The visualization of information has been the support of many types of analysis, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_network_analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Social Network Analysis<\/a>. For decades, visual representations have helped researchers, analysts and enterprises derive insights from their data.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ba41\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Visualization tools represent an important bridge between graph data and analysts. It helps surface information and insights leading to the understanding of a situation, or the solving of a problem.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18f7b19 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"18f7b19\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"7639\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">While it\u2019s easy to read and comprehend non-graph data in a tabular format such as a spreadsheet, you will probably miss valuable information if you try to analyze connected data the same way. Representing connected data in tables is not intuitive and often hides the connections in which lies the value.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2983\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Graph visualization tools turn connected data into graphical network representations that\u00a0<strong>take advantage of the human brain proficiency to recognize visual patterns<\/strong>\u00a0and more pattern variations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ceca\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In the field of graph theory and network science, researchers started to imagine graph analysis and visualization tools as early as 1996 with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mrvar.fdv.uni-lj.si\/pajek\/history.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pajek<\/a>\u00a0project. Even though these applications have long been confined to the field of research, it was the birth of computer tools for graph visualization.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c40e71b elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"c40e71b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/3266\/1*gAJafhALbTFeOIc8MqIzrQ.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9d0d9eb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9d0d9eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 11px;\">The pajek project, initiated in 1996<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ddac830 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ddac830\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h1 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h1 id=\"651e\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Visualization speeds up data analysis<\/h1><\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e3eb854 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e3eb854\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"5cd6\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">There is a reason researchers started to develop these tools. Graph visualization\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/linkurio.us\/blog\/why-graph-visualization-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brings many advantages<\/a>\u00a0to the analysis of graph data. When you apply visualization methods to data analysis,\u00a0<strong>you are more likely to cut the time spent looking for information<\/strong>\u00a0because:<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c35766 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c35766\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n \t<li id=\"cb96\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">You have a greater ability to recognize trends &amp; patterns.<\/li>\n \t<li id=\"9156\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">You can digest larger amounts of data more easily.<\/li>\n \t<li id=\"3d8f\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">You will compare situations or scenarios more easily.<\/li>\n \t<li id=\"6ebe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And in addition, it will be easier to share and explain your findings through a visual medium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fa4d0e2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fa4d0e2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"26c9\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Combined with the capabilities brought by computer machines, these advantages opened new doors for analysts seeking information in large volumes of data. It is also the reason\u00a0<strong>graph visualization solutions are complementary<\/strong>\u00a0to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@Elise_Deux\/the-graphtech-ecosystem-2019-part-2-graph-analytics-8ca5af4f83a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">graph analytics<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@Elise_Deux\/the-graphtech-ecosystem-2019-part-1-graph-databases-c7c2f8a5e6bd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">graph databases tools<\/a>\u00a0we discussed in the previous articles.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f094d40 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f094d40\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"fcda\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Once data is stored and calculations are done, end-users need an intelligible way to process and make sense of the data. And graph visualization tools are useful in many scenarios. Most of the tools we are about to present can be plugged directly to database and analytics systems to further the analysis of graph data.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e55045d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e55045d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h1 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h1 id=\"d35c\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Graph visualization libraries and toolkits<\/h1><\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-026a1c2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"026a1c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"c752\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Among the common tools available today to visualize graph data are libraries and toolkit. These libraries allow you to build custom visualization application adjusted to your needs: from a basic graph layout displaying data in your browser, to an advanced application embedding a full panel of graph data customization and analysis features. They do require the knowledge of programming languages, or imply that you have development resources available.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6ccaef1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"6ccaef1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1444\/0*xB0DZqSr5h-48Lk8\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a224739 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a224739\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The graph visualization libraries and toolkit ecosystem<\/p>\n<p id=\"6721\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The catalog is wide<em>\u00a0[you\u2019ll find the list at the end of this story]<\/em>, with plenty of choices depending on your favorite language, license requirement, budget or project needs. In the open-source world, some libraries offer many possibilities for data visualization, including graph, or network, representations. It\u2019s the case of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/d3js.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D3.js<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/visjs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vis.js<\/a>\u00a0for instance that let you choose among different data representation formats.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2d0dc57 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2d0dc57\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"aaa1\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Other libraries solely focus on\u00a0<strong>graph representations<\/strong>\u00a0of data, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/js.cytoscape.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cytoscape.js<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sigmajs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sigma.js<\/a>. Usually, these libraries provide a more features than the generalist ones. There are libraries in Java such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/graphstream-project.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GraphStream<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jung.sourceforge.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jung<\/a>, or in Python, with packages like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nodebox.net\/code\/index.php\/Graph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NodeBox Graph<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bec5ee6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bec5ee6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"4b25\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">You will also find\u00a0<strong>commercial graph visualization<\/strong>\u00a0libraries such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yworks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">yFiles from yWorks,\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cambridge-intelligence.com\/keylines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keylines<\/a>\u00a0from Cambridge Intelligence,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsawyer.com\/perspectives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Sawyer Perspectives<\/a>\u00a0from Tom Sawyer Software, or our own solution\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ogma.linkurio.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ogma<\/a>. The commercial libraries have the advantage of guaranteeing continuous technical support and advanced performances.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-607d4be elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"607d4be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h1 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h1 id=\"2072\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Graph visualization software and web applications<\/h1><\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0970e5a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0970e5a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2 id=\"7995\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Research applications<\/h2>\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f241b33 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f241b33\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"54f3\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">There are other solutions which do not require any development. These solutions are either,<strong>\u00a0Saas, or on-premise software and web applications<\/strong>. As we mentioned earlier, the first off-the-shelf solutions spawn from the work of network theory researchers. After Pajek, other solutions were released, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.netminer.com\/product\/overview.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NetMiner<\/a>in 2001, a commercial software for exploratory analysis and visualization of large networks data. In the same line, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gephi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gephi software<\/a>, created in 2008, brought a powerful open source tool to many researchers in the field of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_network_analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Social Network Analysis<\/a>\u00a0and played a key role in democratizing graph visualization methods.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bdb4148 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bdb4148\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"f793\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Other\u00a0<strong>research projects<\/strong>\u00a0emerged, as web technologies simplified their creation. For instance,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hdlab.stanford.edu\/palladio\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Palladio<\/a>, a graph visualization web application for history researchers was created in 2013. More recently in 2016, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/osome.iuni.iu.edu\/tools\/networks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research project OSoMe<\/a>\u00a0(the Observatory on Social Media) released an online graph visualization application to study the spread of information and misinformation on social media.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7330\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">However, graph visualization is no longer the preserve of the academic and research worlds. Others understood the potential of graph visualization and how such tools could help organizations and businesses\u00a0<strong>in other fields:<\/strong>\u00a0network management, financial crime investigation, cyber-security, healthcare development, and much more. i2 Limited\u2019s products were precursors in the field.
