{"id":1973,"date":"2019-09-25T02:07:38","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T02:07:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kusuaks7\/?p=1578"},"modified":"2024-03-26T08:50:20","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T08:50:20","slug":"is-dataops-the-next-big-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/bigdata-cloud\/is-dataops-the-next-big-thing\/","title":{"rendered":"Is DataOps the next big thing?"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"1973\" class=\"elementor elementor-1973\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1d5c6ddd elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1d5c6ddd\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-27bb9c8d\" data-id=\"27bb9c8d\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2dc14206 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2dc14206\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAfter watching application teams, security teams and operations teams get the -Ops treatment, data engineering teams are now getting their own process ending in -Ops.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7819531 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7819531\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhile still in its very early days, data engineers are beginning to embrace DataOps practices.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd32b62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dd32b62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGartner defines DataOps as \u201ca collaborative data manager practice, really focused on improving communication, integration, and automation of data flow between managers and consumers of data within an organization,\u201d explained Nick Heudecker, an analyst at Gartner and lead author of Gartner\u2019s Innovation Insight piece on DataOps.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-503ff3e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"503ff3e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDataOps is first and foremost a people-driven practice, rather than a technology-oriented one. \u201cYou cannot buy your way into DataOps,\u201d Heudecker said.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24b9195 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"24b9195\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nMichele Goetz, a principal analyst at the research firm Forrester, explained that DataOps is like the DevOps version of anything to do with data engineering. \u201cAnything that requires somebody with data expertise from a technical perspective falls into this DataOps category,\u201d she said. \u201cWhy we say it\u2019s like a facet of DevOps is because it operates under the same model as continuous development using agile methods, just like DevOps does.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fc077cc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fc077cc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nDataOps aims to eliminate some of the problems caused by miscommunications between developers and stakeholders. Often, when someone in an organization makes a request for a new data set or new report, there is a lack of communication between the person requesting and whoever will follow through on that request. For example, someone may make a request, an engineer will deliver what they believe is what is needed, and when the requesters receives it they are disappointed that it\u2019s not what they asked for, Heudecker explained. This can result in increased frustration and missed deadlines, he explained.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39e5d6f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"39e5d6f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nBy getting stakeholders involved throughout the process, some of those headaches may be avoided. \u201c[CIOs] really want to figure out how do they get less friction in their companies around data, which everybody\u2019s asking for today,\u201d said Heudecker.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8ae7cf5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8ae7cf5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAnother potential benefit of DataOps is improved data utilization, Heudecker explained. According to Heudecker, these are some of the questions that organizations may start to ask themselves:\n<ul>\n \t<li>\u201cCan I use the data that\u2019s coming into my organization faster?<\/li>\n \t<li>Are things less brittle?<\/li>\n \t<li>Can things be more reliable?<\/li>\n \t<li>Can I react to changes in data schemas faster?<\/li>\n \t<li>Is there a better understanding of what data represents and what data means?<\/li>\n \t<li>Can I get faster time to market for the data assets I have?<\/li>\n \t<li>Can I govern things more adequately within my company because there\u2019s a better understanding of what that data actually represents?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a01c1cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a01c1cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAccording to Goetz, for companies that have been journeying down the path of \u201ctightening the bolts\u201d of what is needed from a data perspective and how that supports digital and other advanced analytics strategies, it is clear that they need an operating model that allows development around data to fit into their existing solution development track. This enables them to have data experts on the same team as the rest of the DevOps Scrum teams, she explained.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1b7853a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1b7853a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOrganizations that are less mature in their data operations tend to still think in terms of executing on data from a data architecture perspective. In addition, a lot of those less mature companies do not handle data in-house, but will outsource it to systems integrators and will take a project-oriented waterfall approach, Goetz explained.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2119713 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2119713\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe companies that are already getting DataOps right are typically going to be the ones that already have a DevOps practice in place for their solution development, whether it\u2019s on the application or automation side, Goetz explained. Those more advanced companies also tend to have a model for portfolio management and business architecture that aligns to continuous development. \u201cThey\u2019re recognizing there is an opportunity to better fit into the way that you operate around development with those teams so that data doesn\u2019t get left behind and isn\u2019t building up technical debt,\u201d she said.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5afb852 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5afb852\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cIt\u2019s really fascinating to see how organizations act when the lightbulb goes off and they make the equivalency between DataOps and DevOps,\u201d said Goetz. \u201cIt\u2019s like all those barriers start to fall away because they typically have something that\u2019s been in place that they\u2019re able to now fit into instead of fight against.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-460694b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"460694b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><b>Having a DevOps structure in place can ensure DataOps success<\/b><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c23c2c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7c23c2c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAccording to Goetz, companies that have not at least gone through or adopted some Agile methodologies will have a hard time adopting DataOps.