Here was a computer that could not only understand spoken questions, but answer them faster and more accurately than the best human players. Nobody had ever seen anything even remotely like it before.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5686790 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5686790\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tToday, less than a decade later, artificial intelligence has been transformed from the incredible to something approaching the mundane. Not only do we have capabilities that are similar to the original Watson system on our phones, we can access top-notch resources from a number of companies, often for free.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-81d4299 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"81d4299\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tYet probably the biggest difference from those early days of Watson is how AI has evolved from a system to an ecosystem. Much like the evolution from mainframes to personal computers, companies now can access different components to build a system designed specifically for their business. That\u2019s how a technology becomes transformational.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-373d67c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"373d67c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong><u>Acquiring Data Resources<\/u><\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-29636b3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"29636b3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhat makes artificial intelligence different than earlier technologies is that the system learns as data is fed into it. So data is the fuel that makes the whole thing work. That\u2019s why Josh Sutton, CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agorai.ai\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Agorai<\/a>, a platform that helps companies build AI applications for their business, calls data, \u201cmost valuable business asset that does not reside on a balance sheet.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-771efad elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"771efad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cThe first thing I suggest a company asks is \u2018what value can I create with AI?\u2019\u201d Sutton told me.\u00a0\u201cFrom there, you can figure out what data you need to drive those applications, what data assets you already have, what you can generate and what you need to buy. I would also look at what data I have that may be valuable to others, but not of strategic value to me, that I can use to generate a revenue stream.\u201c\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd7e152 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cd7e152\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nAdditionally, he points out that because AI algorithms can adapt the way the application works to the data you feed it, these technologies are much more accessible to small and medium sized businesses who can\u2019t afford expensive consultants to customize an entire system for them.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-228f882 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"228f882\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cIn healthcare, for example, where much of the data is protected, it\u2019s very difficult to access the data we need to create a good model using machine learning. However, new techniques like synthetic data generation allow us sidestep that problem so we can build systems that automate processes and improve performance\u201d he told me.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-80a7a6a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"80a7a6a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong><u>Advancing Both Software And Hardware<\/u><\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48f769d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"48f769d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2FqWcUS\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Master Algorithm<\/em><\/a>, the renowned machine learning researcher\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pedro_Domingos\" rel=\"noopener\">Pedro Domingos<\/a>\u00a0explains that there are five basic machine learning approaches, including neural networks, vector machines, genetic algorithms and inductive learning algorithms. IBM\u2019s Watson, in fact, combined a number of these approaches to beat human contestants on\u00a0<em>Jeopardy!<\/em>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a845d0c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a845d0c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSince 2011, in part because of the excitement that Watson generated, these approaches have advanced dramatically. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2016\/how-google-innovates\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Google\u2019s Brain project<\/a>\u00a0was able to significantly increase the number of layers in a neural network system, which made its algorithms much more accurate.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-76df072 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"76df072\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nAnother important area of advancement is in hardware. The chipmaker Nvidia\u2019s expertise in graphics processors has helped it dominate the market for AI chips. Google and Microsoft are creating their own chips specifically designed to run their algorithms. IBM developed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2016\/ibm-has-created-a-revolutionary-new-model-for-computing-the-human-brain\/\" rel=\"noopener\">neuromorphic chips<\/a>\u00a0which mimic the design of the human brain which, because they use very little power, have the potential to bring AI capabilities to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edge_computing\" rel=\"noopener\">edge computing<\/a>.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6427e3d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6427e3d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMost business never see these technologies directly, but their advancement is what drives the capabilities of AI applications. It is one level up the stack that business value begins to be created.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-787e880 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"787e880\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong><u>Capability Components<\/u><\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9fd5463 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9fd5463\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhile algorithms and hardware are important, what makes applications useful is their ability to mimic human intelligence. Things like machine vision, language analysis, document summarization and process automation are the basic building blocks of any intelligent system.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3157a9b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3157a9b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOften, these can be accessed for free through open source platforms, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shogun-toolbox.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Shogun<\/a>, or through the cloud computing platforms of the major tech firms. For example, Amazon, Google and IBM all make API\u2019s available to developers. Often these are used as a loss leaders for their cloud platforms, so are free to anybody who wants to use them.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-466981d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"466981d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWorking with these capabilities directly takes significant expertise. However, even amateurs with little or no technical skills can access them through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltonto.com\/2018\/the-future-of-software-is-no-code\/\" rel=\"noopener\">no-code platforms<\/a>. So a marketing manager who wants to build a simple chatbot can access API\u2019s for natural language processing and text-to-speech capability without writing a single line of code.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8f4659f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8f4659f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhere business value really begins to be created is when these capabilities are bundled into solutions and then trained on data for a particular task. Increasingly, for tasks that are fairly common, there are pre-trained models that can plug into existing systems, with relatively little need for expensive integration.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d2061e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d2061e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing with our clients is that there a lot of well defined problems where there is no need to reinvent the wheel,\u201d Schatsky of Deloitte told me. \u201cSo pre-trained models can be enormously helpful in automating basic processes. That frees up resources that can be focused on more specialized systems and can help create a true competitive advantage.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18b2b35 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"18b2b35\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h3><strong><u>Creating Business Solutions<\/u><\/strong><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f0e005a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f0e005a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s most important for business leaders to know is that AI is no longer some kind of \u201cgee whiz\u201d technology, but increasingly key to competing effectively in today\u2019s marketplace. As the technology continues to evolve from complex integrated systems to a modular ecosystem, even small and medium enterprises will find that they need to adopt these capabilities or fall behind.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43fd581 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"43fd581\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat most business leaders aren\u2019t always aware of, but are quickly waking up to, is that there are an untold number of industry and process specific AI applications that can accelerate their business,\u201d Sutton says. He points to firms like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/primer.ai\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Primer.ai<\/a>, which summarizes massive data sets into analyst reports for financial companies and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.daisyintelligence.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Daisy Intelligence<\/a>, which optimizes supply chains for retail companies, as just two examples.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95b131c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"95b131c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cAt\u00a0Agorai, we\u2019re focused on helping to connect those businesses to the companies offering solutions that can help them,\u201d he told me. \u201cWhat I tell business leaders is that AI is useful for tasks you understand well enough that you could do\u00a0them if you had enough people and enough time, but not so useful if you\u00a0couldn\u2019t do it with more people and more time. It\u2019s a force multiplier, not a magic box.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-98b9589 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"98b9589\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nSchatsky\u00a0of Deloitte sees many of the same trends. \u201cThere is a relentless pace of progress, the tools are getting better, the models are getting better and the systems are getting better and we\u2019re seeing companies achieve real results.
