There are plenty of books and articles describing the underlying algorithms and technologies of \u201cBlocks\u201d and their hash-based \u201cchaining.\u201d\u00a0And yes, there is some confusion as to exactly what is Blockchain!\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa74e72 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aa74e72\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe will not cover yet another tutorial on Blockchain. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blockchain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Wikipedia<\/a>\u00a0entry is quite good. Also one of the best books that I have read on Blockchain is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blockchain-Revolution-Technology-Changing-Business-ebook\/dp\/B0141ZP32E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Blockchain Revolution<\/em><\/a>\u00a0by Tapscott &amp; Tapscott (the author of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikinomics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Wikinomics<\/em><\/a><em>).\u00a0<\/em>If you are a novice in Blockchain, this will be a great place to start.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b61b94 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0b61b94\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThere are many cryptocurrencies and in the recent few years we saw an explosion of cryptocurrency offerings.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Coinmarketcap<\/a>\u00a0ranks the top 100 cryptocurrencies with market capitalization. Some of the popular ones include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoin.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Bitcoin<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethereum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ehtereum<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ripple<\/a>. Now, the Blockchain implementations for each of these cryptocurrencies is different. There is no one single \u201cBlockchain.\u201d The algorithms and implementations for block validation (called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/tech\/how-does-bitcoin-mining-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">mining<\/a>\u201d in the cryptocurrency world) are different. In addition to the peer-to-peer decentralized and disintermediated recording of transactions, Blockchains also execute\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/2018\/03\/09\/smart-contracts-and-the-blockchain-explained.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Smart Contracts<\/a>.\u00a0<em>Smart contracts are the rules and mutual agreements between parties that get executed in the Blockchain.<\/em>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c808b8d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c808b8d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHow? Well there are specific languages that capture the business rules and business contractual logic. The smart contract programs get compiled into the virtual machine code of the cryptocurrency and execute in its Blockchain. The smart contract language will have its own syntax and semantics and there could be substantive differences among\u00a0the smart contract languages &#8211; with respect to the richness of the execution model, speed, reliability and security of contract executions. Two of the more popular ones include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solidity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ethereum\u2019s Solidity<\/a>\u00a0and a new and exciting Smart\u00a0Contract language called\u00a0Rholang, pertaining to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developer.rchain.coop\/tutorial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">RChain<\/a>\u00a0. Rholang is still in development by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rchain.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">RChain Coop<\/a>\u00a0and is planned to go prime time by the end of 2018. The interesting aspect of Rholang is that the execution semantics is a variant of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Communicating-Mobile-Systems-Pi-Calculus\/dp\/0521658691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Pi Calculus<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; the same calculus that underpinned the\u00a0Business Process\u00a0Execution Language\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/0292\/4f50b18476c0ca41e021dd561cae6d830f3e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">BPEL<\/a>\u00a0a few years ago! In Rholang, processes can\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rchain-architecture.readthedocs.io\/en\/latest\/contracts\/contract-design.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">send and receive messages<\/a>\u00a0on named channels \u2013 such as \u201cAddress.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4259190 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4259190\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>Internet of Value<\/strong><\/h3><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bc7c59a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bc7c59a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBlockchain is very much a revolution. It is the engine that empowers the emergence of the\u00a0<em>Internet of Value<\/em>. Ripple\u2019s description of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ripple.com\/insights\/a-vision-for-the-internet-of-value\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Internet of Value<\/a>\u00a0is quite good: \u201cvalue to be exchanged as quickly as information.\u201d The speed of the exchange of value has tremendous implications in many applications: for consumers, industries, and governments. It is not just monetary value. As noted above Blockchains can also execute business logic through Smart Contracts.