Part of the problem is the folklore surrounding Artificial Intelligence\u00a0<em>and\u00a0<\/em>Blockchain. Here we elaborate on someof the core synergies between Blockchain and AI \u2013 focusing primarily on the advantages of AI for all the layers of a robust Blockchain reference architecture. The business value of the AI is realized in the context of end-to-end value chains.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-10208e7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"10208e7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEnd-to-End value chains orchestrating people, enterprise applications, trading partners \u2013 while leveraging Blockchains and IoT\/IIoT \u2013 is where the Internet of Value achieves its full potential. Value chains are business processes that are digitized and automated through a Digital Process Automation platform. AI is the nervous system of the value chains.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7210d75 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7210d75\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>AI<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-113aa67 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"113aa67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAI has been around since the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_artificial_intelligence\" rel=\"noopener\">mid-1950s<\/a>! The well-known and respected\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aaai.org\/Organization\/organization.php\" rel=\"noopener\">Association of Artificial Intelligence<\/a>\u00a0(AAAI) was established in 1979. But AI had lots of ups and downs with the associated hype. There was a time when rule-based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Expert-Systems-Experts-Kamran-Parsaye\/dp\/0471601756\" rel=\"noopener\">Expert Systems<\/a>\u00a0were predicted to take over the world. They didn\u2019t. However, more recently, we are seeing an incredible\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/insights\/2015\/03\/ai-resurgence-now\/\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"noopener\">rekindling of interest and deployment of AI<\/a>. A perfect storm of technological advances in computing, databases, and networking have caused the emergence of AI as one of the most significant digital transformation trends. However, the hype is still there! It is amazing that even after so many years, there is still some confusion as to exactly what should be considered \u201cAI.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-556e3e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"556e3e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tArtificial Intelligence, at its core, is trying to emulate humans: make intelligent decisions, sense, see, move, carry out tasks, talk, and interact like humans. One of the major areas impacted by AI is\u00a0<em>work<\/em>. AI can be the core engine for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/spectrums-work-automation-future-here-setrag-khoshafian\/\" rel=\"noopener\">automation<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 either through physical robots or software robots, also known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theiotmagazine.com\/iot-robotics-for-the-spectrum-of-work-automation-f6e56f234fd8\" rel=\"noopener\">Robotic Process Automation<\/a>; or through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.pega.com\/products\/pega-platform\/intelligent-virtual-assistant\" rel=\"noopener\">intelligent virtual assistants<\/a>\u00a0for AI-assisted work; or through involving cognitive workers who think for a living. \u00a0There is no question that many repetitive and well-defined tasks will eventually be replaced through AI-enabled automation: these span smart manufacturing shop floor functions to front or back-office repetitive tasks. AI also attempts to learn continuously. The ultimate objective is to make it difficult in specific highly technical or specialized domains (work) to distinguish between AI and humans. Furthermore, robust AI systems can intelligently correlate and respond to real-time events. The combination of analytical \u2013 especially predictive \u2013 models with real-time event processing is a powerful enabler for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.pega.com\/insights\/resources\/pegaworld-2018-digital-transformation-rapid-responsiveness-raytheon-video\" rel=\"noopener\">responsive systems<\/a>. In many applications, AI is providing augmentation and assistance to humans.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e6b8ceb elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"e6b8ceb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/532386f9a72d1dd857a8-41058da2837557ec5bfc3b00e1f6cf43.ssl.cf5.rackcdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Blockchain-1.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-828bba9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"828bba9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOf course, AI can be applied in all areas within consumer and enterprise applications \u2013 not just work automation. However, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/blockchain-valuechain-setrag-khoshafian\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Blockchain evolves into value chain<\/a>\u00a0the emphasis on intelligent automation becomes imperative. This spectrum of automation enabled and empowered through AI, is critical to Blockchain solutions \u2013 discussed next.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5526904 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5526904\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>Blockchain<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-07cf0da elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"07cf0da\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBlockchain also has its own share of speculation, connotations, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/27\/business\/dealbook\/blockchains-guide-information.html\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"noopener\">confusion<\/a>. Blockchain is a type of\u00a0distributed and decentralized ledger. Each Blockchain involves many copies of a decentralized ledger database that exist on nodes all around the globe. Compared to AI, Blockchain is in its infancy. Blockchain traces its inception to Cryptocurrencies \u2013 and especially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoin.org\/en\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin<\/a>. It was launched only about a decade ago, and the first-ever block of the Bitcoin Blockchain was unleashed by Satoshi Nakamoto on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/bitcoins-quirky-genesis-block-turns-eight-years-old-today\/\" rel=\"noopener\">January 3, 2009<\/a>. We still do not know exactly who is (or who are) the famous inventor(s) of Bitcoin \u2013 which is amazing in the digital era of leaks and disclosures! Whoever this person(s) is (are), they are good\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookofsatoshi.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">communicators<\/a>.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ace149 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1ace149\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThere are many salient characteristics of Blockchains, and part of the confusion is that \u201cBlockchain\u201d connotes many disciplines and technologies. Artificial Intelligence is relevant to each one of these but impacts them differently.\u00a0 In addition to the peer-to-peer decentralized and disintermediated recording of transactions, some Blockchains also execute\u00a0<em>Smart<\/em>\u00a0Contracts.\u00a0Smart contracts are the policies, rules, and mutual agreements between parties that get executed in the Blockchain.