Leveraging Human Capabilities in a Future of Expanding Automation"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"2232\" class=\"elementor elementor-2232\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1dafe4dd elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1dafe4dd\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1c177608\" data-id=\"1c177608\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-53425ab5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"53425ab5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHow will labor markets evolve in our 21st century digital economy?\u00a0\u00a0What\u2019s the likely future of jobs, given that our increasingly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.irvingwb.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/race-against-the-machine.html\" rel=\"noopener\">smart machines<\/a>\u00a0are now being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.irvingwb.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/jobs-in-the-age-of-watson.html\" rel=\"noopener\">applied<\/a>\u00a0to activities requiring intelligence and cognitive capabilities that not long ago were viewed as the exclusive domain of humans?\u00a0\u00a0How will AI, robotics and other advanced technologies transform the very nature of work?\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9e3cb58 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9e3cb58\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOver the past few years, a number of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.aeaweb.org\/doi\/pdfplus\/10.1257\/jep.29.3.3\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"noopener\">papers<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/future-of-organizations-and-work\/jobs-lost-jobs-gained-what-the-future-of-work-will-mean-for-jobs-skills-and-wages\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.irvingwb.com\/blog\/2018\/06\/harnessing-the-collective-intelligence-of-humans-and-machines.html\" rel=\"noopener\">books<\/a>\u00a0have addressed these very important questions.\u00a0\u00a0They generally conclude that\u00a0AI will have a major impact on jobs and the very nature of work.\u00a0\u00a0For the most part,\u00a0 they view AI as mostly augmenting rather than replacing human capabilities, automating the more routine parts of a job and increasing the productivity and quality of workers, so they can focus on those aspect of the job that most require human attention.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.irvingwb.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/automation-and-employment-in-the-21st-century.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Overall<\/a>, few jobs will be entirely automated, but automation will likely transform the vast majority of occupations.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b15833a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b15833a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tA recent McKinsey\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/future-of-work\/jobs-lost-jobs-gained-what-the-future-of-work-will-mean-for-jobs-skills-and-wages\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0noted while there will likely be enough work to maintain full employment by 2030, the transition will be very challenging, \u201con a scale not seen since the transition of the labor force out of agriculture in the early 1900s in the United States and Europe, and more recently in in China.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The report estimated that \u201cup to 375 million workers, or 14 percent of the global workforce, may need to change occupations &#8211; and virtually all workers may need to adapt to work alongside machines in new ways.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a8cfc70 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a8cfc70\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGiven these predictions about the changing nature of work, what should companies do?\u00a0\u00a0How should firms prepare for a brave new world where we can expect major economic dislocations along with the creation of new jobs, new business models and whole new industries, and where many people will be working alongside smart machines in whole new ways?\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b4b2be elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8b4b2be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cUnderneath the understandable anxiety about the future of work lies a significant missed opportunity,\u201d wrote\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/insights\/us\/en\/authors\/h\/john-hagel-iii.html\" rel=\"noopener\">John Hagel<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnseelybrown.com\/bio.html\" rel=\"noopener\">John Seely Brown<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/insights\/us\/en\/authors\/w\/maggie-wooll.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Maggie Wooll<\/a>\u00a0in a new report from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/pages\/center-for-the-edge\/topics\/center-for-the-edge.html\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"noopener\">Deloitte Center for the Edge<\/a>, &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/insights\/us\/en\/focus\/technology-and-the-future-of-work\/redefining-work-organizational-transformation.html?icid=dcom_promo_featured|us;en\" rel=\"noopener\">Redefine Work: The untapped opportunity for expanding value<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThat opportunity is to return to the most basic question of all: What is work?\u00a0\u00a0If we come up with a creative answer to that, we have the potential to create significant new value for the enterprise.\u00a0\u00a0And paradoxically, these gains will likely come less from all the new technology than from the human workforce you already have today.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7941d53 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7941d53\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/insights\/us\/articles\/4779_Redefine-work\/DI_Redefine-work.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Deloitte report<\/a>\u00a0advises companies to aggressively deploy automation technologies, not as a way of getting rid of employees or reskilling them to pursue other routine work, but with the specific intent to free them up to pursue new forms of work that will create more value for both the workers and the enterprise.\u00a0\u00a0They should focus their energies on redefining work at a much more fundamental level: by identifying and addressing unseen problems and opportunities.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c017cc6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c017cc6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<em>What is work?<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0This is actually a very hard question to answer.