The fall of the Berlin Wall would end the Cold War and open up markets across the world. That very same month, Tim Berners-Lee would create the World Wide Web and usher in a new technological era of networked computing.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4b2d063 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4b2d063\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIt was a time of great optimism. Books like Francis Fukayama\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2NURKl7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The End of History<\/em><\/a>\u00a0predicted a capitalist, democratic utopia, while pundits gushed over the seemingly neverending parade of \u201ckiller apps,\u201d from email and e-commerce to social media and the mobile web. The onward march of history seemed unstoppable.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-81acc7e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"81acc7e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tToday, 30 years on, it\u2019s time to take stock and the picture is somewhat bleak. Instead of a global technological utopia, there are a number of worrying signs ranging from income inequality to the rise of popular authoritarianism. The fact is that technology and globalization have failed us. It\u2019s time to address some very real problems.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c2fd0b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9c2fd0b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>Where\u2019s The Productivity?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-14a7506 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"14a7506\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThink back, if you\u2019re old enough, to before this all started. Life before 1989 was certainly less modern prior to 1989, we didn\u2019t have mobile phones or the Internet, but for the most part it was fairly similar to today. We rode in cars and airplanes, watched TV and movies, and enjoyed the benefits of home appliances and air conditioners.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-27b5455 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"27b5455\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNow try to imagine what life was like in 1900, before electricity and internal combustion gained wide adoption. Even doing a simple task like cooking a meal or cleaning the house took hours of backbreaking labor to haul wood and water. While going back to living in the 1980s would involve some inconvenience, we would struggle to survive before 1920.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4f0352f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4f0352f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe productivity numbers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/external\/pubs\/ft\/wp\/2015\/wp15116.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">bear out this simple observation<\/a>. The widespread adoption of electricity and internal combustion led to a 50-year boom in productivity between 1920 and 1970. The digital revolution, on the other hand, created only an 8-year blip between 1996 and 2004. Even today, with artificial intelligence on the rise,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/regions-in-focus\/solving-the-productivity-puzzle\/pt-br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">productivity remains depressed<\/a>.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a7cb6d9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a7cb6d9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAt this point, we have to conclude that despite all the happy talk and grand promises of \u201cchanging the world,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2019\/lets-face-facts-the-digital-revolution-has-been-a-huge-disappointment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the digital revolution has been a huge disappointment<\/a>. While Silicon Valley has minted billionaires at record rates, digital technology has not made most of us measurably better off economically.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d9c4fc6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d9c4fc6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>Winners Taking All<\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a61e6c4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a61e6c4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe increase of globalization and the rise of digital commerce was supposed to be a democratizing force, increasing competition and breaking the institutional monopoly on power. Yet just the opposite seems to have happened, with a relatively small global elite grabbing more money and more power.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c19efa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4c19efa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tConsider market consolidation. An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/03\/is-lack-of-competition-strangling-the-u-s-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">analysis<\/a>\u00a0published in the\u00a0<em>Harvard Business Review<\/em>\u00a0showed that from airlines to hospitals to beer, market share is increasingly concentrated in just a handful of firms. As more expansive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2016\/03\/26\/the-problem-with-profits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">study<\/a>\u00a0of 900 industries conducted by\u00a0<em>The Economist<\/em>\u00a0found that two thirds have become more dominated by larger players.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b88eaea elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b88eaea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPerhaps not surprisingly, we see the same trends in households as we do with businesses. The OECD\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/social\/inequality.htm#income\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that income inequality is at its highest level in over 50 years. Even in emerging markets, where millions have been lifted out of poverty, most of the benefits have gone to a small few.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d925545 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d925545\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe consequences of growing inequality are concrete and stark. Social mobility has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/social-mobility-is-on-the-decline-and-with-it-american-dream-2017-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">declining<\/a>\u00a0in America for decades, transforming the \u201cland of opportunity\u201d into what is increasingly a caste system. Anxiety and depression are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/americans-are-in-the-midst-of-an-anxiety-epidemic-stress-increase\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rising to epidemic levels<\/a>. Life expectancy for the white working class is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/brookings-now\/2017\/03\/23\/working-class-white-americans-are-now-dying-in-middle-age-at-faster-rates-than-minority-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>actually declining<\/em><\/a>, mostly due to \u201cdeaths of despair\u201d due to drugs, alcohol and suicide. The overall picture is dim and seemingly getting worse.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-240e908 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"240e908\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>The Failure Of Freedom<\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c4acec elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9c4acec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tProbably the biggest source of optimism in the 1990s was the end of the Cold War. Capitalism was triumphant and many of the corrupt, authoritarian societies of the former Soviet Union began embracing democracy and markets. Expansion of NATO and the EU brought new hope to more than a hundred million people. China began to truly embrace markets as well.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed0da6a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ed0da6a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tI moved to Eastern Europe in the late 1990s and was able to observe this amazing transformation for myself. Living in Poland, it seemed like the entire country was advancing through a lens of time-lapse photography. Old, gray concrete building gave way to modern offices and apartment buildings. A prosperous middle class began to emerge.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-40f8486 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"40f8486\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tYet here as well things now seem to be going the other way. Anti-democratic regimes are winning elections across Europe while rising resentment against immigrant populations take hold throughout the western world. In America, we are increasingly mired in a growing constitutional crisis.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-614c859 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"614c859\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhat is perhaps most surprising about the retreat of democracy is that it is happening not in the midst of some sort of global depression, but during a period of relative prosperity and low unemployment. Nevertheless, positive economic data cannot mask the basic truth that a significant portion of the population feels that the system doesn\u2019t work for them.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-76d926a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"76d926a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong>It\u2019s Time To Start Taking Responsibility For A Messy World<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0220f22 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0220f22\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLooking back, it\u2019s hard to see how an era that began with such promise turned out so badly. Yes, we\u2019ve got cooler gadgets and streaming video. There have also been impressive gains in the developing world. Yet in so-called advanced economies, we seem to be worse off. It didn\u2019t have to turn out this way. Our current predicament is the result of choices that we made.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bdcdaf9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bdcdaf9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPut simply, we have the problems we have today because they are the problems we have chosen not to solve. While the achievements of technology and globalization are real, they have also left far too many behind. We focused on simple metrics like GDP and shareholder value, but unfortunately the world is not so elegant. It\u2019s a messy place and doesn\u2019t yield so easily to reductionist measures and strategies.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b8bdf40 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b8bdf40\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThere has, however, been some progress. The Business Roundtable, an influential group of almost 200 CEOs of America\u2019s largest companies,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessroundtable.org\/business-roundtable-redefines-the-purpose-of-a-corporation-to-promote-an-economy-that-serves-all-americans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently issued a statement<\/a>\u00a0that discarded the old notion that the sole purpose of a business is to provide value to shareholders. There are also a number of efforts underway to come up with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gross_National_Happiness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">broader measures of well being<\/a>\u00a0to replace GDP.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1b56523 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1b56523\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tYet we still need to learn an important lesson: technology alone will not save us. To solve complex challenges like inequality, climate change and the rise of authoritarianism we need to take a complex,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2017\/to-solve-complex-problems-you-need-a-networked-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">network based approach<\/a>. We need to build ecosystems of talent, technology and information.
