But is the distribution of a workforce the same as operating as a fully distributed company?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>As a remote work thought leader who has been building and operating officeless companies for almost a decade and a half, I can confidently answer that it is not. Asking a workforce to start working from home offices is a workplace transformation, but not virtual organizational development. In other words, it is only&nbsp;<em>allowing&nbsp;<\/em>remote work, not&nbsp;<em>adopting&nbsp;<\/em>it.<\/p>\n\n<p>The difference between allowing and adopting remote work lies in the company\u2019s consideration of the ripple effects of workplace transformation, such as protocols, policies, and tools. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1fb813a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1fb813a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">This more sustainable development requires a comprehensive change management process that encompasses these six categories:<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8c33765 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8c33765\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Workforce -<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ae7ac91 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ae7ac91\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Virtual collaboration requires a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/laurelfarrer\/2020\/03\/19\/academic-research-proves-8-skills-critical-to-work-from-home-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">different skillset<\/a>\u00a0than in-office work, yet many employers are expecting the same output and performance from their teams as they did when they were co-located. To successfully nurture the sustainable autonomy that remote work requires, companies need to support their teams through the transition from working together in proximity, to working together in the cloud. This includes updates and adaptations to all elements of the employment lifecycle, including talent acquisition, onboarding, offboarding, learning and development, sponsorship, performance analysis, and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-496f407 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"496f407\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Management\u00a0 -<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6bff4af elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6bff4af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Without the ability to physically supervise, many managers are worried about how to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/laurelfarrer\/2020\/05\/26\/are-your-remote-workers-staying-productive\/?sh=3ebfa2614fb8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">measure the productivity<\/a>\u00a0of their workforces. In a virtual work environment, monitoring the wellness, output, and engagement is still possible, but requires different tools, habits, and training. Otherwise, leadership can easily fall into traps like micromanagement, unethical monitoring, discrimination, or isolation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad5b83d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ad5b83d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Culture\u00a0-<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5e133f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b5e133f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Many companies believe that culture development is on hiatus while teams aren\u2019t able to interact with each other in an office. However, it\u2019s important to remember that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/laurelfarrer\/2020\/06\/11\/workplace-culture-without-an-office-is-it-possible\/?sh=259e2dc54013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proximity doesn\u2019t ensure connection<\/a>, so leadership must intentionally design channels, activities, and engagement expectations that will help unify their teams and create a sense of belonging. If unprepared for the transition to a distributed work environment or neglected while working remotely, workers often succumb to common work-from-home risks such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/laurelfarrer\/2019\/02\/15\/beware-professional-isolation-is-more-than-loneliness\/?sh=701bd722723a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">isolation<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/laurelfarrer\/2020\/05\/29\/the-dangerous-reality-of-wfh-burnout-and-how-to-treat-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">burnout<\/a>, which inhibits productivity and retention.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-61a15d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"61a15d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Workplace\u00a0 -<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-58d8b0a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"58d8b0a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For the past 50 years, occupational health and safety regulations have reduced workplace-related injuries and deaths by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/data\/commonstats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly 75%<\/a>\u00a0due to the strict enforcement of environmental standards. However, those criteria are currently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/enforcement\/directives\/cpl-02-00-125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not legally enforced<\/a>\u00a0in home offices, which increases risk of danger for professionals and liability for employers. It is essential that employers collaborate with employees to ensure their home office conditions have adequate features to support sustainable health and productivity, such as natural light, compatible equipment, ergonomic seating, and a hazard-free workspace.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f288ffa elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f288ffa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Infrastructure\u00a0 -<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-153618c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"153618c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Sure, your remote team is using some communication tools to replace in-office conversations, but are you using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/laurelfarrer\/2020\/06\/26\/the-7-tools-that-every-remote-team-needs\/?sh=1b1631f131cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the right tools<\/a>? By asking employees to agree to certain performance expectations, accessibility terms, qualifications, and working conditions, employers will reduce the risk of future lawsuits and minimize unnecessary costs. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>So, yes, you may be working remotely, but are you thriving as a distributed team and a remote-first organization? Probably not.
