By 1920, the disruptive technologies of the day, electricity and internal combustion, were already almost 40 years old, but had little measurable economic impact. For most people, life largely went on as it always had, with little to indicate that much was amiss.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3aba0c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3aba0c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOver the next decade, however, that would change. As ecosystems formed around the new technologies, productivity soared and living standards dramatically improved. However, the news wasn\u2019t all good. While technology did much to improve people\u2019s lives, it also facilitated war and genocide on an unprecedented scale.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-16fc76a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"16fc76a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tToday, we are likely at a similar point. Nascent technologies have the potential to create a new era of productivity, but also horrific destruction. Too often, we forget that technology should serve humans and not the other way around. Make no mistake, This is not a problem we can innovate our way out of. Technology will not save us. We need to make better choices.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f567141 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f567141\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>The End Of Moore\u2019s Law And A Shift To A New Era Of Innovation<\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91e93ce elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"91e93ce\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOver the past several decades, innovation has become almost synonymous with digital technology. As we learned to cram more and more transistors onto a silicon wafer, value shifted to things like design and user experience. The speed of business increased and agility became a primary competitive attribute. Strategy and planning gave way to experimentation and iteration.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bcb6a9b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bcb6a9b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe success of venture-backed entrepreneurs led to arrogance and eventually\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2018\/the-silicon-valley-myth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the myth<\/a>\u00a0that Silicon Valley had somehow hit on a model that could be applied to any problem in any industry or context. With valuations of tech companies exploding, a new sense of technological libertarianism began to emerge in which many began to value algorithms over human judgment.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91ffff7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"91ffff7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tYet today, that narrative is beginning to unravel for two reasons. First, our ability to cram more transistors onto a silicon wafer, commonly known as Moore\u2019s Law,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2017\/what-will-we-do-after-moores-law-ends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is ending<\/a>. Second, we\u2019re beginning to realize that technology has a dark side. For example, artificial intelligence is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/10\/we-need-ai-that-is-explainable-auditable-and-transparent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vulnerable to bias<\/a>\u00a0and social media can have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/nurturing-self-compassion\/201703\/mental-health-and-the-effects-social-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">negative psychological effects<\/a>.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0742625 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0742625\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAt the same time, we\u2019re beginning to enter a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2016\/a-new-era-of-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new era of innovation<\/a>, which will be powered by new computing architectures, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2016\/cloud-computing-just-entered-totally-new-territory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quantum<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2016\/ibm-has-created-a-revolutionary-new-model-for-computing-the-human-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">neuromorphic computing<\/a>\u00a0as well as revolutions in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2018\/the-genomics-revolution-is-beginning-now-moving-at-full-steam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">synthetic biology<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2019\/materials-science-may-be-the-most-important-technology-of-the-next-decade-heres-why\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">materials science<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2019\/is-artificial-intelligence-the-new-productivity-paradox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">machine learning<\/a>. These will require a much more collaborative, multidisciplinary approach. No one will be able to go it alone.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f09581 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9f09581\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>A New Ethical Universe<\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9efb464 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9efb464\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOn July 16th, 1945, the world\u2019s first nuclear explosion shook the plains of New Mexico.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._Robert_Oppenheimer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J. Robert Oppenheimer<\/a>, who led the scientific team that developed the atomic bomb, chose the occasion to quote from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bhagavad_Gita\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bhagavad Gita<\/a>. \u201cNow I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds,\u201d he said. It was clear that we had crossed a moral Rubicon.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c66407 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c66407\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMany of the scientists of Oppenheimer\u2019s day became activists, preparing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russell%EF%BF%BD%EF%BF%BD%EF%BF%BDEinstein_Manifesto?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">manifesto\u00a0<\/a>that highlighted the dangers of nuclear weapons, which helped lead to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Partial_Test_Ban_Treaty?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Partial Test Ban Treaty<\/a>. The digital era, on the other hand, has seen little of the same reverence for the power and dangers of technology. In fact, for the most part, Silicon Valley\u2019s engineering culture has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2013\/05\/27\/change-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eschewed moral judgments<\/a>\u00a0about its inventions.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d76f0c8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d76f0c8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tToday, however, as our technology becomes almost unimaginably powerful, we increasingly need to confront significant ethical dilemmas. For example, artificial intelligence\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2016\/can-we-teach-algorithms-right-from-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raises a number of questions<\/a>, ranging from dilemmas about who is accountable for the decisions a machine makes to how we should decide what and how a machine learns.