AI is often related to technology, but the reality can be deeper than this.<\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Since our appearance in the world, we have always made\u00a0tools\u00a0<\/strong>in order to simplify our life and get value from our intelligence and capabilities. We have discovered fire, then invented ways and tools to control it. We have invented the wheel and, through the centuries, we have reached the computer and Internet inventions. These are all tools made to create a better life.<\/p>\n

Now are facing this new character in the stage of evolution, that is\u00a0Artificial Intelligence<\/strong>. Where do we have to put this card in the puzzle of human history?<\/p>\n\n<\/section>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Is AI a tool?<\/h1><\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Many can say that yes, AI is a theoretical tool made much more real by those nerds at Google, but the reality is the opposite: Artificial Intelligence\u00a0is not a tool<\/strong>\u00a0at all. It\u2019s more like a\u00a0synthetic partner<\/strong>\u00a0in our lives. It\u2019s something able to use\u00a0cognitive capabilities<\/strong>\u00a0in order to perform certain tasks faster than we can. So it\u2019s not a tool; it\u2019s an artificial\u00a0extension<\/strong>\u00a0of our\u00a0brain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Basically, we have already\u00a0surrogated\u00a0<\/strong>part of our intelligence to the machine. Let\u2019s think about\u00a0memory<\/strong>. Every one of us has the need to keep many things in mind and our modern world gives us\u00a0plenty of signals\u00a0<\/strong>to memorize. How many of you use an app to keep track of events, tasks or notes? That\u2019s the point. We are\u00a0bypassing<\/strong>\u00a0a feature of our brain (memory) and delegate a machine to help us.<\/p>\n

Actually, note keeping is not strongly connected to AI (yet), but the example is clear: the further we dive in the future, the higher the need to be\u00a0machine-dependent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So why isn\u2019t AI a tool? Because it\u00a0learns<\/strong>. Tools are made to do a specific set of\u00a0limited<\/strong>\u00a0operations. AI is made to\u00a0take decisions<\/strong>\u00a0according to some data to learn from and this is not an operation, but a real\u00a0way of thinking<\/strong>. Therefore, AI can\u2019t be considered a real tool, because it evolves as long as time passes and learns\u00a0continuously<\/strong>\u00a0how to work better. No tool in human history has ever been able to do this. Even Turing machine or finite-state machines aren\u2019t this advanced in cognitive capabilities. In this way, AI can\u2019t be considered a tool.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A cultural revolution<\/h1><\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

So I can safely say that we are living in a\u00a0new industrial revolution<\/strong>\u00a0in which humans start to build machines that not only work for them, but that\u00a0think<\/strong>\u00a0for them. We are reaching very valuable results in\u00a0image recognition<\/strong>, for example, and it\u2019s only the starting point. There are\u00a0health<\/strong>applications of machine learning that can improve life quality, for example. That\u2019s why AI is not a technological\u00a0revolution<\/strong>, but a\u00a0cultural\u00a0<\/strong>one. We must face the fact that mankind and the machines will become more and more\u00a0melted<\/strong>\u00a0together and that this doesn\u2019t have anything to do with technology.<\/p>\n

What is going to happen in the near future is the birth of a\u00a0different way<\/strong>\u00a0of thinking and that\u2019s a very huge\u00a0boost<\/strong>\u00a0for progress and creativity. In fact, if a robot can think about something instead of us, we have\u00a0more time<\/strong>\u00a0to think about other\u00a0more important<\/strong>\u00a0things like art, science, culture, and society.<\/p>\n

Think about that guy in the police districts that many years ago had to check\u00a0fingerprints<\/strong>\u00a0manually one by one during an investigation. His job can now be done by artificial intelligence in\u00a0minutes<\/strong>. So, has this guy lost his job? No, he has\u00a0gained time<\/strong>\u00a0for other things to think about. That\u2019s the great,\u00a0cultural revolution\u00a0<\/strong>of AI that is going to happen. We\u2019ll be more and\u00a0more free<\/strong>\u00a0from less important things, so we\u2019ll be able to focus on the really important stuff. And, again, it has nothing to do with technology.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Where is AI taking us?<\/h1><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The more we are free from activities, the higher the\u00a0speed<\/strong>\u00a0at which artificial intelligence can improve because we have much more time to study it. It\u2019s an\u00a0exponential growth<\/strong>\u00a0of knowledge and progress and, once started, it will not stop easily. Simplifying, AI can be a boost in\u00a0human progress<\/strong>\u00a0because will give us more time to think. No need to remember the\u00a0grocery list<\/strong>; an AI will predict what we\u2019ll need to eat instead of us. No need to remember to take\u00a0medicines<\/strong>; an AI will forecast our symptoms or lead us to a lifestyle that will\u00a0prevent diseases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So what we\u2019ll do in the\u00a0spare time<\/strong>\u00a0AI will give us? Maybe we are at the brink of an era in which humans will be able to\u00a0unleash<\/strong>\u00a0their complete\u00a0potential<\/strong>\u00a0and we\u2019ll finally start to take care of our planet\u2019s\u00a0health<\/strong>\u00a0(if it won\u2019t be too late) and, more important, take care of\u00a0ourselves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Maybe I\u2019m too drastic but I think that AI, with its role of boosting human capabilities, can actually be the key for salvation from\u00a0self-extinction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