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca94e3d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ca94e3d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSo we have the\u00a0<em>Internet of Information\u00a0<\/em>(the more traditional Internet \u2013 the one we use every day searching for information), the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/mobile\/mobile-devices\/rise-of-things-iots-role-in-business-processes\/a\/d-id\/1317010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Internet of Things<\/em><\/a>\u00a0or connected devices that are becoming pervasive, and now the\u00a0<em>Internet of Value<\/em>. Through peer-to-peer transactions without intermediaries Blockchain technology is allowing individuals as well as organizations easily exchange digital money and execute business contracts between trading partners. To understand the\u00a0<em>economic value\u00a0<\/em>of Blockchain a good reading is the 2017 article on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/cryptoeconomics-australia\/the-blockchain-economy-a-beginners-guide-to-institutional-cryptoeconomics-64bf2f2beec4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Blockchain economy<\/a>\u00a0that concludes as follows: \u201cThe blockchain and associated technological changes will massively disrupt current economic conditions. The industrial revolution ushered in a world where business models were predicated on hierarchy and financial capitalism. The blockchain revolution will see an economy dominated by human capitalism and greater individual autonomy.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e094832 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e094832\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>IoT\/IIoT and Blockchain<\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d98aac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d98aac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThere is a close affinity between Blockchain and IoT\/IIoT. The potential of increasingly intelligent connected devices exchanging value peer-to-peer either autonomously or semi-autonomously is huge. However, it could run into formidable execution challenges with some Blockchain implementations \u2013 such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.bitcoin.it\/wiki\/Proof_of_work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Proof of Work<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; that are relatively slow and quite wasteful. Consumer IoT \u2013 that is becoming pervasive in connected homes\u2013 and Industrial IoT \u2013 in process and discrete manufacturing &#8211; will involve billions of connected devices. Some of these devices will be small and tiny. Others will be large robots and turbo engines. There are many conflicting predictions on the number of connected devices or Things. The \u201ctraditional\u201d Cisco number was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/dam\/en_us\/about\/ac79\/docs\/innov\/IoT_IBSG_0411FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">50 billion devices by 2020<\/a>\u00a0but I have seen numbers as high as 200 billion and even a trillion devices by then. In other words, many! With the complexity of Blockchain validation , there are those who are skeptical about peer-to-peer IoT transactions using at least some of the current state of the art Blockchain technologies. More importantly, there are also Blockchain transaction fees and these could be prohibitive for IoT\/IIoT. For these reasons \u2013 scale and transaction fees \u2013 we are seeing the emergence of a number of alternative solutions targeting specifically IoT\/IIoT transactions.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/news\/closer-look-iota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">IOTA<\/a>\u00a0for instance does not have a transaction fee and has its own distributed ledger implementation \u2013 called Tangle \u2013 that claims to provide a more scalable architecture for IoT.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7eddeb4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7eddeb4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>Valuechains<\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6717b21 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6717b21\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhich brings us to Valuechains. The original definition from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/pages\/article\/newSTR_66.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Michael Porter<\/a>\u00a0defines a Valuechain as \u201ca chain of activities that a firm operating in a specific industry performs in order to deliver a valuable product or service for the market.\u201d It does not have to be a \u201cfirm.\u201d The same concept applies to consumers or any entity that is delivering value.\u00a0The operating word is\u00a0<em>value.\u00a0<\/em>A Valuechain (aka\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/digital-transformation-digitizing-value-stream-setrag-khoshafian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Valuestream<\/a>) therefore is an end-to-end business process that orchestrates participants who could be: people, business units, trading partners and often enterprise legacy applications and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theiotmagazine.com\/digitizing-the-value-stream-with-iot-9d1eb666154c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">connected devices<\/a>\u00a0(IoT\/IIoT).