So as for dark data, it\u2019s all the information companies collect in their regular business processes, don\u2019t use, have no plans to use, but will never throw out.\u00a0It\u2019s web logs, visitor tracking data, surveillance footage, email correspondences from past employees, and so much more.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFor most companies, there is usually an enormous amount of dark data.\u00a0\u00a0According to Rahul Telang, who is the professor of information systems at\u00a0Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College<\/a>, its about 90% or so.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Then what are some of the best practices with dark data?\u00a0What can be done to get the most value from it?<\/p>\nWell, a first step is to use data classification so as to get a sense of what you are working with.\u00a0\u201cWe are seeing a number of vendors from the backup and recovery market segment come to market with solutions to help better do this and make it easier for re-use,\u201d said Christophe Bertrand, who is a Senior Analyst at\u00a0Enterprise Strategy Group<\/a>\u00a0(ESG).\u00a0\u201cTaking a holistic perspective is necessary, and leveraging existing processes that already move and manage data is critical.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
