We shall focus here on methodologies that are trying to operationalize and realize the most important potential of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/cognitiveworld\/2018\/09\/04\/digital-transformation-debt-part-i\/#1da92d722e8d\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Transformation<\/a>\u00a0(DX):\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pega.com\/products\/pega-platform\/intelligent-automation\" rel=\"noopener\">Intelligent Automation<\/a>\u00a0(IA). We will abbreviate it as DX IA. IA is achieved through Digital\u00a0<em>Process\u00a0<\/em>Automation.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-06919a8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"06919a8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe four methodologies discussed in this article are quite complementary. There are commonalities, but they do require different skills. They all should be part and parcel of the overall meta-iterations within a concerted digital transformation effort.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7cd353f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7cd353f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe four methodologies are:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Design Thinking Methodology<\/li>\n \t<li>Agile Delivery Methodology (Scrum or otherwise)<\/li>\n \t<li>DevOps Methodology<\/li>\n \t<li>Continuous Improvement Methodology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab82c68 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab82c68\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEach of these DX IA methodologies manifests itself in specific phases and iterations of continuous innovation. They are all\u00a0<em>iterative\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>continuous\u00a0<\/em>at their core. Different digital technology tools and capabilities come into play while implementing these methodologies. However, the context of IA is at its core Digital\u00a0<em>Process\u00a0<\/em>Automation. Whether we are building, operationalizing, or improving enterprise applications at the end of the day,\u00a0<em>work<\/em>\u00a0is being automated, and work always pertains to a process.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c66c7e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c66c7e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3>Intelligent Digital Process Automation<\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd462f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dd462f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe following illustrates the evolution of IA from traditional and legacy applications, organizations, and structures. The\u00a0<em>transformation\u00a0<\/em>is now realized through the speed of digitization and automation of end-to-end value streams \u2013 through DPA.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42da592 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42da592\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<em>The richness of the digital technologies and the empowerment emanating from Low Code\/No Code development accentuates the importance of methodologies and best practices.<\/em>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7330689 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7330689\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe four methodologies described here are not orthogonal. They are interdependent with continuous feedback. Design Thinking is not a one-and-done methodology. Sometimes organizations have a workshop for Design Thinking, and that becomes the end of it. The Prioritization balances ease of implementation with business value:\n<ul>\n \t<li><em>Business Value:\u00a0<\/em>How important is the innovation project to the business stakeholders? Some KPI\u2019s (Key Performance Indicators) include increased revenue, operational excellence for cost reduction, regulatory compliance, and customer experience optimization.<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Ease and Complexity:\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Every DPA innovation project candidate will require integration with systems of record or other emerging technologies such as IoT or Blockchain. There are also other considerations, such as UX design, scalability, security, and privacy requirements. Each of these factors impacts the overall complexity of the implementation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5875103 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5875103\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3>Agile Methodology DX Solutions<\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f568401 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f568401\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe second iteration is, in some ways, the core innovative application development or delivery methodology. Ideally, business,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pega.com\/insights\/resources\/intelligent-bpm-ibpm-next-wave-automation\" rel=\"noopener\">IT, and Operations stakeholders collaborate<\/a>\u00a0leveraging the various capabilities of the DPA platform and continuously iterating for multiple releases. The DPA platform supports the iterations as you are building the DPA solution. Each of these iterations is mapped onto DPA elements, such as business rules for risk, approval cases, integration, UI, and other implementation assets. Ideally, the Scrum team includes members from business, IT, and operations. With agile iterations in each sprint or even daily Scrum, the stakeholders \u2013 especially the business \u2013 have direct visibility and access to the solution that is being built.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b237369 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b237369\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3>DevOps Methodology<\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3a5fee1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3a5fee1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cDevOps\u201d stands for\u00a0<em>Dev<\/em>elopment and\u00a0<em>Op<\/em>eration<em>s<\/em>. The main business goal of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/community.pega.com\/knowledgebase\/capabilities\/devops\" rel=\"noopener\">DevOps methodology<\/a>\u00a0is rapid, high-quality, and continuous iterations towards deployment. The output of an Agile Scrum methodology (Development) needs to be \u201chardened\u201d for production and deployed for customers with high quality in all areas \u2013 including security, reliability, and performance. With conventional and manual approaches, the \u201chardening\u201d could take weeks or even months, thus reducing the impact of the innovation for the end customer. This clearly illustrates the importance of all phases of the methodologies to be aligned in speed and efficiencies.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e61f2ad elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e61f2ad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDevOps techniques and methodologies increase the frequency of deployment of solutions or services. \u00a0DevOps is really an extension of the Agile methodology that increases the collaboration between the development and operation teams. There are several tools that are leveraged in DevOps, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jenkins.io\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Jenkins<\/a>\u00a0for Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery. The \u201cintegration\u201d here pertains to the incremental code or solution changes that are integrated to a shared repository. These need to go through various types of testing, especially unit testing. In the \u201cdelivery\u201d stage, the objective is to accelerate moving and productizing the application or development changes to production deployment, without sacrificing quality. The prioritization in Design Thinking identifies a backlog of Quick Wins. The most important dimension in identifying Quick Wins is the business value. Of all the four methodologies, it is the one that often gets the least attention. Ignoring any aspect of these methodologies adversely impacts Digital Transformation.<\/em>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-576f7e7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"576f7e7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThese methodologies are not orthogonal or separated. Agile and DevOps are being coalesced and integrated. Operational Excellence disciplines \u2013 especially with Real-Time Lean Six Sigma measures and techniques need to also be assimilated in the DNA of DX practices. Design Thinking drives the dynamic backlog, and it too should be part of the overall meta-methodology\u00a0 \u2013 not a sperate or one-and-done workshop (which is often the case).
