Those who can continue their work from home are experimenting and learning-by-doing to work in new ways. Organizations are adapting quickly to the new normal, and they are seeing their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/the-new-elevated-workforce-of-remote-workers-experts-give-advice-for-wfh-teams-and-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">workforce <\/a>pivoting to work productively from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5b65\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kinresearch.nl\/person\/marleen-huysman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Marleen Huysman<\/a>, head of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kinresearch.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">KIN Center for Digital Innovation<\/a>, shares her thoughts on how the COVID-19 pandemic may broadly shape the future of work.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b47f6f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2b47f6f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2 id=\"8683\">1. The culture of control will decrease<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading --><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c8d2b7d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c8d2b7d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p id=\"b8a6\">Companies and management are now living out their fear of \u201closing control\u201d of their workforce when they let employees work remotely. Remote work is gaining acceptance as management \u201csees\u201d that their workforce can be productive despite the fact that they are not physically in the office or meeting face to face.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6e7a395 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"6e7a395\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1564\/1*CyotcG7X_Njw8Bs5a6oU-Q.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8d71116 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8d71116\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 id=\"3337\">2. We will have fewer, shorter, and less in-person meetings<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading --><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-54e1e0c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"54e1e0c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p id=\"43c5\">In many organizations, there\u2019s a culture of in-person meetings that aren\u2019t necessarily effective or needed. As employees demonstrate their autonomy, the need for meetings, and especially in-person meetings will be called into question. Employees will challenge requests to travel far and wide, and companies that embrace working from home will be seen as more attractive employers. As a result, there will be a positive impact on the environment, as well as on employees\u2019 stress levels and mental health.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:quote -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p id=\"aae3\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>\u201cWe see many organizations rapidly digitalizing, using all kinds of video conferencing services and online communication platforms, and we can expect to see more examples of simulation technologies, e.g. games and hybrid reality used to enhance the experience of working together, though we are physically at home. Fortunately, we are relatively well prepared; most people are already online. Imagine this would have happened 20 years ago.\u201d \u2014 Marleen Huysman<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:quote -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-064f3fb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"064f3fb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2 id=\"58b3\">3. Physical space will be utilized in new ways<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading --><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-734d444 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"734d444\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p id=\"fb19\">If working from home becomes the new normal, working at the office will become a deliberate choice. People may start meeting in homes to work together; we observed this behavior when studying a large multinational that had closed their Dutch office for a few months. The need for office space will be drastically reduced and organizations will use this to their economic advantage, e.g. split up the use of the office space per team or department to meet in person only on specific workdays (something we have been experimenting with at KIN). Additionally, the full open office plan may disappear to prevent the spread of pathogens.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:quote -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p id=\"89ae\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>\u201cAt\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kinresearch.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\"><em>KIN Center for Digital Innovation<\/em><\/a><em>, we have always been frontrunners in the future of work. We\u2019ve been using laptops, collaborating via Slack, video calling into sessions we cannot join and sharing files over the cloud for a long time. Only on Tuesdays and Fridays, is it semi-mandatory to gather at the Vrije Universiteit to see each other in person.\u201d \u2014 Marleen Huysman<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:quote -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e3a5612 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e3a5612\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2 id=\"f3d8\">4. Many jobs will face redundancy<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading --><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48fb9bb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"48fb9bb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p id=\"20c2\">Besides the jobs that will be lost due to the related economic crisis, COVID-19 will expose the fact that not all jobs are really needed. Many managers will become redundant as employees demonstrate their ability to work autonomously because there will be less need to control the workforce.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef1d828 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ef1d828\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 id=\"fe60\">5. People will have to find their own rhythms<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading --><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6241dd8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6241dd8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p id=\"34f1\">Adapting to the mix of work and home life in the same space means that employees will have to find what works for themselves, both in their spare time as well as in their jobs. Now that the 9 to 5 routine has been interrupted, working around personal rhythms can help employees become more effective. This will, in turn, complicate a return to the full \u201cworking from the office\u201d mode of working.
