In a matter of weeks, we have seen working from home skyrocket to\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/03\/coronavirus-creating-huge-stressful-experiment-working-home\/607945\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/03\/coronavirus-creating-huge-stressful-experiment-working-home\/607945\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"nearly 30% of Americans\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/03\/coronavirus-creating-huge-stressful-experiment-working-home\/607945\/\">nearly 30% of Americans<\/a>. Public transportation and traffic in major cities decreased dramatically as offices, factories and schools have shut down. In Europe and China, satellite images are showing lower levels of pollution as a result. If we wanted an experiment to see what the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/some-brutal-realities-about-the-future-of-work\/\">future of work<\/a> would look like in a truly digital world, this is it.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a348a6d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a348a6d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMany of us have logged into Zoom (<a title=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/market-activity\/stocks\/zm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/market-activity\/stocks\/zm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"NASDAQ\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/market-activity\/stocks\/zm\">NASDAQ\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/companies\/nasdaq\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" label=\"ticker:NDAQ\" track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/companies\/nasdaq\" class=\"broken_link\">NDAQ<\/a>:ZM) and Slack (<a title=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/WORK\/\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/WORK\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"NYSE:WORK\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/WORK\/\">NYSE:WORK<\/a>) and adapted to our home and work lives coming into greater contact with one another. But as we look further out \u2013 to the point when the immediate crisis subsides and we see the long lasting effects on our lives \u2013 what could this mean for how our society functions? And how might our living and work environment evolve as a result?\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51413fc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"51413fc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>The Internet-based Society (Almost)<\/strong><\/h3><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-345e838 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"345e838\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFive years ago, remote working on this scale across multiple industries would have seemed unfeasible. That signifies the huge shift that has taken place, both in terms of technology (cloud technology, apps, remote working tools), but also infrastructure, including faster wi-fi and phone data.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-82533bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"82533bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tInternet providers currently appear to be coping with the increased and shifting demand as people work from home. However, the roll-out of 5G has arguably become even more paramount for these companies; it will increase connectivity, particularly in remote or underserved regions, and provide the necessary infrastructure for the Internet of Things in a more decentralized society.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-75cb8b8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"75cb8b8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nEven once the immediate crisis subsides, it seems likely that there will be a lasting impact on work habits. More people will feel that they can be successful working from home and may negotiate for it as a benefit with their employers (particularly if wages stagnate in a recession). Employers, for their part, will realize that cutting costs on office space outweighs any challenges to productivity. That may sustain an increase in remote working tools, such as Zoom and Slack, although no doubt there will still be a return to old working practices in many companies who don\u2019t have the option to work remotely.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-724c410 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"724c410\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhat is clear is that we will need flexibility in our technology and infrastructure to cope with the change in demand from diverging work practices between remote workers and commuters. That will likely bring new innovations and solutions across commercial real estate, education, information technology, HR, telecommunication and energy.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ece137d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ece137d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>A Step-Change in Smart Cities<\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-28b4476 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"28b4476\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIf more activities need to be done remotely, then we can expect to see greater demand for smart city infrastructure.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9866bcb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9866bcb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nSocial monitoring technologies, including cameras, drones and security systems, will become more pervasive. Both as footfall decreases in certain areas, it will create more security risks for businesses who want to protect their premises. We may also see authorities use this technology in future health emergencies. In the U.K., local police have already been\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DerbysPolice\/status\/1243168931503882241\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DerbysPolice\/status\/1243168931503882241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"using drones to enforce social distancing\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/twitter.com\/DerbysPolice\/status\/1243168931503882241\">using drones to enforce social distancing<\/a>. Both during health emergencies, but also in extreme weather events, which are likely to become more common. Rather than having to go on-site to check an out-of-service telecom pole, for instance, a worker will be able to check what the issue is from their smartphone \u2013 and possibly even fix it remotely.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9cc337a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9cc337a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>A Shift To Cleaner Transport<\/strong><\/h3><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6020811 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6020811\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWith fewer people commuting to work or visiting urban areas for shopping, restaurants and leisure, as some of these services switch to online or delivery, we may see a permanent shift in demand for transport.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f4864a1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f4864a1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIf vehicle traffic is reduced in city centers, that will leave more room for green highways: cycle paths and pedestrian routes that will enable people to move around the city and get exercise, while still maintaining a reasonable distance from each other. For municipalities and governments, that will affect urban planning, including changing road layouts, widening sidewalks, providing more alternative transport options in collaboration with private companies (e-bikes and e-scooters), and improving street lighting.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1f2f1d1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1f2f1d1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tProviders of mass transit \u2013 train and subway companies in particular \u2013 may be expected to reduce overcrowding and create more distance between passengers, although it is hard to see how these measures will be effectively implemented.
