The pandemic is having a significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/future-of-work\/how-will-the-pandemic-impact-the-future-of-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">impact <\/a>on how we collaborate, where we work and the employer-employee relationship with respect to remote job performance. How has work changed during the global pandemic, and what will it look like in the future?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b720473 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b720473\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Until recently, it\u2019s been assumed that physical workspaces promoted employee productivity and collaboration. That notion is being tested, but it\u2019s no longer true. With the world\u2019s largest working-from-home (WFH) experiment underway, we\u2019re already seeing how remote team structures are being challenged and forcing companies to become more agile. Moreover, productivity data on remote teams might have exceeded expectations altogether. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/reimagining-the-office-and-work-life-after-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">McKinsey<\/a>, 80% of people enjoy WFH. In addition, 41% feel more productive than before, and 28% are as productive.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e2d50ef elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e2d50ef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A major factor is the way employees manage their time. WFH saves immense time across various activities both small and large, including getting dressed, eating lunch, engaging in watercooler talk, having last-minute meetings and, one of the most notable, commuting. It&#8217;s estimated that the average <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/content\/dam\/Census\/library\/visualizations\/interactive\/travel-time.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one-way commuter<\/a> time is 26.1 minutes \u2014 that\u2019s roughly five hours a week. And if you live in a large metropolis, that nearly doubles! Eliminating the daily commute in the U.S. has saved more than <a href=\"http:\/\/nebula.wsimg.com\/0ead8fc97fa99857dd54b4d32ea69135?AccessKeyId=F63D6A5D5C5C83FB76EC&amp;amp;disposition=0&amp;amp;alloworigin=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">89 million hours each week<\/a>, which is equivalent to 44.5 million full workdays since the start of the pandemic.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0688c99 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0688c99\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/njbia.org\/increase-in-remote-work-saves-americans-90b-in-commuting-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Upwork<\/a> reported the decrease in daily commutes since the pandemic has saved $90 billion. Individuals who commute by car have saved more than $2,000 since mid-March.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-61401f7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"61401f7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These small time savings add up, and reducing wasteful time is empowering employees to focus more on valuable work and organize their time differently. This is cost-effective for employers, too. The remote working model can help companies move faster, allocate resources more effectively, and leverage collaboration tools and other technologies more efficiently to keep everyone on track in their digital workspaces. This can have negative implications on employees, though. The lines of home and work life have become blurred. Some WFH employees may find the days seem longer \u2014 and they\u2019re not wrong.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0027187 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0027187\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3654470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">A recent study from the National Bureau of Economic Research<\/a> analyzed emails and meetings from 3.1 million people across 16 global cities. It reported that the duration of the average workday increased by 8.2%, or 48.5 minutes, with an increase in emails. However, employees may not have worked continuously throughout this period and may have created more flexible schedules to account for daily interruptions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a79c0a4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a79c0a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Companies will need to keep an eye on how these numbers change and find a way to keep employees motivated. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/faculty\/Publication%20Files\/20-138_ec6ff0f0-7947-4607-9d54-c5c53044fb95.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Harvard Business School<\/a>found that at least 16% of American employees will remain remote after Covid-19. They will likely have a combination of owned office space for in-person collaboration or major team-building events, but with more dispersed workers, on-demand and flexible coworking spaces will be a cost-effective option.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-752e8a8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"752e8a8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We\u2019re already seeing this transition as major tech companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/21\/technology\/facebook-remote-work-coronavirus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Facebook are enabling<\/a> their employees to work from home and paying salaries that fit local living costs. For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/john-rampton\/different-motivations-for-different-generations-of-workers-boomers-gen-x-millennials-gen-z.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">baby boomers<\/a>, money was a major benefit. We&#8217;re in the inception of a technological revolution, rife with AI and automation that will cause job obsolescence.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7f090a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7f090a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>McKinsey discovered that 50% of global job activities\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/digital-disruption\/harnessing-automation-for-a-future-that-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">could theoretically be automated<\/a>; that could mean\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/future-of-work\/jobs-lost-jobs-gained-what-the-future-of-work-will-mean-for-jobs-skills-and-wages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">400-800 million<\/a>\u00a0people could be displaced globally due to automation by 2030. Now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.delltechnologies.com\/en-us\/press\/realizing-2030-dell-technologies-research-explores-the-next-era-of-human-machine-partnerships.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">85% of the jobs<\/a>that will be available in 2030 haven\u2019t been invented yet. Those entering the workforce will have a higher probability of an irrelevant skill set tomorrow.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5c8261d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5c8261d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As organizations look at cost-saving measures or get more comfortable with remote workers, the onus will be put on the employee to evolve with their position; if they don\u2019t, there is a real chance they could become obsolete. The competition for employment will be fiercer with a remote workforce.
