New market studies with ever-larger financial projections are published every semester. In this article, I propose to present the current market, if not exhaustively, at least as well as possible. The graph database management systems (GDBMS) are driving the ecosystem. They are its main actors. These systems help organizations tackle the technical challenges of storing complex connected data and extracting insights from very large datasets.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f71df1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0f71df1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h1 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h1 id=\"80b0\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Shaping the market<\/h1><\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-62868d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"62868d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"3dc6\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Since the 1960s, network models have existed in the world of databases, but the use of graph structures remained confined to the academic world. The performances and the models were not yet optimal, and we had to wait until the 2000s and the introduction of ACID graph databases to see<strong>\u00a0a larger-scale adoption<\/strong>. From then, graph databases started to appear as a legit business solution to address some of the shortcomings of relational systems.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4ec1\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Native systems, built specifically for storing graph-like data, and non-native systems, with a different primary data-model (for example relational or other NoSQL databases), compose the market. The first version of the native graph database was launched in 2010, proposing a dual commercial and open source edition for developers to experiment with graphs. The company has since gained a lot of customers and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neo4j.com\/news\/neo4j-closes-80m-series-e-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raised more than $150 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fab2a0a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fab2a0a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"1e26\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In the open-source community, JanusGraph\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.datanami.com\/2017\/01\/13\/janusgraph-picks-titandb-left-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">took over the Titan project,<\/a>whose parent company was acquired in 2015 by DataStax. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/janusgraph.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JanusGraph project<\/a>\u00a0now proposes a distributed, open-source graph database that has been gaining a lot of interest lately.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dgraph.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DGraph<\/a>\u00a0is another open source project, written in Go, that released a production-ready version in 2017 while raising\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/12\/19\/dgraph-raises-3m-for-its-open-source-distributed-graph-database-hits-1-0-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$3 million in seed funding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d8b2\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Other solutions include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stardog.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stardog<\/a>, the RDF triple store for knowledge graph, or the recently launched\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tigergraph.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TigerGraph<\/a>\u00a0(formerly known as GraphSQL). The commercial systems\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.objectivity.com\/products\/infinitegraph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">InfiniteGraph<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sparsity-technologies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sparksee<\/a>\u00a0have now been around for a while. Other open source systems such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hypergraphdb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">HypergraphDB<\/a>\u00a0propose databases based on directed hypergraphs.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1fe3a01 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1fe3a01\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h1 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h1 id=\"7768\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Multi-model databases and hybrid systems<\/h1><\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9fb634e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9fb634e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"844e\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Following the success of NoSQL models, multi-model databases emerged as an answer to the complexity that the multiplication of siloed systems was creating. These databases are designed to support various data types, handling in one single data store various models such as document, key-value, RDF and graphs. They are particularly convenient if you need to work with multiple data types but want to avoid the operational complexity of managing various silos.<\/p>\n<p id=\"aed4\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Among the native multi-model databases that include graph as a supported model, we can name\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arangodb.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ArangoDB<\/a>. This open-source multi-model database was released in 2011 and supports three data models: key\/value, documents and graphs.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/cosmos-db\/introduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cosmos DB<\/a>\u00a0is Microsoft Azure\u2019s latest addition to the multi-model landscape. Launched in 2017, this distributed cloud database supports four data types: key-value, document, column family and graph.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.datastax.com\/products\/datastax-enterprise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DataStax Enterprise<\/a>\u00a0is also a distributed cloud database, built on top of the open source NoSQL Apache Cassandra system. The system supports column family, documents, key-value, and graph since the addition of DataStax Enterprise Graph in 2016. Finally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marklogic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MarkLogic\u00a0<\/a>is a historical stakeholder who added RDF triples support to its existing supported document model back in 2013.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a43a\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Another strong signal of market traction was the evolution of the database main players\u2019 strategy. Over the last few years, we saw traditional relational store heavyweights add graph capabilities to their systems through dedicated APIs. In 2012, IBM added a NoSQL graph store,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/support\/knowledgecenter\/en\/SSEPGG_10.1.0\/com.ibm.db2.luw.wn.doc\/doc\/c0060011.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DB2-RDF\u00a0<\/a>to its database. One year later, Oracle rebranded its database graph option to Oracle Spatial and Graph, known today as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/database\/database-technologies\/bigdata-spatialandgraph\/overview\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oracle Big Data Spatial and Graph<\/a>.