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c27ea7f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c27ea7f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGoetz explained that over the years, she has seen companies evolve and try to switch from waterfall to Agile. They tend to struggle and make mistakes along the way, at least at first. Unless a company has some of those competencies, they will likely struggle. \u201cSo I think there\u2019s definitely some foundations that make it easier to get started in one end of the company,\u201d said Goetz.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46dbbf1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"46dbbf1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><b>DataOps is probably here to stay, though it will be a while before it is widely adopted<\/b><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6c2eb67 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6c2eb67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDataOps is still in the very early stages, so it\u2019s hard to predict where it will go in the future, or even if it will reach wide adoption or fizzle out, Heudecker explained. However, even if DataOps isn\u2019t here to stay, it will still have some positive lasting effects, Heudecker said. \u201cIf it gets companies thinking differently about how they collaborate around data, that\u2019s a good thing,\u201d said Heudecker. \u201cEven if it is a short-term hype and then it kind of fizzles out after a while, companies internalize some of the principles or ideas around the topic, and that\u2019s good.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f76461b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f76461b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGoetz doesn\u2019t see DataOps going away anytime soon. In fact, she said that it is actually accelerating in terms of interest and adoption. \u00a0The level of interest will vary from company to company, but the groundswell is definitely there, she explained.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a454587 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a454587\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn fact, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexla.com\/data-operations-survey-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2018 survey<\/a>\u00a0from data company Nexla and research firm Pulse Q&amp;A revealed that 73 percent of organizations were investing in DataOps last year.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a2bd39e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a2bd39e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nThe reason she doesn\u2019t see it going away is that one of the catalysts for DataOps is that organizations are recognizing that they don\u2019t just need to build technical capabilities and install applications anymore. In today\u2019s world, organizations are building their own digital foundations, products, and digital business. According to Goetz, those things require a different way of development and going to market.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-035a5e0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"035a5e0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201c[Those companies] looked at where DevOps came from,\u201d Goetz said. \u201cIt came from the product companies, particularly the technology product companies. And they have been successful. And you also see integrators redesigning their development practices around DevOps. So there\u2019s just so much momentum behind it. And there\u2019s better results coming out of these practices in general that I don\u2019t see it going away.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-044c2f4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"044c2f4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><b>It may be too early to make any predictions around DataOps<\/b><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-98f6a13 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"98f6a13\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEven though it\u2019s still too early to start seeing any obvious trends, Heudecker has still seen a lot of interest in the topic. Right now it is very vendor-led, he said, but there has been a lot of interest from organizations, too. In particular, companies are interested in learning exactly what it is and whether or not it will benefit them.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a33a9c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a33a9c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGoing forward, it will probably be the organizations themselves, not vendors, who will define the best practices, Heudecker explained.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d7715f2 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d7715f2\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-cf5eb3d\" data-id=\"cf5eb3d\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-390621b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"390621b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOrganizations trying DataOps out are going to be \u201cleading on what those best practices are and how you create a center of excellence around that,\u201d said Goetz.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b4a5c62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b4a5c62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOne trend that Goetz has already seen is that companies are approaching DataOps from the AI side of things. Algorithms have advanced and a lot of the existing AI models have gotten quite good at classifying, categorizing, and doing other data preparation work. And data scientists have gotten good at finding analytics functions and machine learning to execute on their data. They don\u2019t even necessarily have to be data scientists because they don\u2019t have to manipulate the model to optimize it. Things are a bit more premade, and vendor tooling is enabling the citizen data scientist. \u201cYou don\u2019t always need to have data science skills to take advantage of a data science model or machine learning model,\u201d Goetz explained.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ce8f14 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2ce8f14\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAnother trend she has seen is that the role of architects will likely change in DataOps structures. Architects have historically been ignored because developers don\u2019t want someone telling them what to develop; they just want to sit down and make it. Often, architects are seen as something that will slow teams down and push them into more of a waterfall structure.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-df733bb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"df733bb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nBut according to Goetz, in stronger Agile practices, architecture actually plays a significant role because it helps define the vision and patterns.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f2990ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f2990ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><b>The role of data governance<\/b><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd5ddaa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dd5ddaa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMany of the regulations that are popping up around governance, such as Europe\u2019s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California\u2019s Consumer Privacy Act, make handling information and governing it mandatory \u00a0requirements for what you are going to develop, Goetz explained.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-65febee elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"65febee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs a result of these new regulations, we are going to start see that privacy and security from a governance perspective aren\u2019t just going to be handled at the CISO level or in data governance teams.
