class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThis is my response to a fellow data scientist\u2019s use of the words\u00a0<em>artificial intelligence<\/em>\u00a0during a mid-week phone call about how we might grow our business.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-778cb36 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" cognizant that snarky interruptions aren\u2019t an effective teaching tool, I take a deep breath and explain: \u201cLet\u2019s say\u00a0<em>machine learning<\/em>\u00a0because it more accurately describes the process of<strong>\u00a0teaching mathematical models\u00a0<\/strong>to generate insights by providing them\u00a0<strong>with training examples.<\/strong>\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9e5d76c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9e5d76c\" I\u2019ve increasingly found that the phrase\u00a0<em>artificial intelligence<\/em>\u00a0sparkles with false promise:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n<li>The term misleads decision-makers into investing in advanced analytics before their organization has reached\u00a0<strong>sufficient data maturity<\/strong>. Learning, problem solving, applying common sense, operating under conditions of ambiguity \u2014 taken together, these traits form the basis for\u00a0<em>general intelligence,<\/em>\u00a0the long-standing goal of artificial intelligence.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2dfedc0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2dfedc0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSince inception, AI research has experienced boom and bust cycles, fueled by an abundance of optimism followed by a collapse of funding. These setbacks have been so dramatic and so endemic to the field that they received their own neologism:\u00a0<em>AI winter.<\/em>\u00a0The two most dramatic winters occurred in the mid-to-late \u201970s and the mid-80s to mid-90s. Failure to appropriately manage hype is the commonly cited cause of this unfortunate antipattern.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-21233fb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"21233fb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn the words of the chief data scientist of the Strategic Artificial Intelligence Lab,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theartistsofdatascience.fireside.fm\/t-scott-clendaniel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">T. Scott Clendaniel<\/a>:\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-03717f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"03717f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cI\u2019m really concerned that we\u2019re going to enter a third AI winter \u2026 because I think the field has been so overhyped that there\u2019s no way it can possibly live up to expectations.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-db80188 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"db80188\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLately, the machine learning community has been fielding a lot of journalistic inquiries about AI. In May 2020,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/blog\/openai-api\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">OpenAI released their GPT-3 model<\/a>\u00a0for natural language processing. The cost to initially train the model was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lambdalabs.com\/blog\/demystifying-gpt-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$4.6 million, requiring 355 GPU years of computational power<\/a>. As of now, OpenAI has released the model through a controlled API access point rather than making the code freely available to researchers.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c49a09 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7c49a09\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSetting aside concerns of impracticality and inaccessibility for a moment \u2014 GPT-3 has produced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2020\/07\/20\/1005454\/openai-machine-learning-language-generator-gpt-3-nlp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some impressive feats<\/a>. And yet, importantly, this overhyped development does not move us closer to artificial intelligence.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d4ce4d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d4ce4d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIf advancing research into AGI is analogous to sending a spacecraft to explore Mars, then the development of GPT-3 is more or less analogous to investing $4.6 million into a rocket that creates a beautiful fire cloud of exhaust without ever leaving the launchpad.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-bb03d52 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"bb03d52\" data-element_type=\"section\" techniques.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-98a0406 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"98a0406\" data-element_type=\"section\"
