But facial recognition holds so much more potential. Last year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/danielnewman\/2018\/09\/18\/facial-recognition-software-the-future-is-here\/#5afc7566299d\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/danielnewman\/2018\/09\/18\/facial-recognition-software-the-future-is-here\/#5afc7566299d\" class=\"broken_link\">I wrote about<\/a>\u00a0the massive opportunity that lies in facial recognition software, from helping to identify missing or exploited children to speeding up lines in the airport. Lately, however, the technology is hitting some roadblocks from both city governments and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/issues\/privacy-technology\/surveillance-technologies\/face-recognition-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/issues\/privacy-technology\/surveillance-technologies\/face-recognition-technology\">American Civil Liberties Union<\/a>. Their concerns: biometric data like facial recognition is just far too easy to hack\u2014and the consequences of its misuse could be incredibly dangerous.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74405c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74405c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNot long again, facial recognition software was the next hot thing. But as recently as July,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019\/07\/17\/oakland-california-facial-recognition-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019\/07\/17\/oakland-california-facial-recognition-ban\/\">Oakland, California<\/a>, became the third city to ban its government agencies from using facial recognition technology, following San Francisco, and Sommerville, Massachusetts. Experts expect\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/facial-recognition-bans-coming-soon-to-a-city-near-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/facial-recognition-bans-coming-soon-to-a-city-near-you\">more cities<\/a>\u00a0to follow suit. So, where does that leave the future of the technology?\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa62a16 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aa62a16\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEspecially as marketers trying to leverage facial recognition as a vehicle to improving customer experience. Is there still a way for us to use the technology? How can we tap into the benefits without crossing the line of personal privacy?\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-502fb43 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"502fb43\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-fe7807e\" data-id=\"fe7807e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b917ab4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b917ab4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2><b>Security\u2014and Regulation\u2014are Lacking\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-70d80c1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"70d80c1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIf there is one thing experts agree on, it\u2019s that there\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90372734\/due-to-weak-oversight-we-dont-really-know-how-tech-companies-are-using-facial-recognition-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90372734\/due-to-weak-oversight-we-dont-really-know-how-tech-companies-are-using-facial-recognition-data\" class=\"broken_link\">is not sufficient oversight or security<\/a>\u00a0to keep biometric data obtained from facial recognition software safe. For one, it\u2019s unclear how companies gathering the data will be using and storing it. Secondly, the mere existence of databases full of personal biometric data are gaining lots of attention from sophisticated hackers, making it even more difficult to keep these \u201choneypots of data\u201d secure.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d2fa63 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6d2fa63\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhat are the consequences? Unlike hacking into a system and stealing someone\u2019s credit card number of phone number, the hacking of facial recognition and other biometric data is even more dangerous. Consider how easy it would be to steal someone\u2019s identity when you have their face\u2014and how difficult it would be for the victim of identity theft to get their identity back. Access to biometric data could also make it easier for stalkers and other predators to gain access to private information that could be detrimental to people\u2019s lives.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0d702ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0d702ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBrands already have to deal with the fallout from credit card information being stolen, imagine dealing with the fallout of a biometric database being hacked. Is it worth the risk?\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4689a44 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4689a44\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2><b>Technology Isn\u2019t Precise<\/b><\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c9bb48 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c9bb48\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAnother issue with facial recognition software is that it is not always accurate. When used for law enforcement purposes, for instance, this could lead to false arrests on an epic scale. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandoweekly.com\/Blogs\/archives\/2019\/07\/18\/orlando-cancels-amazon-rekognition-capping-15-months-of-glitches-and-controversy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.orlandoweekly.com\/Blogs\/archives\/2019\/07\/18\/orlando-cancels-amazon-rekognition-capping-15-months-of-glitches-and-controversy\">city of Orlando<\/a>\u00a0recently canceled its pilot partnership with Amazon\u2019s Rekognition program due to concerns about its accuracy. The pilot had used cameras at the police department headquarters, downtown, and at a community rec center to automatically identify and track suspects in real time. The ACLU had previously called the software out for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandoweekly.com\/Blogs\/archives\/2019\/01\/25\/amazons-rekognition-software-sucks-at-detecting-dark-skinned-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.orlandoweekly.com\/Blogs\/archives\/2019\/01\/25\/amazons-rekognition-software-sucks-at-detecting-dark-skinned-women\">misidentifying dark-skilled women<\/a>\u00a0more than light-skinned women.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d53a81f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d53a81f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2><b>It Improves CX but is it an Invasion of Privacy?<\/b><\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f058926 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f058926\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhile\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90372734\/due-to-weak-oversight-we-dont-really-know-how-tech-companies-are-using-facial-recognition-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90372734\/due-to-weak-oversight-we-dont-really-know-how-tech-companies-are-using-facial-recognition-data\" class=\"broken_link\">Fenway Park<\/a>\u00a0says it\u2019s using facial recognition to enhance fan experience through things like Fast Pass, questions remain regarding how the data gained from facial recognition software will be bought and sold on the retail market. Sure, the fan experience and general CX has improved, but what are the terms of service? How does a fan opt-out if they want? How can companies guarantee people that their data won\u2019t be sold on a third-party market? For instance, will Fenway Park sell the data it collects to local eateries and retailers so that they can better market to its users? Or will something else happen to the data? It\u2019s just too early to know the implications.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d9ebc3f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d9ebc3f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2><b>The Opportunities are Huge<\/b><\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-de15bde elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"de15bde\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFacial recognition software is advancing far more quickly than regulation can handle it. As we know, once the techno-cat is out of the bag, it\u2019s impossible to put it back in. For me, this is a tough issue. There are so many amazing CX opportunities for companies to tap into. Imagine walking into your favorite store and being greeted by name. What if that store could also pull up your purchase history so they could better customize your in-store experience. That would be amazing!\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-188a8c2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"188a8c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhat about being able to use facial recognition or eye-tracking software to get better analytics on your marketing campaigns. Now we see how many people opened an email or how many times an ad appeared on a Facebook page, but what if we could say for certain where someone stopped reading or where we lost their attention. You could super charge your ads and create campaigns that you know will be effective. The iPhone X is already equipped the infrared technology to scan faces and I bet it\u2019s only a matter of time before all of our major devices have the same technology.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c07d2fe elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c07d2fe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJust like how stores now use our location data, users could be asked if they want to share this infrared data. Something that simple could give users the ability to opt-out if they want, but also give marketers invaluable data that will change the customer experience forever. That is the type of opportunity with facial recognition that excites me.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e56ef37 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e56ef37\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tYes, there are still scary aspects to this technology, but I think the promise is huge. Before the technology is unleashed into the corporate world, companies need to fully understand it. They also need to be able to explain to users exactly what data they are looking at, what information is being stored and how it\u2019s being used.
