The first letter \u2014 artificial \u2014 is about right. As for the second word \u2014 well, there is nothing intelligent about it. Take semantics as an example, there is nothing remotely intelligent, or otherwise, about artificial technology understanding the meaning in sentences, paragraphs and books for the simple reason, it is unremittingly bad at it.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1bab226 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1bab226\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBut could this be about to change? Recently, we sat down with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hadsed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hadayat Seddiqi<\/a>, director of machine learning at legal tech company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.incloudcounsel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">InCloudCounsel<\/a>. He reckons that AI is close to reaching an understanding of semantics as the next step in its evolution. We asked: \u201cwhen are we likely to reach this milestone?\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-669862f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"669862f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSEO: if you are a writer, who takes pride in your writing, in applying your lexicon to express an idea without repetition, then you probably hate SEO. If you like to make a complex argument, that can only really be expressed over a sentence, a chapter, an article or even a book, then SEO, because of the way it makes you dumb arguments down into two or three or four words, such as AI and understanding semantics, is the enemy. Sites and applications from industry giants such as Google and Facebook are constantly using AI in order to improve their user experience and provide more efficient services. Many programs such as chatbots are made possible through the use of natural language processing or NLP. In turn this creates massive value in natural language processing.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-63fdc63 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"63fdc63\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSo, in the story of AI enabling understanding of semantics, what is the next step in its evolution and when are we likely to reach this milestone?\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8eb1199 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8eb1199\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSeddiqi says: \u201cReaching semantic understanding in AI will require several key milestones. It\u2019s helpful to think in terms of the iterative progress leading us to semantic understanding in AI and what each milestone means.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-09218bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"09218bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cA previous milestone,\u201d says Seddiqi is Word Vectors: \u201cLet\u2019s frame this milestone in terms of a common use case that most people are familiar with: search functionality on a computer. Everyone has used Ctrl+F\/Command+F to find something on their system, which finds what you\u2019re looking for by matching keywords exactly. Moreover, using a search engine such as Google to find information will include a \u2018spellcheck\u2019 component to address potential misspelling.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19d0613 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19d0613\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\u201cBut what about words that look very different but mean similar things? Around 2013, the AI community found an efficient way to model this called \u2018word vectors\u2019. You can do fun word algebra stuff, like King + Woman will give you Queen. But what if your idea requires an entire sentence to express? That is the next milestone, which we\u2019re arriving at thanks to a big push in research last year.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5a3b49d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5a3b49d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cThe idea is that you can take a sentence, encode it into a sentence (or thought) vector and then find similar sentence vectors. If encoded well, your search function can find very different looking sentences that express the same idea.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7759278 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7759278\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cIt\u2019s not unreasonable to say this technology will mature within the next few years, based on current research progress.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-21cbe15 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"21cbe15\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2>Future milestones: AI understanding beyond sentences<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2085575 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2085575\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cThere is a clear pattern of hierarchy emerging in the progression of this technology. We\u2019re getting close to AI understanding ideas at a sentence level using similar techniques from the word level and scaling them up. This opens up exciting applications for AI understanding ideas requiring paragraphs, entire documents, or even entire books.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-29b7165 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"29b7165\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cAI\u2019s recent leap to understanding sentences from words has not been trivial as the ability to do so has largely been constrained by dataset size and computational power. Our ability to create models to handle these bigger problems has so far been shown to hinge on these two resource constraints.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-be8a9f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"be8a9f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cAs these costs decline from advancements in AI hardware, we will see ourselves getting closer to models that understand larger collections of text.