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0755543 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0755543\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>Sources of \u201cIntelligence\u201d<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bfdb9d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bfdb9d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nBefore delving into this important synergy between Blockchain and AI, we need to frame the sources of intelligence. There are four main sources, and each of these has a tremendous impact on Blockchain applications.\n<ul>\n \t<li>Regulations, Knowledge, Policies, &amp; Procedures: \u00a0There is an enormous amount of knowledge in written documents. In any application domain or industry, there are policy and procedure manuals with inherent and embedded knowledge. This spans operations manuals, organizational procedures, as well as regulatory compliance documents. Rules-based systems, as well as language processing, can be leveraged to extract the knowledge and then operationalize it in Blockchain applications.\u00a0<strong>Blockchain Smart Contracts<\/strong>\u00a0can be leveraged to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebizq.net\/topics\/bpm\/features\/6721.html\" rel=\"noopener\">digitize the business rules<\/a>\u00a0in the Policies &amp; Procedures (e.g., by-laws or operational regulations) and execute them on the Blockchain. For more complex policies, declarative business rules can digitize the policies and work in conjunction with Smart Contracts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Human Intelligence: Cognitive workers \u2013 people who use data or information to do their jobs \u2013 have a lot of deep knowledge in their heads that needs to be harvested. As noted above, AI-assisted human work often digitizes the knowledge of cognitive workers. Their expertise also needs to be understood, digitized, and operationalized, sometimes in intelligent virtual assistants or bots.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Blockchain\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/blockchain-organizational-culture-part-ii-setrag-khoshafian\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Decentralized Applications<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>can leverage the cognitive workers\u2019 knowledge either through the digitization of business rules or through fully or semi-automated intelligent assistants. Cognitive workers participate in end-to-end digitized value streams \u2013 operationalized through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.pega.com\/digital-process-automation-forrester-2017\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Processes Automation<\/a>\u00a0(DPA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Legacy Code: Another important source of business intelligence is embedded in legacy code that contains business logic. The embedded policies can become ossified, with little or no business visibility. They are difficult to change or extend. The challenge is to leverage the intelligence in legacy systems while allowing the organization to modernize and be agile.\u00a0<strong>Blockchain Architectures\u00a0<\/strong>involve orchestration of Smart Contracts with API invocations of AI decisions through secure exchanges. Here again, the DPA layer can be an intelligent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.pega.com\/insights\/resources\/bpm-professor-episode-7-legacy-modernization-through-bpm\" rel=\"noopener\">modernization bridge<\/a>\u00a0between legacy applications and Blockchain messaging \u2013 much the same way it is now with business-to-business protocols.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtinsights.com\/process-data-its-about-time\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Data<\/a>: Blockchain stores all the business transactions: the addresses of the senders\/receivers of exchanges, if applicable, the amounts of exchanges, the meta-data of transactions, and the execution of code in the Blockchain, etc. The\u00a0<em>chain<\/em>\u00a0in Blockchain only grows and is never deleted. Information cannot be modified. Only validated blocks can be added to the Blockchain. So, each Blockchain grows.\u00a0<strong>Blockchain\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Data_mining\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Data Mining<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Machine_learning\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Machine Learning<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>techniques with Blockchain transaction data sets are a tremendous source of intelligence. There are patterns of knowledge and intelligence hidden in the Blockchain data. AI can learn from the Blockchain data and potentially predict outcomes (positive or adverse) before they happen. Decisions based on AI predictions can be fed back to the data source to improve the precision of the predictions continuously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a1e28f8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"a1e28f8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/532386f9a72d1dd857a8-41058da2837557ec5bfc3b00e1f6cf43.ssl.cf5.rackcdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Blockchain-2.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2eb5889 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2eb5889\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBlockchain is an important and robust source of ever-growing data to mine or gain intelligence from a plethora of AI techniques. However, there are other sources of data. Some of these sources include social networks,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtinsights.com\/process-master-data-digital-transformation-part-ii\/\" rel=\"noopener\">connected devices<\/a>\u00a0(IoT\/IIoT), business application transaction data \u2013 and more. Combining and aggregating these data sources with Blockchain transactions constitute the \u201craw\u201d Big Data for analysis. No easy task but a tremendous source of continuous optimization of Blockchain solutions. Data mining, as well as machine learning, can then generate and optimize the intelligent decision models.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-075118c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"075118c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThere is a caveat, though. Even after the combination and aggregation of the data involving Blockchains, the\u00a0<em>value\u00a0<\/em>of the discovered or analyzed models can be achieved only through execution. The AI decision models need to be made the \u201cnervous system\u201d of end-to-end value streams that are digitized and operationalized through DPA.\n<blockquote><em>From all of the aforementioned sources of intelligence, the discovery of intelligence needs to be followed with action in Value Chains<\/em><\/blockquote>\nThis action is the execution of decisions in the context of end-to-end value streams orchestrating people, enterprise applications, devices, robots, and of course, the Blockchain! Each is carrying specific tasks assigned to them through the underlying AI-enabled DPA.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0cf496f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0cf496f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>Example: Warranty Value Chain<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eb1c7dc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eb1c7dc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe wrap up with a pragmatic example: the application of Blockchain AI in Warranty Value Chains. Despite a reduction in the number of claims issued, there has been a noted increase in costs across the warranty value chain. Existing legacy systems are disparate or standalone, requiring manual interventions and hand-offs, with zero immutability of records.\u00a0 The onus is transferred to the customer to prove ownership and warranty coverage to OEMs via physical invoices, contributing to decreased customer satisfaction, duplication of work, and inability to handle counterfeiting and fraudulent claims. The dual combination of DPA + blockchain aims to target these inefficiencies by optimizing the warranty value chain.
