Nascent evidence for Covid-19\u2019s effects on working lives suggests that organizational\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1037\/apl0000860\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leaders\u2019 commitment to physical safety<\/a>\u00a0of employees is emerging as a new necessary condition for job engagement and task performance for those who are physically returning to work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c1adbfa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c1adbfa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Bear in mind that workers everywhere have operated remotely for more than one year, ever since Covid-19 restrictions were established. And while this period has undoubtedly improved business efficiency, well-being is suffering; 94<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stress.org\/42-worrying-workplace-stress-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">%<\/a>\u00a0of workers are stressed. While this isn\u2019t surprising &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oracle.com\/human-capital-management\/ai-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oracle<\/a>\u00a0concluded 2020 was the most stressful year ever &#8211; people are now at breaking point. Some 78% believe the coronavirus pandemic has severely affected their mental health; 40% are making more flawed decisions, and 90% conclude that newfound work-related stress affects their home lives. The culmination of which is causing unprecedented levels of depression (up 53%), anxiety (up 55%), and even PTSD (up 32%), which is further exacerbated by a growing backlash against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sloanreview.mit.edu\/article\/how-to-monitor-remote-workers-ethically\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employee surveillance<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-943cf44 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"943cf44\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Recent evidence also suggests that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/iot\/connected-finances-part-2-when-the-internet-of-things-secures-your-finances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">financial<\/a> &#8211; and job security are emerging as key predictors of employees\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1037\/apl0000797\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enactment of Covid-19 safety behaviors<\/a>\u00a0in the workplace. Importantly, in addition to physical safety, Kudret also highlights the importance of mental safety. Recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1037\/apl0000739\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evidence<\/a>\u00a0shows that Covid-19-related health anxiety negatively impacts employees\u2019 goal progress at work, family engagement, and somatic health. With significant work and health outcomes at stake, Kudret recommends that employers tread with caution regarding summoning employees to their pre-pandemic workplaces. Another interesting finding relates to personal care spending, which is up 16%. Additionally, spending on apparel is up 14%, suggesting increased social activity and events as states emerge from lockdown situations. In addition, the significant changes in workplace, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sloanreview.mit.edu\/article\/how-to-develop-early-career-talent-virtually\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remote working<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; and practices associated with it &#8211; are assumed by most to be permanent. The reason being, they are, on the most part, positive &#8211; such as saving on commute time, which was cited most (28%), followed closely by more comfortable space at home (24%) and better work-life balance (24%).<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5a79b7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c5a79b7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These findings are certainly compelling, given that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/02\/business\/economy\/jobs-report-march.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">projections<\/a>\u00a0forecast an imminent expansion of that the American economy &#8211; the largest annual growth rate since 1984. According to KPMG\u2019s Advisory Industry Leader, Consumer &amp; Retail\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/home.kpmg\/xx\/en\/home\/contacts\/r\/scott-rankin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scott Rankin<\/a>, \u201cit\u2019s encouraging to see that spending is rebounding across retail categories. There is much to be optimistic about as more and more people are vaccinated.