\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2cebed4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2cebed4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTo illustrate the relationship of Valuechains to Blockchains and IoT\/IIoT, consider this high level three-tier architecture. With connected devices and the increasingly central role of automation especially through a Digital Transformation (DX) platform that supports\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.pega.com\/digital-process-automation-forrester-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Digital Process Automation<\/a>\u00a0(next generation BPM), a robust pattern is emerging:\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-414da61 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"414da61\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n \t<li><em>Valuechain Orchestration Layer<\/em>: At the top you have the end-to-end Valuechain that orchestrates and sequences tasks involving people, automated devices, and enterprise applications (aka systems of record) and trading partners. As noted above these could be\u00a0<em>support<\/em>\u00a0business processes such as on-boarding an employee or a contractor in an organization. They can also be\u00a0<em>mission critical<\/em>\u00a0business processes such as Digital Prescriptive Maintenance, Supply Chain or even end-to-end innovation, manufacturing, marketing, selling and service. The DX platform supporting the modeling and automation of Valuechains can be deployed on the cloud, on premise (for enterprises) or hybrids. At various steps, tasks or milestones within the Valuechain, Blockchain enabled transactions can be leveraged for either smart contract rules or exchange of cryptocurrencies.<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Blockchain Layer:\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0The middle layer of the three tier architecture is the Blockchain layer. It could involve one or more Blockchain implementations for specific cryptocurrency objectives. The Blockchains will execute either smart contract rules, or exchange cryptocurrencies or both. The tasks or milestones of the end-to-end Valuechain will leverage Blockchain in specific steps: to realize for instance a service level smart contract obligation between parties; or pay a truck driver delivering goods; or track financial transactions. Each of these micro-transactions provides value. But the more impactful value of Blockchain is achieved through the end-to-end Valuechain that addresses often complex mission critical solutions.\u00a0Both theValuechain layer as well as the lower IoT\/IIoT layer will be leveraging the Blockchain layer. Depending upon the specific task or step being executed the appropriate Blockchain will be invoked. That decision will typically be made at the Valuechain layer.<\/li>\n \t<li><em>IoT\/IIoT Connected Device Layer:\u00a0<\/em>The lowest layer will be the IoT\/IIoT connectivity layer. Physical and increasingly connected devices are becoming part of the end-to-end value streams. With Blockchain as well as IoT\/IIoT edge computing an added advantage is pushing the execution and the transactions to the edges. This means devices can potentially carry out autonomous or semi-autonomous transactions. These transactions could, for instance, purchase energy directly as needed, or pay the tolls in logistics applications, or even carry out service level business logic locally within the device or within gateways managing multiple devices. Here also the overall Valuechain is managed and automated at the top layer, with IoT\/IIoT edge computing transactions delegated to the connected devices &#8211; that can leverage Blockchain as needed. The corresponding Blockchain or distributed ledger solutions needs to optimize the scalability and minimize the transaction fees as we noted above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32b2a6b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"32b2a6b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7281bc0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7281bc0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTasks or activities within an End-to-End Valuechain as well as entire chains of tasks or activities can leverage Blockchain. From financial transactions to contracts such as service levels or quality, End-to-end Valuechains can be modeled and automated with Blockchain transactions at specific steps. Similar to IoT\/IIoT, the road to Blockchain\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cognitiveworld.com\/article\/road-iot-success-runs-through-dpa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">success also runs through Digital Process Automation (DPA)<\/a>.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da1b7d3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"da1b7d3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExamples of Valuechains include\u00a0<em>support<\/em>\u00a0processes such as on-boarding an employee or IT helpdesk. Valuechains can also be\u00a0<em>mission critical.\u00a0<\/em>There are ample opportunities for leveraging Blockchain in Valuechains.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/digital-transformation-supply-chain-through-iot-setrag-khoshafian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Supply chain<\/a>\u00a0is particularly interesting as it can involve the highest level Digital Process Automation layer, with Blockchain and IoT connectivity for end-to-end monitoring of the supply chain as a whole. Various smart contracts for service level as well as financial transaction obligations could also leverage Blockchain. In fact, Blockchain can be a promising backbone for security and connectivity in the overall supply chain. Blockchain can be leveraged for asset tracking and asset contracting \u2013 all necessary when multiple organizations are involved often across geographical boundaries.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6f20990 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6f20990\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Blockchain-enabled Internet of Value is really the\u00a0<strong><em>Internet of Valuechain<\/em><\/strong>: it could involve simple transactions or contracts between participants or there could be multiple transactions and smart contracts involved for a specific business objective delivering value end-to-end. The Valuechain is modeled, digitized, and automated through a Digital Transformation platform that supports Digital Process Automation.
