Rather than having a central administrator like a traditional database, (think banks, governments &amp; accountants), distributed ledgers have a system of synchronized databases that provide an auditable history of information and are visible to anyone within the network. Distributed ledgers rely on similar principles of consensus to a blockchain.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e10456a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e10456a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2 id=\"461b\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Blockchain<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-db4c839 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"db4c839\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"e51a\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Although distributed ledger technology and blockchain share the same conceptual origin and purpose \u2014 a decentralized database or log of records, they are not exactly the same.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8cd5\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Born out of the Bitcoin cryptocurrency in 2008, a blockchain is a specific type of distributed ledger with a distinct set of features or operational processes. Unlike other distributed ledgers, blockchains package transactions or sets of data into cryptographic hash-linked blocks in a sequential chain. They use a consensus system (e.g., Proof of Work) to determine how new blocks get added to the chain-of-blocks, unlike distributed ledgers which do not require such a chain.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a75e\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">To summarize, a blockchain is a decentralized database which logs records by grouping transactions (data) into blocks. These records are unchangeable, append-only and can be used to create and document a history of lots of different things.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-18a1357 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"18a1357\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e39d096\" data-id=\"e39d096\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dfc78cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dfc78cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote>\u201cEvery blockchain is a distributed ledger, but not every distributed ledger is a blockchain. Blockchains can theoretically be used in several ways for many kinds of records way beyond monetary transactions. Anything that needs to be immutably recorded like health-care related records, or contracts, and much more.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9478bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f9478bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2 id=\"1bb3\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What are the different types of blockchains<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9d06ef4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9d06ef4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"9c65\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Blockchains come in different shapes and sizes. Here\u2019s a high-level overview.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e612db0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e612db0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3 id=\"93d9\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Single-use public blockchains<\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a505bfb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a505bfb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"1560\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This would be like the Bitcoin public blockchain network which is secured by a costly albeit effective mining process. The use case\/s for Bitcoin is payments and value storage.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-992a8fb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"992a8fb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3 id=\"4fc0\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Multi-use public blockchains<\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f55cd4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9f55cd4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"dcdc\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This could be like Ethereum. The major difference between the Bitcoin, single-use blockchain and the Ethereum, multi-use blockchain is their purpose and capabilities. Whereas Bitcoin provides one specific function, peer-to-peer electronic Bitcoin payments, Ethereum offers a platform that enables developers to build and deploy other decentralized applications \u2014 like Bitcoin, for example. Here, you get a public network but also a developer network where developers can write smart contracts and all sorts of use cases.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-90a12b2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"90a12b2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3 id=\"aaa1\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Enterprise blockchains<\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-198c602 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"198c602\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"20a3\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">No public network in this case but rather an invite-only, permissioned private network that can also feature a developer network. An enterprise blockchain can be set up in many ways, for example, a consortium of companies in specific industries like insurance, banking, or healthcare.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d9458ca elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d9458ca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote>\u201cThink of an enterprise blockchain as executing transactions that track assets as they change hands among organizations \u2014 assets that can be tangible, such as physical goods or a contract document, or intangible, such as digital use rights.\u201d \u2014 Chris Murphy<\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e732484 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e732484\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"d0c6\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Because there is no need to secure a public network, much of the computational power required to reach consensus in public blockchains can be reduced resulting in faster transactions and enhanced scalability. It\u2019s in this enterprise blockchain space where the more pressing questions about whether a blockchain adds value or is needed at all start to emerge.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3cea6e0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3cea6e0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2 id=\"843a\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What should a business use? Blockchain or Distributed Ledger?<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-69a99d6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"69a99d6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"ef30\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This is a hard question to answer without specific facts and business needs at hand. However, it\u2019s possible to present the most optimum theoretical scenarios as to when a blockchain or other type of distributed ledger could be needed.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b76d3fc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b76d3fc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2 id=\"b65a\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The Blockchain- DLT Spectrum<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ce2210 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5ce2210\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"0df6\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Andreas Wallendahl of ConsenSys explains this nicely by placing blockchain and distributed ledgers on a spectrum. On the one side, you have public blockchains. These have many nodes, are decentralized and can be used by anyone in the world. At the other end, you have a single database with one node, and next to that, as you move a little toward the middle of the spectrum, a database shared between just two or three nodes or a distributed ledger.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a8161e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1a8161e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"40c7\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As you can see, there is a big continuum on this spectrum from a single node database with one party to what is essentially a public database that anyone, anywhere in the world can access. As you may quickly realize, using a public blockchain makes little sense for the vast majority of business use cases.<\/p>\n<p id=\"001d\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The reality is that almost all businesses will either only need data for themselves, which means that a simple database will usually suffice or they may need to share data with a few other parties which can be handled by a distributed ledger. If you can solve your business\u2019 needs using a central database a blockchain is not a viable option.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4041\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Blockchains become more relevant when multiple businesses need to maintain and share data in a situation where trust is an issue. It may also be applicable in cases where reliance on a central party to store and validate transaction data is not optimal or where there is a requirement for records to be immutable.