\u00a0\u00a0Work is both totally familiar and frustratingly abstract.\u00a0\u00a0We go to work; it\u2019s how we spend much of our time; we work at something to which we devote mental and physical resources.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0e572b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e0e572b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCompanies create value based on the work of their employees.\u00a0\u00a0For many companies, the traditional path to value-creation is primarily based on cutting costs and improving efficiencies across all their operations. But it\u2019s hard to continuously create value by just chasing operational efficiencies and cost reductions.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Such companies often struggle to create real value quarter after quarter because their employees spend most of their time on routine tasks.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7a2ac2b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7a2ac2b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/insights\/us\/en\/focus\/technology-and-the-future-of-work\/redefining-work-organizational-transformation.html?id=us:2el:3pr:4di4779:5awa:6di:MMDDYY:fow&amp;pkid=1005629\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0recommends that companies redefine work by shifting their employees efforts and attention from executing tightly defined, routine tasks to engaging in four key types of activities: identifying\u00a0<em>unseen<\/em>\u00a0problems and opportunities; developing solutions to solve problems and address opportunities; implementing such solutions; and iterating and learning (reflecting) based on the solutions\u2019actual impact.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-55ab619 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"55ab619\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs companies automate their routine tasks and processes by introducing increasingly sophisticated technologies, they should be thoughtful about how to redefine work for their employees.\u00a0\u00a0If they just look to reduce headcount, they will likely be vulnerable to competitors who view technology and automation as a way to create more value.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, they should look to capture more value through a workforce that\u2019s incented to identify and address unseen business opportunities by leveraging their unique human capabilities, including:\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>Curiosity &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0asking questions, learning, understanding, probing, exploring.\u00a0\u00a0The right questions can help uncover unseen problems and opportunities.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Imagination<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; extending the quest for unseen opportunities beyond current assumptions of what is known and what is possible, leading to the creation of new knowledge and solutions.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Intuition<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Drawing from practice, experience, empathy and deep contextual knowledge to generate surprising connections and insights.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Creativity\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; is all about improvisation, and can be applied in any domain to help come up with solutions to problems in novel, effective, ways.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Empathy<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; helps us see, understand and interpret problems from the point of view of the people we deal with, including customers and coworkers.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Emotional intelligence\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; builds on the foundation of empathy to manage and direct emotions in problem-solving.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Social intelligence<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; further helps an individual worker decide how best to mobilize others around addressing a problem or opportunity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f2cdd7b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f2cdd7b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHow should companies get started in their work redefinition journey?\u00a0\u00a0\u201cRedefining work on a fundamental level, in a way that applies to all work, across an entire company, is no small feat.\u00a0\u00a0Realizing the full benefits will require major organizational transformation.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0While this may sound daunting, \u201csmall moves, smartly made, can set big things in motion.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The report recommends that companies do so by driving a number of significant shifts throughout the organization:\n<ul>\n \t<li><em>Executing routines tasks<\/em>\u00a0\u2794<em>\u00a0addressing unseen problems and opportunities<\/em>, &#8211; to help create new sources of values;<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Improving efficiency\u00a0<\/em>\u2794<em>\u00a0expanding the value delivered to customers and others, &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>as the primary objective of work;<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Skills\u00a0<\/em>\u2794<em>\u00a0capabilities<\/em>, &#8211; to better cultivate and leverage human qualities.<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Individuals \u2794 workgroups,<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; to help accelerate value creation;<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Rigid processes\u00a0<\/em>\u2794<em>\u00a0flexible practices, &#8211;<\/em>\u00a0as the key management principles;<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Engagement\u00a0<\/em>\u2794<em>\u00a0passion<\/em>, &#8211; to give greater meaning to day-to-day work;<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Gigs\u00a0<\/em>\u2794<em>\u00a0guilds<\/em>, &#8211; to better engage with the growing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.irvingwb.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/the-rise-of-the-on-demand-economy.html\" rel=\"noopener\">on-demand economy<\/a>\u00a0and contingent workers; and<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Talent acquisition and retention\u00a0<\/em>\u2794<em>\u00a0talent development, &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>to take advantage of their existing workforce.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a9918a1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a9918a1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cFundamentally redefining work is more than a nice-to-have &#8211;
