It can\u2019t be pronounced unless you say \u201ceeyot,\u201d which sounds like a drunken insult you toss at a buddy, and spelled out, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/topic\/internet-of-things\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Internet of Things<\/a>\u201d doesn\u2019t really have any meaning. What things? And what\u2019s \u201cInternet\u201d about them?\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6858c50 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6858c50\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFortunately, there\u2019s a growing movement to change the definition of the tech term, to give it more meaning and set us up for the next decade of innovation. Tomorrow, IoT will mean Intelligence of Things. Here\u2019s what that shift will bring \u2013 and how everything\u2019s going to change in the decade ahead.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3074690 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3074690\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>Put a sensor on it<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-be13c1c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"be13c1c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cImagine my surprise when I entered a restroom in a small [Ethiopian] town outside of Addis Ababa, the capital, and found urinals with sensors \u2013 the kind that know when you\u2019re, um, finished,\u201d wrote the well-regarded technologist Shawn Dubravac, describing a 2013 trip in his excellent book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Digital-Destiny-Data-Transform-Communicate\/dp\/1621573737\/?tag=digitren08-20&amp;ascsubtag=1582527171664ynlk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-cc-tracker-processed=\"1\" data-cloudcity-network=\"amazon\" data-cloudcity-rendered=\"\" data-deeplink=\"1\">Digital Destiny<\/a>\u00a0. \u201cIn Ethiopia, where indoor plumbing is considered a luxury and a lot of folks live on less than a dollar a day, self-flushing urinals catch your attention.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bd98ae6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bd98ae6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nBut it wasn\u2019t the toilets themselves that caught Dubravac\u2019s eye: Instead, he noted that sensors had gotten so dirt cheap that there was no penalty for adding them. Why not put them in everything? Extrapolate that to the world at large and you\u2019ve got phase one of the Internet of Things, where sensors and network connectivity chips are added at very little cost to ordinary devices like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/smart-home-reviews\/canary-flex-review\/\" rel=\"noopener\">security cameras<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/smart-home-reviews\/irobot-roomba-s9-plus-review\/\" rel=\"noopener\">vacuum cleaners<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/smart-home-reviews\/schlage-encode-review\/\" rel=\"noopener\">door locks<\/a>.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-de4cabb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"de4cabb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">\u201cWithout intelligence, there is no value.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c659e54 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c659e54\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs many as 100 billion of these devices will go online by 2025, which will lead to meaningful products for consumers, for sure \u2014 but it\u2019s hardly realizing the dream of IoT. Video doorbells, connected sprinkler systems, smart toaster ovens \u2014 the Internet can let us access them remotely and do more with them. They\u2019re fundamentally better than they used to be. But the innovation hardly stops there.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-050d583 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"050d583\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>When things get intelligent<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b0994ae elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b0994ae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIntelligence of things looks less like the restroom in Ethiopia, and more like Hartsfield-Jackson\u00a0 Atlanta International Airport, where the world\u2019s largest toilet maker, Toto, has taken things a step further. There, too, the bathrooms are studded with sensors, from the urinals to the faucets. But they don\u2019t just flush automatically, they all\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/ces-2019-how-toto-is-making-restrooms-smarter\/\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"noopener\">report back to central cloud database<\/a>. The volume of data is astounding \u2013 a single toilet may flush 5,000 times per day. In aggregate, the airport can use this data to predict \u201crush hour\u201d for the airport bathrooms, and deploy custodians before and after to make sure the toilets are clean, the paper towels are stocked, and everything\u2019s running smoothly.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1514e34 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1514e34\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cThe last decade was about connectivity, and we describe that dynamic with the Internet of Things,\u201d Steve Koenig, vice president of research at the Consumer Technology Association, told Digital Trends. \u201cThis decade is really about adding intelligence to different devices, services, etc. We\u2019re confronted with a new IoT: The intelligence of things.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24c8430 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"24c8430\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn other words, the next decade is about doing more with those devices by tapping into the vast river of data pouring off of them, and leveraging artificial intelligence to let our things do stuff for themselves.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-418a4ae elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"418a4ae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tConsider the ideal vision of the networked smart home: Your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/smart-home-reviews\/nest-protect-review\/\" rel=\"noopener\">connected smoke alarm<\/a>\u00a0sniffs the air and detects not just the lingering aroma of bacon but a hint of fire. Rather than just blaring a senseless klaxon to startle whoever\u2019s within earshot, it turns off the oven and furnace, shuts power to the room, and calls the fire department. Networking devices together unlocks their power. We don\u2019t want notifications; we want solutions to problems. It takes intelligence to get there, not just connectivity.