You could say there is too much AI hype, you might as well say the tide always comes in. It is not a contentious thing to say, it just is. Maybe it would help if we re-defined it. Instead is saying AI means artificial intelligence, maybe we should return to an earlier definition, one untainted by Hollywood. Let\u2019s call it algorithmic intelligence, instead.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-abed3c9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"abed3c9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cArtificial intelligence is the application of algorithmic computation to large data sets,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/johnrgentry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Gentry<\/a>, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Business Development for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualinstruments.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Virtual Instruments<\/a>, a solutions provider delivering AIOps driven performance management for modern hybrid infrastructure.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f25d257 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f25d257\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h4 style=\"text-align: right\">\"What is AI? A simple guide to machine learning, neural networks, deep learning and random forests!\"<\/h4><\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0741ed2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0741ed2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAt its core, AI, or let\u2019s call it algorithmic intelligence, is more than statistical pattern matching. Gentry explained: \u201cYou may be able to supply statistical pattern matching to understand that event X occurred simultaneously with event Y.\u00a0 But what you\u2019re trying to understand is whether X caused Y. And that\u2019s where it takes a much more advanced application, not just the statistical analysis but the context which, in some cases, actually is a derivative of the machine learning.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c983c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9c983c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAnd that takes us to machine learning. Most AI advocates agree that machine learning is a form of AI. Gentry words it subtly different: \u201cAI is the application of various algorithms and mathematical approaches to statistical analysis and heuristics and predicting outcomes; machine learning underpins that \u2014 it\u2019s the ongoing analysis of patterns to understand normality and as a result is able to have highly accurate anomaly detection.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d3fb9a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d3fb9a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cAnd in many cases, it\u2019s the combination of those two things that actually yield the desired outcome. But where did the idea come from? But actually, the idea is far from new.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-797daf4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"797daf4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h4 style=\"text-align: right\">\u00a0\"Machine learning versus AI, and putting data science models into production\"<\/h4><\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b1dee41 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b1dee41\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.information-age.com\/data-science-models-into-production-ai-machine-learning-123482528\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Machine learning is becoming the phrase that data scientists hide from CVs, putting a data science model into production is the biggest data challenge, and companies are still not getting it. We spoke to a data expert on the state of data science, and why machine learning is a more appropriate phrase than AI<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-816da37 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"816da37\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cIf you look at some parallels in the industry, 10, 15-years ago, people were doing supply chain management and logistics by looking at massive spreadsheets and applying some simple algebra and calculus.\u201d For example, understanding where and when we needed bread. \u201cAnd that was transformed from a quarterly process to a monthly process because the compute power improved, and doing that on a daily basis. Now it\u2019s ongoing streaming analytics approach, where the business is now predictive, not just understanding or analysing the past but leveraging those patterns, doing simulation theory to then predict the future. And that\u2019s just now being applied to the field of IT, which is why you have this resurgence of AI and ML conversations.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ddae536 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ddae536\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJohn Gentry began life as an economist: he says that this discipline was one of the original users of what was then called: algorithmic intelligence. Economics involves the creation of complex models \u2014 whether it is the macroeconomy, or a specific ecosystem.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5fe096 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b5fe096\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGentry argues that economists, supply chain management and logistics professionals and the military have been using what was then called algorithmic intelligence for many years.
