The concept of safeguarding our incomes against automation\u2019s insatiable appetite for our jobs, for example, has even become a centerpiece of our political discourse.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c165da elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4c165da\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When people think about automation today, they don\u2019t think of technology that empowers or augments, but rather, technology that <em>displaces<\/em> \u2014 and exacerbates issues of inequality and economic opportunity in the process.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4e2633c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4e2633c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There\u2019s little doubt that inequality of economic opportunity in the labor force will remain a key problem for society to solve in the years ahead. But the extent to which automation is sure to eliminate all of our jobs and throw the economy into disarray is overstated. As Google\u2019s chief economist, Hal Varian, said during a forum on the future of work, sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsb.stanford.edu\/insights\/misplaced-fear-job-stealing-robots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence<\/a>, \u201cMost jobs are more complex than people realize. Automation doesn\u2019t generally eliminate jobs. Automation generally eliminates dull, tedious, and repetitive tasks. If you remove all the tasks, you remove the job. But that\u2019s rare.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6d44596 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6d44596\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-530accc\" data-id=\"530accc\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5865157 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5865157\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In other words, automation, though likely to eliminate jobs that consist solely of menial tasks, is perhaps more properly seen as a means of augmenting the modern worker, rather than replacing them. Employed correctly, it has the potential to benefit society. As analysts at McKinsey and Company wrote in a May, 2019 report titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/future-of-work\/tech-for-good-using-technology-to-smooth-disruption-and-improve-well-being\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Tech for Good<\/em><\/a>, \u201cThe development and adoption of advanced technologies including smart automation and artificial intelligence has the potential not only to raise productivity and GDP growth but also to improve well-being more broadly, including through healthier life and longevity and more leisure.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-699c21b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"699c21b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Now, that may sound a little rosey, but it\u2019s true that the choice of how we use automation \u2014 whether we use it for good, and to create a better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experfy.com\/blog\/futureofwork\/the-meaning-of-work-must-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">future of work<\/a>\u00a0for all of us, or purely for profit, and the benefit of a select few \u2014 remains ours. It\u2019s also true that automation, far from consecrating our doom, provides us an opportunity. It provides us better opportunities to put people first and to improve life. Automation is a means of augmentation, as well as of liberation. If we use automation correctly, it can make us more powerful, and free us up to spend more time focusing on high-value work \u2014 as it once did for farmers by way of the ox, and NASA scientists via the computer. This would empower us not only to produce more value for the companies we run, but to begin to design a future that\u2019s more enjoyable across the board.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4537337 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4537337\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>None of this will happen on its own, however. Business leaders and those charged with implementing automation technology in all its varied forms today have to take seriously the task of using this technology the right way to create positive change \u2014 rather than simply to increase short-term profits.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5acc406 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5acc406\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In my work helping some of the world\u2019s largest enterprises utilize automation software strategically, I\u2019ve identified several strategies for using automation technology to that end.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-919ea31 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"919ea31\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-eb8bc59\" data-id=\"eb8bc59\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b1bc82 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7b1bc82\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Here are a few that serve as a great way to start.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-18a67e9 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"18a67e9\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-19cbe7f\" data-id=\"19cbe7f\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cb40544 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cb40544\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Think people-first.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a7300ab elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a7300ab\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-771150e\" data-id=\"771150e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f02a462 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f02a462\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For years now business leaders have been neglecting the relevance of people as an asset in increasing efficiency and sales velocity. Instead, we seek to increase efficiency and sales velocity by replacing people with automation technology.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a3d1cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9a3d1cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This is foolish. Automation solutions that seek to either replace people entirely or offload repetitive tasks often make the processes they\u2019re supposed to optimize more rigid. Partly as a result, our employees spend more time compensating for the limitations of our technology solutions than they do benefiting from their functionality. And because our preferred means of problem-solving remains outsourcing problems to enterprise automation apps, the number of those apps we use continues to grow. This means the number of apps we force ourselves to adapt to and change-manage (with only marginal improvement) also continues to grow. The result is a self-reinforcing cycle that hurts both our businesses and the people who power them. It further locks us into a culture and procedural standard that mandates inefficiency, along with overworked, disenchanted employees filling technology gaps.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-05055da elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"05055da\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ee53043\" data-id=\"ee53043\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7beca36 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7beca36\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The truth is, to use new automation technology to create a more holistically efficient operational infrastructure, committing to thinking \u201cpeople-first\u201d is a necessary first step and a helpful governing principle. Before augmenting a process or system with automation, we should ask ourselves, \u201cHow will the infusion of this technology into our infrastructure save employees time and allow them to focus most purposefully on the things they\u2019re best at?\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-783866d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"783866d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Determine what solution to use in accordance with your answer. Then, think strategically about how to use that solution to this end of augmenting and optimizing employees \u2014 rather than replacing them.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-da4d4ed elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"da4d4ed\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-618e796\" data-id=\"618e796\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ddb9ee elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2ddb9ee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Design processes that use automation, but keep humans-in-the-loop.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4ee1a73 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4ee1a73\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-656d47c\" data-id=\"656d47c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-12a84a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"12a84a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One of the chief misconceptions business leaders possess about improving their operational infrastructure is that automation is a silver bullet. While automation <em>is<\/em> a crucial tool in improving and streamlining your internal processes, automation cannot on its own solve the business process challenges of rigidity and inefficiency from which many companies suffer.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bf39ce2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bf39ce2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Automation only makes peoples\u2019 lives easier if it\u2019s strategically applied \u2014 if it helps people more easily do their work. Automation hastily applied, or applied in the manner most companies apply it today, often does the opposite: if it doesn\u2019t outright replace people (which is what happens when companies try and automate certain processes entirely), it doesn\u2019t meaningfully lessen employees\u2019 workload or make processes more efficient.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d2dc9db elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d2dc9db\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Why? For one thing, most enterprise automation technology really isn\u2019t designed for that, so much as it\u2019s designed to automate specific, one-to-one tasks. (Transferring data from one platform to another; extracting data from forms; generating a non-actionable email, etc.) And automated workflows that run independently of people become \u201cblack boxes\u201d that people lose oversight of. This makes it much harder to change or adapt if needed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-efc93bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"efc93bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>But more importantly, most key processes <em> shouldn\u2019t <\/em>be automated end-to-end.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da86ec9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"da86ec9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The processes your IT team creates are very likely multifaceted and complex. To run correctly \u2014 such that they create value of the sort we\u2019ve been discussing \u2014 they require something automation technology can\u2019t provide: nuance. A smarter use of automation to improve process design is to use it not as an end itself, but as a means of augmenting employees\u2019 ability to do their job effectively.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-316fec6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"316fec6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>That means keeping a human-in-the-loop.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5acb289 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5acb289\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>You can think of a \u201chuman-in-the-loop\u201d as a kind of traffic cop, or, better yet, someone who can actually practically be that director of the orchestra mentioned in the introduction.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-28ffdf6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"28ffdf6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Automation-augmented processes that run under the oversight of a human-in-the-loop prove more efficient, but also more flexible and adaptive. A human-in-the-loop can mitigate edge cases and make crucial judgment calls when needed \u2014 something no automation tool would ever reliably be able to do.