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-44d637f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"44d637f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOr consider\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CRISPR?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CRISPR<\/a>, the gene editing technology that is revolutionizing life sciences and has the potential to cure terrible diseases such as cancer and Multiple Sclerosis. We already have seen the problems hackers can create with computer viruses; how would we deal with hackers creating new biological viruses?\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd53ef6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cd53ef6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nThere have been some encouraging developments. Most major tech companies have joined with the ACLU, UNICEF, and other stakeholders to form the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.partnershiponai.org\/?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Partnership On AI<\/a>\u00a0to create a forum that can develop sensible standards for artificial intelligence.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/quote\/CRM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Salesforce<\/a>\u00a0has hired a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/salesforce-hires-paula-goldman-as-chief-ethical-and-humane-use-officer-2018-12?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0Chief Ethical and Human Use Officer<\/a>. CRISPR pioneer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2016\/can-we-teach-algorithms-right-from-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jennifer Doudna<\/a>\u00a0has begun a similar process at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/innovativegenomics.org\/?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Innovative Genomics Institute<\/a>. But these are little more than the first steps.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-424652a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"424652a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>The Challenge Of Populist Authoritarianism<\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3f65dd5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3f65dd5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIt seems fitting that the fall of the Berlin Wall happened during the same month, November 1989, that Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web. What followed was a time of great optimism in which both information and people enjoyed unprecedented freedom. The twin powers of technology and globalization seemed unstoppable.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ace45da elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ace45da\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAcross the world, free-market technocrats pushed a brand of market fundamentalism known as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington_Consensus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Consensus<\/a>. To receive loans, developing nations were made to accept harsh economic measures that would never have been accepted in western industrialized nations. Within developed countries, the interests of labor lost ground to those of corporations.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6c0e67f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6c0e67f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThese policies led to genuine achievements. Hundreds of millions were lifted out of poverty. Free trade and free travel increased. Technology enabled even a relatively poor kid in a poor country, armed with an Internet connection, to be able to access the same information as a wealthy scion studying at an Ivy League university.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7b6984 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e7b6984\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHowever, in many ways,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2019\/how-technology-and-globilization-have-failed-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">technology and globalization have failed us<\/a>. Income inequality is at its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/social\/inequality.htm#income\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">highest level in over 50 years<\/a>. Across most industries,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/03\/is-lack-of-competition-strangling-the-u-s-economy\" rel=\"noopener\">power is increasingly concentrated<\/a>\u00a0in just a handful of firms. In America\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/social-mobility-is-on-the-decline-and-with-it-american-dream-2017-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social mobility<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/brookings-now\/2017\/03\/23\/working-class-white-americans-are-now-dying-in-middle-age-at-faster-rates-than-minority-groups\/\" rel=\"noopener\">life expectancy in the white working class<\/a>\u00a0are declining, while anxiety and depression are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/americans-are-in-the-midst-of-an-anxiety-epidemic-stress-increase\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rising to epidemic levels<\/a>. Clearly, too many people have been left behind\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ec58a19 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ec58a19\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPerhaps not surprisingly, we\u2019ve seen a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4faf6c4e-1d84-11e9-b2f7-97e4dbd3580d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">global rise in populist authoritarian movements<\/a>\u00a0that have shifted governance dramatically against the type of open policies that fueled globalization and technological advancement in the first place. The pendulum has swung too far. We need to refocus our energy from technology and markets back to the humans they are supposed to serve.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c7cdb23 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c7cdb23\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>We Are The Choices We Make<\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af23df0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"af23df0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhile the problems we have today can seem unprecedented and overwhelming, we\u2019ve been here before. After World War II, the world teetered between liberal democracy and authoritarianism. New technologies, such as nuclear power, antibiotics, and computers represented unprecedented possibilities and challenges.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f2e79d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f2e79d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tYet in the wake of destruction, an entirely new international system was created. The United Nations provided a forum to resolve problems peacefully.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bretton_Woods_system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bretton Woods<\/a>\u00a0stabilized the global financial system. The creation of the welfare state helped mitigate the harsher effects of the market economy and stronger protections for labor helped build a vibrant middle class. Arms agreements reduced the risk of armageddon.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-80b5cb2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"80b5cb2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tToday, we are at a similar crossroads. We are present at the creation of a new technological era in the midst of a pivotal political moment. The choices we make over the next decade will have repercussions that will reverberate throughout the new century. Will we serve our technologies or will they serve us?
