Covid-19 is keeping many of us at home, isolated from friends and family, without a steady diet of social activities, sporting events, or vacation and travel to distract us. As one senior leader recently told us, \u201call my guilty pleasures are gone, and I\u2019m left just wondering what I do with myself.\u201d Disruption and isolation can spark feelings of meaninglessness and existential despair.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b2c93a3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b2c93a3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Many people and organizations are also facing unprecedented challenges. Fredrickson\u2019s research suggests\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.positivityresonance.com\/meditations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">loving kindness meditation<\/a> as a possible outlet. But positivity can be a lot to ask for if you\u2019re recovering from the coronavirus while trying to save your small business.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c0b0908 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c0b0908\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If your idea of positivity is rainbows and unicorns, the concept probably feels tone deaf for the current context. Researchers define\u00a0<em> positivity <\/em>\u00a0differently: Dr. Kim Cameron, co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizations at the University of Michigan, writes that positivity is about thriving and flourishing both individually and collectively. It\u2019s about growth and well-being, not superficially cheerful attitudes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2668161 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2668161\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In tough times, focus on\u00a0<em> generativity<\/em>. Psychologist Erik Erikson wrote about generativity as a mature stage of development where an individual\u2019s focus turns toward helping others and improving the common good. Management scholar Gervase Bushe at Simon Fraser University\u2019s Beedie School of Business brings this thinking into the workplace with the suggestion that we can offer or ask for generative ideas that enable new options to become available.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ca4996 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4ca4996\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Often, simple questions can be the most effective tool for interrupting negative emotional contagion and making generativity possible. For example, when the complaints start to stack up, you can shift the conversation by saying,\u00a0<em> \u201cThat\u2019s what we don\u2019t want. What do we want? What\u2019s possible to transform our current situation?\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7997db6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7997db6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Here\u2019s an example of the power of that question. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, one of our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cvdl.ben.edu\/education\/doctoral-program\/?utm_source=Forbes&amp;amp;utm_medium=column&amp;amp;utm_campaign=coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> executive doctoral students<\/a>, Gamini Hewawasam, knew it would be a challenge for his Sri Lanka-based manufacturing company. Shipments weren\u2019t getting out of the country, new orders weren\u2019t coming in, and cash-on-hand was limited. So after considering how he and his team could transform, Hewawasam pivoted to start a new business that builds balcony greenhouses for Sri Lanka\u2019s urban residences. The government has encouraged citizens to increase cultivation; the new company,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cvdl.ben.edu\/blog\/pivoting-in-the-face-of-the-pandemic\/?utm_source=Forbes&amp;amp;utm_medium=column\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Goviyoo, builds greenhouses<\/a> that allow individuals to help supply their own food year-round.
