friedman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Milton Friedman declared\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Milton_Friedman\">Milton Friedman declared<\/a><a title=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Milton_Friedman\" href=\"http:\/\/umich.edu\/~thecore\/doc\/Friedman.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" label=\"-\" track=\"ExternalLink:http:\/\/umich.edu\/~thecore\/doc\/Friedman.pdf\" class=\"broken_link\">&#8211;<\/a>\u00a0that the only social responsibility of a business is to return profits to shareholders, a declaration that fueled the\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/m\/merger-mania.asp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/m\/merger-mania.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" label=\"merger mania of the 1980s\" track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/m\/merger-mania.asp\" class=\"broken_link\">merger mania of the 1980s<\/a>. This period also marked the great decoupling of\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socioeconomic_mobility_in_the_United_States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socioeconomic_mobility_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"GDP per worker from median household income\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socioeconomic_mobility_in_the_United_States\">GDP per worker from median household income<\/a>, which simply means workers were increasingly productive yet did not share the gains proportionately. In the shadows of the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, enabled by tectonic shifts in technological capabilities, we saw\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.smallbizlabs.com\/2019\/03\/a-growing-number-of-freelancers-are-providing-professional-services-to-businesses.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smallbizlabs.com\/2019\/03\/a-growing-number-of-freelancers-are-providing-professional-services-to-businesses.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" label=\"the rise of the gig economy.\" track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.smallbizlabs.com\/2019\/03\/a-growing-number-of-freelancers-are-providing-professional-services-to-businesses.html\" class=\"broken_link\">the rise of the gig economy.<\/a>\u00a0The Friedman doctrine and merger mania together stripped benefits from employees while higher productivity and the availability of the gig economy reduced corporate employment across the board.\u00a0At the same time workers found<a title=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socioeconomic_mobility_in_the_United_States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socioeconomic_mobility_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"less social mobility\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socioeconomic_mobility_in_the_United_States\">\u00a0less social mobility<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/12\/13\/cost-of-college-increased-by-more-than-25percent-in-the-last-10-years.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/12\/13\/cost-of-college-increased-by-more-than-25percent-in-the-last-10-years.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"higher education cost skyrocketed\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/12\/13\/cost-of-college-increased-by-more-than-25percent-in-the-last-10-years.html\">higher education cost skyrocketed<\/a>, placing a debt burden on a new generation of workers. What does this mean and why should you care, especially if you are in the minority enjoying greater gains? Even if you are not motivated by your fellow Americans\u2019 well-being, you might want to think more long term about your own, and perhaps more acutely, your children\u2019s futures. Yet, our response, ultimately, was to put our elderly, those with underlying health conditions, our healthcare workers, and our healthcare system itself before our economy. We made the right decision. We put people before profit, and in doing so, we are beginning to clearly see the inextricable link between the two. Freezing economies around the world is a very difficult decision because, even with massive government financial support, doing so puts very real hardship, and in some cases unrecoverable damage on our society. For example, when unemployment\u00a0goes up\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1448606\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1448606\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"so do rate of suicide and premature death\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1448606\/\">so do rate of suicide and premature death<\/a>. As hard as this is to face, this may have been not only the right decision to protect our most vulnerable and also our healthcare system, but also for our economy long term.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Fascinating\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/04\/pandemic-economy-lessons-1918-flu\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/04\/pandemic-economy-lessons-1918-flu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" label=\"research by the World Economic Forum\" track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/04\/pandemic-economy-lessons-1918-flu\/\" class=\"broken_link\">research by the World Economic Forum<\/a>\u00a0examined the 1918 global flu pandemic and found that non pharmaceutical interventions (NPI) such the physical distancing limited spikes in infections and better protected our healthcare workers and healthcare system, ultimately avoiding even more massive casualties. This information is not surprising and it\u2019s why we are all practicing physical distancing now. As importantly, the WEF research found, cities that enforced NPI early and aggressively saw no adverse economic effects over the medium term and an increase in real economic activity when the virus subsided. Our mindset and outlook has been me instead of we. We have seen the world as a zero sum game rather than an investment in collective return. As suddenly as we saw companies shift to work from home and educational institutions leap to online,\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2020-04-10\/coronavirus-lasting-changes-healthcare\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2020-04-10\/coronavirus-lasting-changes-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"we see our healthcare systems adapt\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2020-04-10\/coronavirus-lasting-changes-healthcare\">we see our healthcare systems adapt<\/a>\u00a0to expand access via widespread adoption of telehealth and lump sum vs. fee-for-service models of physician pay.\u00a0\u00a0The latter model places incentive on office visits and sick care, where the former favors better health outcomes. Our healthcare system is adapting as is our perception of what is in our own best interest. Will all these advances retreat with the virus?
