At least that is the impression.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vodafone.com\/business\/iot\/iotbarometer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Vodafon\u2019s 2017\/2018 Barometer of IoT<\/a>\u00a0shows trends and positive results in the adoption of IoT in different industries. According to the survey \u201c74% agree that digital transformation is impossible without IoT.\u201d The study does reflect some concrete ROI returns and success from those who have been adopting IoT. Interestingly, the report indicates\u00a0<em>IoT is being integrated in existing business processes.\u00a0<\/em>As we shall see, this business process centricity (which we called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pega.com\/insights\/articles\/internet-everything-process-everything\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Process of Everything<\/a>), is the key to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pega.com\/insights\/articles\/adaptive-digital-factory-business-value-iot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">IoT success<\/a>.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71e4cb9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"71e4cb9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIoT\/IIoT\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/3221618\/internet-of-things\/survey-enterprise-iot-faces-skills-shortage-security-challenges.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">\u00a0challenges includes skills shortage, standards, security, uncertain ROI, etc.\u00a0<\/a>Usually the forecasts show the exponential growth to tens of billions of devices by 2020 and beyond. However, even though there has been some interesting ROI results as indicated in the report mentioned above, the full potential ROI of IoT\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theiotmagazine.com\/top-5-industrial-iot-trends-from-our-iiot-survey-2017-71bd1eceba99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">remains elusive<\/a>.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5cee30a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5cee30a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nHow should organizations achieve ROI results to succeed with IoT\/IIoT? There are couple of approaches.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-803a9d5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"803a9d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>The Bottom-Connect-Up and Middle-Platform-Up Approaches<\/strong><\/h3><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ea0ea46 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ea0ea46\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIoT\/IIoT is about connecting sensors and actuators. The foundation for connectivity, balancing range and power supply considerations is of course critical. There are several components in the overall stack and multi-tier architectures of IoT\/IIoT. The lowest levels include\u00a0<em>physical\u00a0<\/em>devices and systems. It is precisely this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iot.ieee.org\/newsletter\/may-2016\/internet-of-things-and-beyond-cyber-physical-systems.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>cyber-physical<\/em><\/a>\u00a0connectivity that is laying the foundation of the IoT\/IIoT era. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iiconsortium.org\/IIC_PUB_G1_V1.80_2017-01-31.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Industrial Internet Consortium\u2019s Reference Architecture<\/a>\u00a0(IIRA) describes the Control Domain in the Functional View of IIRA.\u00a0The Control Domain&#8217;s Communication &#8220;connects sensors, actuators, controllers, gateways and other edge systems.&#8221; Business logic can also be applied at the edges. Increasingly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cisco.com\/tag\/edge-computing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">edge computing<\/a>\u00a0is becoming extremely important in the bottom-connected up approaches. The bottom-connected-up approach focuses on with what could be done with the control and edge layers (networking, bandwidth, power, control, etc.) and moves up to achieve value.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d810a6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d810a6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nAs IoT\/IIoT evolved, we saw an explosion of IoT Platforms: currently there are anywhere between 200 \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iothub.com.au\/news\/the-number-of-iot-platforms-jumps-to-450-467554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">450 IoT\/IIoT platform vendors<\/a>, depending on the features and taxonomies.\u00a0In others words, many. Too many! \u00a0IoT Platforms are cyber-physical\u00a0<em>middleware\u00a0<\/em>with capabilities such as connectivity, device management, analytics, security, identity management, sensor data management, and APIs for connectivity with enterprise systems. IoT Platforms also support Cloud deployments and application development capabilities. The IoT platform approaches focuses on the middleware platform as the core enabler for IoT value.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-625041a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"625041a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNow the bottom-up connectivity and middleware approaches via IoT platforms do have some merit. But the overall approach for business success and business value is achieved through top-down Digital Process Automation best practices, as discussed next.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a292a33 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a292a33\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>What is Digital Process Automation (DPA)?<\/strong><\/h3><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3f67e3f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3f67e3f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFrom its early days of operational efficiency management discipline to intelligent process automation systems,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.pega.com\/insights\/resources\/intelligent-bpm-next-wave-customer-centric-business-applications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">BPM has been evolving<\/a>. Artificial Intelligence, Robotic Automation, and of course Digital Technologies are now seamlessly supported or incorporated in robust BPM platforms and solutions. There is a spectrum of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theiotmagazine.com\/iot-robotics-for-the-spectrum-of-work-automation-f6e56f234fd8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">worker categories and work automation\u00a0<\/a>types that are supported through DPA. IoT Forum\u2019s puts collaboration and Business Processes at the top of the multi-level architecture for IoT.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-26821e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"26821e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nThis is significant and spot on. Success can be achieved top-down with concrete business objectives from the get-go. Top-down business solutions involve People, Connected Devices (aka IoT\/IIoT), trading Partners, and Enterprise Applications (aka Systems of Record): all collaborating and orchestrating their activities towards concrete and measurable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The collaborations are in the context of End-to-End\u00a0<em>Value\u00a0<\/em>Streams (the operating word being\u00a0<em>Value),\u00a0<\/em>that are modeled,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/spectrums-work-automation-future-here-setrag-khoshafian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">automated<\/a>\u00a0and monitored through DPA for continuous improvement.
