As an example, a recent study by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/global-themes\/future-of-organizations-and-work\/what-the-future-of-work-will-mean-for-jobs-skills-and-wages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">McKinsey\u00a0<\/a>indicated automation threatens 800 million jobs and a 1\/3rd of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/global-themes\/future-of-organizations-and-work\/what-the-future-of-work-will-mean-for-jobs-skills-and-wages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">workers in the US and Germany<\/a>\u00a0need to learn new skills by 2030. There are similar studies from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/towards-a-reskilling-revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">World Economic Forum<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 also emphasizing reskilling &#8211; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2017\/11\/29\/automation-could-kill-73-million-u-s-jobs-2030\/899878001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">others<\/a>.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd49563 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dd49563\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nThese are interesting. There are helpful observations, cautions as well as recommendations to be prepared in different industries as well as regions. But often these types of surveys and predictions are na\u00efve and simplistic in the characterization of work as well as categories of workers: be they white or blue collar. The spectrum of digital transformation as well as cultural transformations are often ignored.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-519c445 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"519c445\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>Robots and Robotic Automation<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d96b3ca elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d96b3ca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn various industries or even in our homes or offices,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/robotglobe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">robots\u00a0<\/a>come in all shapes and sizes, from heavy robotic arms on a shop floor to greeting robots in retail stores, restaurants, or hotels.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ed2dba elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5ed2dba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRobots are also appearing through\u00a0<em>systems\u00a0<\/em>of connected and increasingly intelligent devices. For instance a self-driving connected vehicle is a robot: but it involves multiple smaller robots or intelligent connect sensors and actuators. This aggregate of devices, smaller robots, and intelligent sensors need to all\u00a0<em>orchestrate\u00a0<\/em>and collaborate to achieve the objectives of the larger aggregate robot: the connected vehicle. In fact we can extrapolate from this to other even larger robots: such as a manufacturing shop floor, an intelligent building, or a connected city.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-06a63b4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"06a63b4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMore interestingly, we can also have\u00a0<em>software\u00a0<\/em>robots. Repetitive tasks on, say, desktops can be automated through robotic software \u2013 saving considerable amount of time and avoiding potential human errors. Thus the era of\u00a0<em>robotics \u00ad<\/em>\u2013 be they physical robots or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pega.com\/products\/pega-7-platform\/robotic-automation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>robotic automation<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>in software is making a huge impact on process efficiency. Thus instead of humans copying information between various screens, or traversing a plethora of legacy applications a software robot instead automatically achieves the same repetitive tasks: much faster and with fewer errors.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-db77f07 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"db77f07\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nThis brings us to the crux of Work automation \u2013 viewing it as a spectrum of work types and a spectrum of worker categories.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2699495 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2699495\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6d6444d\" data-id=\"6d6444d\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3eff41b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3eff41b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\n<h2><strong>Work Types and Worker Categories<\/strong><\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a25ae02 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a25ae02\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhen it comes to Automation, there is a spectrum of work and worker categories.\n<ul>\n \t<li><em>Repetitive Work Automated through Robots and Robotic Automation<\/em>: increasingly robots are replacing routine predictable and repetitive\u00a0<em>manual<\/em>\u00a0work. This is sometimes characterized as the \u201clong tail\u201d of tasks that are allocated to relatively low paying repetitive jobs that are managed by the business vs. IT. These can now be automated with robots. These include actual\u00a0<em>physical<\/em>\u00a0robots that can, for instance, manage a warehouse moving boxes around or clean the floor in large plants and of course you have extensive robotics in Manufacturing.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/transforming-customer-relationship-culture-setrag-khoshafian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smart Manufacturing<\/a>\u00a0(aka\u00a0<em>Industrie 4.0)\u00a0<\/em>especially due to Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has given rise to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.pega.com\/insights\/resources\/adaptive-digital-factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Adaptive Digital Factory<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em>\u00a0That is the industrial Operational Technology (OT) side. On the Information Technology (IT) side we are seeing increasingly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/ai-ml\/why-robotic-process-automation-can-boost-morale\/\">robotic process automation\u00a0<\/a>solutions leveraged successfully in customer relationship as well as back-office operations. It is truly a pragmatic approach for automating work \u2013 especially in organizations that have many legacy systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-40876a4 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"40876a4\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-54fc3b3\" data-id=\"54fc3b3\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17fd806 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"17fd806\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n \t<li><em>AI Assisted Work:\u00a0<\/em>Now for more mission critical and higher business value (and typically higher transaction volume) tasks, you have AI-assisted workers that are guided by increasingly intelligent software that leverages business rules, analytics, and machine learning. It is similar to having an intelligent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/10\/08\/comparing-alexa-google-assistant-cortana-and-siri-smart-speakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Siri or Alexa<\/a>\u00a0helping the worker complete their tasks. Increasingly workers are assisted by bot and Intelligent Virtual Assistants with increasingly sophisticated Natural Language Processing capabilities combined with\u00a0<em>knowledge\u00a0<\/em>that is contextual for the task or interaction at hand. The intelligent system now provides the contextual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.pega.com\/insights\/resources\/build-change-next-best-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Next-Best-Action<\/a>\u00a0(NBA) to the AI assisted workers: prioritizing various decisions that could apply in a context. In many industries the connected devices themselves are also assisting the worker, even pro-activity: for instance a smart vehicle warning or making recommendations to the driver. AI assisted solutions are becoming increasingly intelligent: especially in the context of end-to-end value streams empowered with underlying rich intelligent capabilities such as rules, predictive analytics, machine learning adaptive analytics, and Big Data recommendations. The overall\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/how-culture-always-trumps-technology-setrag-khoshafian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">end-to-end value stream<\/a>\u00a0of different types of works orchestration with humans, robots, virtual assistants, and robotic automation when applicable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ff9473 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4ff9473\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<ul>\n \t<li><em>Involving Cognitive or\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/bpm-books.com\/products\/best-practices-to-support-knowledge-workers-print\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Knowledge Workers<\/em><\/a>: Knowledge workers are the experts. They are the cognitive workers. Some have accumulated considerable knowledge and expertise in particular domains. Some organizations are facing a crisis as these workers start to retire and their sometimes irreplaceable know-how knowledge is lost. A complete digitization strategy needs to also capture, digitize, and automate this knowledge. It is another category of intelligence \u2013 this time emanating from\u00a0<em>human\u00a0<\/em>intelligence or knowledge. Work is not always predetermined or structured. There are sometimes \u2013 more often than we give credit to \u2013 unanticipated exceptions: ad-hoc,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pega.com\/insights\/articles\/trend-6-dynamic-case-management-modern-worker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">dynamic<\/a>, or unplanned tasks. The cognitive workers need to be involved to solve the difficult challenges. In some cases their expertise is invaluable. No \u201cArtificial\u201d intelligence will be able to replace this category of workers. They innovate and often come up with the policies and procedures in the organization. They can react on the spot, knowing what to do in a particular, exceptional situation. Knowledge workers can be engaged to resolve cases or processes. They can also analyze the reports and the performance of operationalized processes. The knowledge and know-how of this important category of workers need to be harvested and digitized. Ideally, they need to work closely with data scientists: to complement human knowledge with data and machine discovered models. Most importantly their knowledge need to be harvested and digitized in the context of end-to-end value streams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ee7180 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9ee7180\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs indicated above, this is a spectrum &#8211; there are many hybrids and ranges of automation in between these categories. So this whole idea of humans loosing jobs to automation &#8211; physical robots or robotic automation in software &#8211; needs to be approach much holistically.
