By the end of this year, there will be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/471264\/iot-number-of-connected-devices-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/471264\/iot-number-of-connected-devices-worldwide\/\">26 billion devices<\/a>\u00a0connected by the IoT. But that\u2019s not the half of it. The IoT is still expanding exponentially. By 2025, that number will nearly triple to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/471264\/iot-number-of-connected-devices-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/471264\/iot-number-of-connected-devices-worldwide\/\">more than 75 billion<\/a>. How will we manage and maintain the networks, data, clouds and connections that govern and transmit this data? An IoT skills gap may be standing in our way.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95ed7ee elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"95ed7ee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIndeed, it turns out, that\u2019s a pretty significant question. A recent survey showed that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmarsat.com\/news\/global-skills-shortage-putting-iot-development-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.inmarsat.com\/news\/global-skills-shortage-putting-iot-development-risk\/\">76%<\/a>\u00a0of respondents felt like they needed more higher level IoT specialists and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmarsat.com\/news\/global-skills-shortage-putting-iot-development-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.inmarsat.com\/news\/global-skills-shortage-putting-iot-development-risk\/\">80%<\/a>\u00a0felt like they didn\u2019t have the skills needed to keep their IoT working as it is. Another report showed that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cmocouncil.org\/thought-leadership\/reports\/323\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/cmocouncil.org\/thought-leadership\/reports\/323\/download\">1\/3 of respondents<\/a>\u00a0felt there was a major skills gap in IoT readiness. The question remains: if we\u2019re already struggling in 2019, how will we possibly manage in 2025? And what can we do within the next five years to prepare for that change?\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ab17be elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9ab17be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nIf your company is not yet feeling the pain of the IoT skills gap, take heart: you soon will. The following are some tips for lessening the damage to your business.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67845cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"67845cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2><strong>Upskilling and\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Retraining<\/strong><\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e4fd2a3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e4fd2a3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe easiest way to deal with the IoT skills gap in your workforce is upskilling and retraining programs. In fact, I believe we need to start looking at employee\u00a0training and upskilling\u00a0as a standard part of the IT budget. There is truly no way that we will be able to maintain a solid pipeline of employees knowledgeable about the IoT without starting with\u00a0training our current employees\u00a0to do the work. This goes not just for the IoT, but AI in general. Grab your best and brightest. Grab your eh-they\u2019re-OK-too. And start arming them with the knowledge to understand not just the technology but the big picture behind it. The more people knowledgeable about the IoT and your company\u2019s plans for it, the more powerful your IoT will be.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f1a42a9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f1a42a9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2 aria-hidden=\"true\"><strong>Revisit Your Recruitment Plan<\/strong><\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-78c366e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"78c366e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhen was the last time you freshened up your recruitment plan? Take a look at the types of people you are hiring. Are they the kind of people who get the big picture? Are they the kind of people who can see the value hiding in data segments? Who understand the why behind the how? Tomorrow\u2019s technology will always be different from today\u2019s. You need to recruit employees who have the soft skills to\u00a0shine in both environments\u2014today and tomorrow\u2014with the help of upskilling. If you can\u2019t imagine them doing more than churning your current algorithms, give them a hard pass.   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3fba356 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3fba356\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s more than just hiring for the hard skills like the knowledge of IoT. You need to find people who are willing to learn, grow and change with the changes that come with new technologies.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b08f8d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2b08f8d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2><strong>Incentivize<\/strong><\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-edba24e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"edba24e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSo you\u2019ve started working with your current employees and have changed up your recruitment plan, but still no luck in closing that IoT skills gap. So ask yourself: Are you a company that a highly-sought professional would want to work for? If not, why? Is it budget? Culture? In the legacy era, companies didn\u2019t really have to work too hard at recruiting top talent. There were always people willing to do the job, especially if they paid competitively. But in digital transformation, the demand is always for more. Just as customers want things bigger, faster and better, employees also want more from their employers. What\u2019s your vision? How do you involve your employees in it? How do you reward them for hard work? How do you make their lives easier, in terms of managing time with family and time at work? You may need to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/futurumresearch.com\/extreme-recruiting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/futurumresearch.com\/extreme-recruiting\/\">make some adjustments<\/a>\u00a0to become a company that IoT experts want to invest in themselves.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5420f1b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5420f1b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><h2><strong>Keep Growing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74f03ef elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74f03ef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThis isn\u2019t a one-time deal. Demand for IoT jobs rose from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.information-age.com\/cyber-security-and-iot-123481940\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.information-age.com\/cyber-security-and-iot-123481940\/\">3,338 in Q4 2018<\/a>\u00a0to 4,968 in Q1 2019. It won\u2019t stop anytime soon. Don\u2019t become complacent by finding one or two strong candidates and calling it a day. No one is \u201csafe\u201d in digital transformation. The golden IoT expert you find this afternoon may be poached quickly by another firm tomorrow morning. But even with a shortage of employees specifically trained to manage the IoT, your company does have the power to stay on track by focusing on upskilling, recruiting, incentivizing and intelligently growing your pipeline of talent.