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1821ecf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1821ecf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cWithout intelligence, there is no value,\u201d Kiva Allgood, head of IoT and automotive at Ericsson, told Digital Trends. \u201cI actually view this as a mistake in the space, we have generalized all \u2018things\u2019 without focusing on what really matters: The outcome or value to the enterprise or the individual when they digitally transform.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-30d520d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"30d520d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Connected devices are already changing how we think and act.<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ffb566 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1ffb566\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThat attitude is fading. Connected devices are already changing how we think and act. It\u2019s especially noticeable as smart assistants and A.I. take on tasks big and small for us. Call them microtasks: Things like taking inventory in the fridge, turning on the radio or lights, reminding us that the dryer is done.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4fcba4c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4fcba4c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\u201cThe new solutions hitting the market now go beyond yes and no, or open and closed,\u201d Allgood explains. \u201cLet\u2019s take an everyday example. Your commute. Today, you can find where the bus is, what the estimated time of arrival might be, and what the past occupancy has been. Leveraging additional data, machine learning, and basic occupancy data, we can now see exactly how many seats are available, and if there\u2019s room for your bike, ultimately saving you a wasted trip to the bus stop.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-29a1ccf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"29a1ccf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>Putting true smarts in smart homes<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4743724 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4743724\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAt CES 2020, we saw an array of heretofore unconnected devices added to the IoT world, including connected and intelligent kitchen and bath fixtures like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smarthome.kohler.com\/smart-kitchen-faucets-sensate\" rel=\"noopener\">Kohler\u2019s Sensate<\/a>, a voice-activated faucet that can dispense precise amounts of liquid on command. In their commercials, you can simply speak a command and have your house react, either by locking the door behind you and arming an alarm when you leave or flashing the lights in the living room to let you know the dryer is done. We aren\u2019t there today, despite these commercials, but by getting the final components of the home online, we\u2019re moving toward that world.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fd2579e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fd2579e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s next for the smart home? The bones of the home will have embedded sensors in the roof, Koenig speculated, providing value for risk mitigation and insurance companies. Maybe in the future, you won\u2019t have to have a roofing guy come out after a storm to assess damage \u2014 the roof might just report where it\u2019s damaged.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7e58b9f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7e58b9f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>Making sense of it all<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67934dc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"67934dc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2020 will bring the first big advancements in what I call phase 3 of the IoT transformation: Using A.I. to process the unfathomably large amounts of data streaming out of these networked devices and leveraging it in meaningful ways.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed112de elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ed112de\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tConsider the progress we\u2019ve made from the days of paper maps, which never really fit back in the glove box anyway. Moving maps to our phones and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/cars\/best-gps-for-your-car\/\" rel=\"noopener\">GPS devices<\/a>\u00a0was a good start, but it\u2019s only by networking multiple phones together that the real power of mapping is unlocked. Using millions of cellphones, Waze and other mapping apps can identify speed traps and accidents, reroute us around slow spots, and generally make maps work better.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-14a48f3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"14a48f3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBetter maps are great, but smarter highways are better still. When city planners and even the federal government start to apply data analysis to all of that information, amazing things can happen. We can predict crashes by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/office-policy\/transportation-policy\/sdi-waze-project-summary-documents\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"noopener\">combining crowdsourced crash data<\/a>\u00a0from Waze with state data sets. Or better understand the connection between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/sites\/dot.gov\/files\/docs\/mission\/office-policy\/transportation-policy\/313961\/rural-speed-pilot-project-061418.pdf\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"noopener\">speed limits and crash outcomes<\/a>, thanks to anonymized data from GPS-enabled devices.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eb7f322 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eb7f322\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMore to the point, IoT might help prevent future outbreaks of disease: Imagine a global network of sensors and systems that provide an early warning system when infectious diseases threaten to become pandemics. Building one would be an enormous undertaking for governments around the world, but the potential is unquestionable, wrote Dilip Sarangan, global research director for the Internet of Things at Frost &amp; Sullivan, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.frost.com\/frost-perspectives\/the-next-generation-of-iot-addressing-the-coronavirus-and-preventing-future-outbreaks\/\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"noopener\">a recent blog post<\/a>.
